— Fairfield 89, Boston College 83— Worst thing is that Fairfield was favored to win.


— DeMarcus Cousins has 103 career technical fouls, 23 more than anyone else during that time.

32) Browns— Have shot at their first win when the warm weather Chargers visit Lake Erie on Christmas Eve.


31) 49ers— Lost their last 13 games, but play team they got their only win against this week, when they visit Los Angeles. Rams are actually favored to win a game.


30) Jaguars— They can’t even fire their coach right; word got out that they canned Gus Bradley before the team plane took off from Houston. Apparently the flight home was fairly awkward.


29) Rams– Good chance for Goff’s first career win this week.


9) Packers— They’ve had Favre/Rodgers at QB for the last 25 years; shouldn’t they have won more than two Super Bowls?


8) Dolphins— Other than a healthy Tony Romo, Matt Moore is the best backup QB in the NFL and now Miami fans are going to find that out. Only time Dolphins made playoffs in last 14 years was the year Brady tore up his knee in Week 1 and missed the rest of that year.


7) Seahawks— Their starting RT was a basketball player at Western Kentucky who played about one half of one college football game.


6) Falcons— They just pounded the dregs of the NFL, now they step up in class this week and have a rematch with the Panthers, who are playing on a very short week.


T4) Raiders/Chiefs— Oakland has the better record but the Chiefs beat them twice. Not fond of KC blowing two games at home in the last month; they need to be better in the red zone.


3) Giants— Not a huge fan of theirs but they win every week and that is what counts. This is where I tell you that the NFL should take radios out of players’ helmets and let the QB’s call their own damn plays- thats why you prepare for six days to play on Sunday. NFL would have a way better product if they let Game Day be the Players’ Day.


2) Cowboys— Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen is being mentioned for the Rams’ HC job, in large part because he was Dak Prescott’s college coach. I can think of worse things.


1— Patriots— What happens when a big time college QB refuses to play in a bowl game so he doesn’t get hurt and ruin his draft prospects? I’m thinking if a QB did that it would hurt his stock a lot, since the QB is a team leader and the captain doesn’t desert his ship, even if it is sinking.

LAS VEGAS -- Josh Jackson scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds as No. 3 Kansas cruised past UNLV 71-53 on Thursday night.


It was the 11th straight win for the Jayhawks (11-1) since a 103-99 overtime loss to Indiana in the State Farm Armed Forces Classic in Honolulu.


Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk scored 20 points, including 4-of-6 3-pointers, and Frank Mason III added 13 points, eight assists and five rebounds for Kansas.


Tyrell Green led UNLV (7-6) with 12 points. Kris Clyburn finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Jalen Poyser added 10 points for the Runnin' Rebels, who lost for the fourth time in six games.


Jackson had 14 points and five rebounds in the first half despite sitting out the final six minutes with two fouls as Kansas built a 42-20 halftime lead.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Hoosiers arrived ready to shoot from long range in obliterating the Governors with 15 3-pointers.


Indiana (10-2) was well aware of the scouting report on Austin Peay (4-9), which allowed 18 3-pointers two days ago in a home loss to Lipscomb. The 15 3-pointers tied a season high set in a season-opening victory over No. 3 Kansas in Hawaii.


James Blackmon Jr.'s game-high 24 points included four 3-pointers. The hottest Hoosier early on was Robert Johnson, who made five of his six 3-pointers in the opening half and finished with 20 points.

MORAGA, Calif. -- Jock Landale recorded 20 points and 11 rebounds as the Gaels warmed up for the start of West Coast Conference play with an easy victory over the Bulldogs.


Tanner Krebs had 11 points, and Calvin Hermanson added 10 points and six boards for Saint Mary's (10-1), which outrebounded South Carolina State 42-16.


The Bulldogs (3-9) were led by Eric Eaves, who had 11 points.


South Carolina State hung with the Gaels through the first half and trailed 33-26 with 17:24 left. But back-to-back 3-pointers by Emmett Naar pushed the margin to 13 points, and the Bulldogs were unable to recover.

LAS VEGAS -- Elijah Stewart scored 21 points to lead the Trojans to victory over the Bears in the Las Vegas Classic at Orleans Arena.


Jordan McLaughlin had 19 points and five assists for USC (12-0), which is enjoying its best start and its longest winning streak since going 16-0 to open the 1970-71 season. The Trojans play Wyoming on Friday in a final-round game in Las Vegas.


Chimezie Metu had 13 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots for USC.


Alize Johnson posted 17 points and nine rebounds for Missouri State (8-4), which had its three-game winning streak snapped.


No. 24 Cincinnati 93, Marshall 91 (OT)


CINCINNATI -- Troy Caupain's put-back with seven-tenths of a second remaining lifted the Bearcats to a thrilling victory over the Thundering Herd.


Gary Clark scored a career-high 26 points and Jacob Evans added 25 for Cincinnati (10-2), which overcame a 3-point shooting barrage by Marshall (7-5) in the first half.


Stevie Browning scored 28 points with six 3-pointers and Jon Elmore added 20 points for the Thundering Herd, who made a season-high 17 made 3-pointers -- the most the Bearcats ever allowed and two shy of Marshall's school record.


The Thundering Herd had a season-high 14 3s in the first half and led 50-38 at halftime before Cincinnati rallied after the break.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Albeit on different scales, No. 11 West Virginia and Northern Kentucky enter Friday's matchup attempting to gain a better grip on handling success.


The Mountaineers (10-1) won their sixth straight game 84-57 over Radford despite an underwhelming second half that coach Bob Huggins labeled "really lethargic."


Northern Kentucky (9-3), