Bucks beat Rockets 117-111 in Westbrook's Houston debut
October 24, 2019

HOUSTON (AP) When Giannis Antetokounmpo fouled out with more than five minutes left after putting up a triple-double against the Houston Rockets, the rest of the Milwaukee Bucks didn't panic.

''These guys in this locker room, we're fighters, we're competitors,'' Wesley Matthews said. ''If Giannis fouls out we can't just come into the locker room.''

Antetokounmpo scored 30 points and his supporting cast held on to lead the Bucks to a 117-111 victory over the Rockets on Thursday night in a star-studded opener featuring the last three MVPs.

Antetokounmpo, the MVP last season, also had 13 rebounds and 11 assists. While certainly upset after fouling out, he was impressed with the way his team responded.

''They did an amazing job,'' he said. ''Moving the ball, knocking down shots.''

Brook Lopez made two free throws with about a minute left before a layup by Russell Westbrook. But Lopez made a fadeaway shot to leave Milwaukee up 115-109 with 39 seconds remaining. James Harden added a pair of free throws before Ersan Ilyasova made a jump shot with about 15 seconds to go that sent many fans heading to the exits.

Some had wondered what would happen with the pairing of the two ball-dominant guards in Harden and Westbrook after the 2017 MVP was traded from Oklahoma City for Chris Paul this summer. In their first game together with the Rockets both filled up the stat sheet, but they were unable to come away with a win after leading for much of the game.

Westbrook had 24 points, 16 rebounds and seven assists.

Harden, the 2018 MVP, added 19 points, 14 assists and seven rebounds. He was 2 of 13 from the field, 1 of 8 on 3s and made 14 free throws without a miss.

''They're going to be fine,'' coach Mike D'Antoni said. ''It's sad to say, but we're not going to win 82 games this year. Now we've got a chance to win 81.''

The Bucks led by six when Antetokounmpo fouled out. He walked to coach Mike Budenholzer and implored him to challenge the call, but he'd already used his one challenge per game that coaches get this season and couldn't do anything to help his superstar.

Harden echoed his D'Antoni's sentiment and raved about Westbrook.

''Everybody saw it tonight,'' Harden said. ''He's a different type of breed on that court. But it's Game 1, we're not going to get too down, and even if we won, we're not going to get too excited.''

Houston scored the next five points, with the last four from Westbrook to cut the lead to 101-100. But Khris Middleton hit a 3-pointer with 3 1/2 minutes left to stretch Milwaukee's lead.

The Bucks were up by six with about two minutes left before P.J. Tucker knocked a 3 from the corner. But Matthews added a 3-pointer for Milwaukee seconds after that to push the lead to 111-105.

Milwaukee opened the fourth quarter with a 13-3 run to make it 91-90 and take its first lead of the night. Antetokounmpo led the way in stretch, scoring eight points. The Rockets missed several shots and had a turnover before they finally got back on track.

There were about eight minutes left when Harden found Westbrook connected on two straight plays. On the first one Harden dished to Westbrook and he was fouled on a layup to get a 3-point play. The next time down the court Harden sent a bounce pass to Westbrook in the lane and he finished with a two-handed dunk that put Houston up 95-91 and brought a huge ovation from the crowd.

But the Bucks made the next 10 points, led by five from Brook Lopez, who capped the run with a 3-pointer to make it 101-95 with about 5 1/2 minutes left.

TIP-INS

Bucks: Lopez had 14 points and four rebounds. ... Ilyasova had13 points and 11 rebounds off the bench. ... Milwaukee made 16 of 46 3-pointers.

Rockets: Tucker had 17 points and made five 3-pointers. ... Houston also made 16 3-pointers. ... Clint Capela had 13 points and 12 rebounds.

NBA/CHINA RELATIONSHIP

A group of 30 fans held signs and wore shirts in support of anti-government protesters in Hong Kong at the game.

Houston general manager Daryl Morey angered China with a since-deleted tweet in support of the protesters earlier this month.

Wednesday's opening-night games were not televised in China in the wake of Morey's tweet that caused tension between the NBA and Chinese officials.

One man held a sign the read: ''Thank you Morey,'' with a red heart after Morey's name. Another sign read: ''No censorship in America'' and a third declared: ''Freedom is not FREE.'' Another man held a sign that said: ''Fight for freedom, stand with Hong Kong,'' which are the exact words included in Morey's tweet.

Trae Young has 38 points, Hawks beat Pistons 117-110
October 24, 2019

DETROIT (AP) Trae Young feels like a veteran as he enters his second NBA season.

That'sbad news for the rest of the league.

Young had 38 points and nine assists and the Atlanta Hawks opened the season with a 117-100 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Thursday night.

''I'm a lot more comfortable than I was at this point last year,'' Young said. ''Obviously, I'm not a rookie anymore and I felt great out there tonight. Once I hit a couple shots, I knew it was rolling.''

If anyone at Little Caesars Arena doubted how good Young was feeling, he made it clear midway through the second quarter, hitting a 3-pointer from the edge of the Pistons logo at half court.

''I knew it was deep, but I didn't realize I was on the logo until someone told me at halftime,'' he said. ''Ever since high school, I've known when I was in range and let it go.''

John Collins added 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Jabari Parker had 18 points.

Vince Carter checked in for Atlanta with 6:52 left in the first quarter, becoming the first player to see action in 22 NBA seasons.

''Vince stabilizes this team,'' Hawks coach Lloyd Pierce said. ''Our starting lineup has about half as many years as he does, and we've got a bunch of guys who weren't even born when he started. He didn't have a basket tonight, but the boxscore can't show you everything he did to help us win.''

Derrick Rose led Detroit with 27 points, and Andre Drummond had 21 points and 12 rebounds.

Drummond had 32 points and 23 rebounds in Detroit's season-opening victory on Wednesday in Indiana, but the Hawks scored 60 points in the paint.

''I thought we came out tonight with a laissez-faire attitude defensively, and they took the game to us,'' Pistons coach Dwane Casey said. ''We had a good game last night, but that didn't mean a hill of beans tonight.''

Drummond, who played 78 minutes in just over 24 hours, didn't think that was the problem.

''I really didn't have time to ease myself into the game, but this was just a tough night for us overall,'' he said. ''We're NBA players. There's no excuse for the way we started the game.''

Young's four-point play with 3:43 left in the first half gave him 26 points - the highest-scoring half of his career - and put the Hawks up 58-51.

Rose, though, scored 15 points in the half and Langston Galloway's late 3-pointer gave Detroit a 63-60 halftime lead.

The teams stayed close for most of the quarter, but back-to-back dunks by Parker - one over Thon Maker - put Atlanta up 88-79. Parker added two free throws, giving him 18 points, and the Hawks took a 91-81 lead into the break.

De'Andre Hunter's 3-pointer extended Atlanta's lead to 97-83 with 8:47 to play. Detroit scored the next four points before the game was delayed for several minutes because of the clock failure.

The Pistons narrowed the lead to 98-92, but a pair of Rose turnovers helped the Hawks scored the next seven points and take a 13-point lead with 4:47 to play.

Detroit got the margin to single digits, but Young's three-point play with 1:33 wrapped it up.

TIP INS

HAWKS: Carter has played 62 games against Detroit, second only to the 64 he has played against the Boston Celtics. Only 11 players have faced the Pistons more often since the NBA-ABA merger, led by Robert Parish with 90.

PISTONS: PF Blake Griffin (hamstring/knee) is expected to miss three more games before being evaluated for a possible return.

OLD-SCHOOL BASKETBALL

The teams played without game and shot clocks for three minutes in the fourth period. The time remaining was announced at each stoppage in play and the shot clock was announced at 10 seconds and counted down from five. The clocks returned to the scoreboard for the final six minutes, but the boards above the baskets remained blank.

''That was disappointing - I don't know what happened - but it disrupts the flow of the game when you are looking around to see the clock,'' Casey said.

INJURY UPDATE

Reggie Jackson left early in the third quarter due to back tightness. Casey said he will be examined on Friday to see if he can face the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday.

Now with Clippers, Kawhi Leonard spoils Warriors fun again
October 24, 2019

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Kawhi Leonard sure knows how to spoil Golden State's fun.

Leonard did it again in the Warriors' first game at Chase Center just like in their farewell at Oracle Arena four months ago, scoring 21 points in three quarters to lead the Los Angeles Clippers to a 141-122 victory Thursday on opening night at Golden State's snazzy new arena.

Reigning NBA Finals MVP Leonard shot 9 for 17 and also dished out nine assists in his second game with L.A. after leading the Toronto Raptors to their first title last season in a six-game finals against the Warriors.

''I thought he started doing it in the second round last year,'' Clippers coach Doc Rivers said. ''In the first round he was just dominating and then I thought as each round went on he started playmaking more and more, but what he's doing now is on another level.''

Stephen Curry scored 23 points but committed eight turnovers and D'Angelo Russell added 20 points in his Golden State debut, but the Warriors got beat up the way they used to do it against the entire NBA - even giving up a 46-point third quarter.

What a dud for the Dubs as they formally opened new Chase Center in San Francisco after 47 years at Oracle Arena in Oakland.

Patrick Patterson scored 20 points and Ivica Zubac had 16 points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots for Los Angeles.

In a rematch of the hard-fought first-round playoff series last season won by the Warriors in six games on their way to a fifth straight finals, the Clippers jumped to a 14-0 lead making 5 of their first 6 shots. Golden State started 0 for 6 and missed four 3s. Russell's jumper at 8:23 gave Golden State its first points and he scored the Warriors' initial seven before Curry hit a 3 at 6:42.

The Warriors got a scare when they briefly lost Draymond Green at the 9:03 mark of the opening quarter after he appeared to injure his right elbow on a screen. Green returned to the court at the start of the second and wound up with 11 points.

Curry, who at 31 is the oldest Warriors player, was 2 of 11 on 3s as new-look Golden State went 15 for 42 from deep. Kevin Durant is long gone and so are several other key veterans part of the recent Warriors championship runs.

Golden State coach Steve Kerr is embracing the move and new arena - he's still figuring his way around the building - but noted ''I'll miss everything about Oracle. It's a great place to play.''

Some fans left after the third quarter with the home team trailing 111-87.

There will be plenty more lumps along the way for this young group, with Kerr noting, ''This is not a one off.''

''This is more the reality of the NBA. The last five years we've been living in a world that isn't supposed to exist,'' Kerr said.

Leonard and Patrick Beverley were booed during pregame introductions for the Clippers, who beat the Lakers 112-102 in their opener Tuesday with Leonard scoring 30 points on 10-for-19 shooting.

TIP-INS

Clippers: Los Angeles shot 56.8% in the first half (21 of 37), making 6 of 11 3s. ... The Clippers were outrebounded 23-20 in the first half and 42-39 overall. ... G Rodney McGruder missed his second straight game with a high right ankle sprain. ... The Clippers scored 58 points in the paint.

Warriors: Golden State called a late timeout when it had none remaining, resulting in a technical foul. ... Kevon Looney started at center for the Warriors after working back from a strained right hamstring then dealt with right hamstring tightness in the second half and didn't return as a precautionary move. The hope had been he would play about 20 minutes with four stretches of five minutes or so, Kerr said. ... Kerr challenged a foul call on Looney late in the first half and the call was upheld. ... The Warriors had won the last three at home against the Clippers.

NICE TOUCHES

Newly enshrined Hall of Famer Al Attles, who will be 83 next month, took part in a ceremonial tipoff just before the ball actually went up. Attles joined the organization in 1960 and played in the Philadelphia Warriors in Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game on March 2, 1962.

Injured Splash Brother Klay Thompson, who could miss the entire season recovering from surgery for a torn ACL in his left knee, spoke to the fans at midcourt before the game. He also shared a hug and a few words with Leonard.

Construction workers who built Chase Center held the flag for the national anthem.

LOCKED OUT

Kerr joked he might need to wear his key card around his neck even on game nights.

''I've been locked out of my office a couple times after games, true story,'' he said. ''... We're slowly but surely figuring those things out.''

QUOTEABLE

Rivers hardly considers Curry past his prime beginning his 11th NBA season.

''I want him to get older. I'm all for the 40 Steph, I can't wait for that one,'' Rivers quipped. ''He'll still be playing because he can shoot. He just won't be as agile I don't think. He's been around a long time. It's amazing when you think about it how quickly it goes.''

UP NEXT

Clippers: At Suns on Saturday having won the last 12 meetings overall and six straight in Phoenix.

Heat rally to beat Bucks 131-126 in OT
October 26, 2019
By The Associated Press

MILWAUKEE (AP) Goran Dragic scored 25 points off the bench, Bam Adebayo added 19 points and the Miami Heat rallied from a 21-point third-quarter deficit to beat Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks in overtime 131-126 on Saturday night.

Antetokounmpo finished with 29 points, 17 rebounds and nine assists, but last season's MVP also had eight turnovers and fouled out with 2:31 to play in overtime. Antetokounmpo also fouled out Thursday night in Houston.

After trailing 74-53 with less than 11:00 to play in the third quarter, the Heat outscored Milwaukee 78-52 the rest of the way, including 49-33 in the fourth quarter and overtime.

With the Heat up 121-119 with 3 seconds to play in regulation, Khris Middleton, who finished with 25 points, shot an air ball and Antetokounmpo tipped it in at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

Adebayo sank four free throws in the extra period and Dragic scored six points in overtime to lift Miami to its second win.

Kendrick Nun scored 18 points before fouling out for the Heat. Miami rookie Tyler Herro, a Milwaukee native, finished with 14.

Heat guard Jimmy Butler missed his second game after he and his girlfriend welcomed a baby on Wednesday.

76ERS 117, PISTONS 111

DETROIT (AP) - Tobias Harris scored 29 points against his former team in Philadelphia's victory over Detroit.

Al Horford added 23 points and Ben Simmons had 13 points and 10 assists to help the 76ers improve to 2-0. Philadelphia had 30 assists to Detroit's 19.

Derrick Rose led Detroit with 31 points in 27 minutes, but the Pistons missed 15 free throws in a game that was close until the closing moments. Andre Drummond had 11 points and 11 rebounds in Detroit's second straight loss.

Both teams were missing marquee big men - Joel Embiid was out with a sprained ankle for the 76ers, while Blake Griffin's season won't start for Detroit until November because of knee and hamstring soreness. Detroit also played without Reggie Jackson because of a back injury.

HAWKS 103, MAGIC 99

ATLANTA (AP) - Trae Young scored 39 points, including Atlanta's last eight, in a win over Orlando.

Young took over the game for Atlanta after Orlando led 96-95. His baseline reverse layup gave the Hawk the lead. Following a tying free throw by Aaron Gordon, Young's layup again gave the lead back to the Hawks.

Jabari Parker and Kevin Huerter each had 10 points for Atlanta.

Evan Fournier paced Orlando with 23 points. D.J. Augustin had 14 and Markelle Fultz finished with 12 points.

CELTICS 118, KNICKS 95

NEW YORK (AP) - Kemba Walker scored a season-high 32 points, snapping out of an early season shooting slump with seven 3-pointers, and Boston kept New York winless.

Jaylen Brown added 19 points for the Celtics, who won their second straight after beating NBA champion Toronto on Friday. Jayson Tatum had 15 points and nine rebounds, and 7-foot-5 rookie Tacko Fall scored four points on a pair of dunks in his NBA debut.

Rookie RJ Barrett scored 26 points for the Knicks, who fell to 0-3 in their home opener. Mitchell Robinson added 17.

CAVALIERS 110, PACERS 99

CLEVELAND (AP) - Tristan Thompson scored 25 points and made his first career 3-pointer, Kevin Love scored 21 and Cleveland played well in a home-opening win, giving first-year coach John Beilein his first NBA victory.

Love added 13 rebounds and nine assists. Thompson also had 13 rebounds, Collin Sexton scored 18 and rookie Darius Garland 12, making a key 3-pointer down the stretch to slow Indiana's comeback.

Malcolm Brogdon scored 30 and had 10 assists to lead the Pacers.

RAPTORS 108, BULLS 84

CHICAGO (AP) - Pascal Siakam scored 19 points, OG Anunoby added 17 and Toronto spoiled Chicago's home opener.

The defending NBA champions went on a run in the second quarter to take a 48-40 halftime lead and pulled away for their 10th straight win over the cold-shooting Bulls.

Anunoby hit three 3-pointers, and Serge Ibaka added 18 points and seven rebounds. Fred VanVleet scored 16 as the Raptors shook off a loss Friday in Boston.

Wendell Carter Jr. led Chicago with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Zach LaVine scored 11 after averaging 26.5 over the first two games. Lauri Markkanen struggled again, finishing with nine points for the second straight night.

ROCKETS 126, PELICANS 123

HOUSTON (AP) - James Harden scored 29 points, Russell Westbrook added his second straight triple-double with 28 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds and Houston sent New Orleans to its first 0-3 start since the 2016-27 season.

Westbrook hit two clutch free throws to give Houston the three-point lead with 6.1 seconds remaining. Josh Hart missed a 3 at the buzzer to give Houston the win.

Westbrook and Harden combined for 12 turnovers, with Harden leading the game with eight. Harden was 2 of 18 from the 3-point line and 8 for 29 from the field, but was 11 of 12 from the free throw line.

Brandon scored 35 points while adding a game-high 15 rebounds. Lonzo Ball had 18 points on 4-of-9 shooting from 3-point range.

SPURS 124, WIZARDS 122

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - DeMar DeRozan scored 26 points, including the game-winning basket in heavy traffic in the final seconds, and San Antonio beat Washington.

Davis Bertans, traded from San Antonio to Washington in the offseason, made all five of his 3-point attempts and scored 23 points against his former team.

The Spurs recorded their 20th straight home victory over Washington with some late heroics.

Aldridge led the Spurs with 27 points. Dejounte Murray had 10 points, 10 rebounds and four assists and Bryn Forbes added 16 points.

Bradley Beal had 25 points and Rui Hachimura added 16 points for the Wizards.

JAZZ 113, KINGS 81

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Bojan Bogdanovic hit five 3-pointers and scored 26 points, powering Utah past Sacramento.

Donovan Mitchell added 15 points, while Mike Conley chipped in 12 points and eight assists. Georges Niang added 12 points off the bench. Utah shot 48.6% from 3-point range.

Dwayne Dedmon scored 11 points and Bogdan Bogdanovic added 10 for the Kings, who failed to overcome 37% shooting from the field.

The teams combined for 39 turnovers.

Sacramento coach Luke Walton pulled all of his starters at once with 8:39 remaining in the third quarter after the Kings fell behind by 32 points. Only Dwayne Dedmon returned in the fourth quarter.

Warriors F Looney out two games
October 26, 2019
By The Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Golden State Warriors forward Kevon Looney will miss at least two games because of a hamstring injury.

Looney sat out the entire preseason with a strained right hamstring, then started the season opener Thursday before dealing with tightness in the hamstring again. He didn't play in the second half of a 141-122 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers in the first game at new Chase Center.

The Warriors play Sunday at Oklahoma City and Monday at New Orleans.

The Warriors said Saturday that Looney will be evaluated by a team of specialists because of an ''on-going presence of a neuropathic condition in his body, which has a direct correlation to his recent injury.'' An update on his status will be provided by the team once tests are complete and the Golden State medical staff has a chance to collaborate with the specialists.

Looney played a bulk of the minutes at center during the postseason, but suffered a first costal cartilage fracture on the right side of his rib cage.

Thunder rout Warriors 120-92 for 1st win of season
October 27, 2019
By The Associated Press

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Dennis Schroder scored 22 points to help the Oklahoma City Thunder rout the Golden State Warriors 120-92 on Sunday for their first victory of the season.

The blowout matched Oklahoma City's largest margin of victory over the Warriors since the franchise moved from Seattle before the 2008-09 season.

Danilo Gallinari added 21 points and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 19 points and nine rebounds for the Thunder. They opened the season with losses to Utah and Washington.

TRAIL BLAZERS 121, MAVERICKS 119

DALLAS (AP) - Damian Lillard made a twisting layup with 26 seconds remaining and scored 26 of his 28 points in the second half in Portland's Dallas victory over Dallas.

Lillard's basket gave the Blazers a 120-119 lead. Dallas' Luka Doncic then missed a 3-point attempt and Portland won a challenge of a call that would have sent the Mavericks' Dorian Finney-Smith to the foul line.

Instead, there was a jump ball. The Blazers' Kent Bazemore got the ball and was fouled. He made the first of two free throws. Doncic rebounded and passed to Tim Hardaway, whose shot from about midcourt rattled off the front of the rim a time expired.

CJ McCollum led Portland with 35 points. Kristaps Porzingis scored 32 points for Dallas, and Doncic had 29 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists.

GRIZZLIES 134, NETS 133, OT

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Jae Crowder hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key as time expired in overtime, lifting Memphis past Brooklyn for its first victory of the season.
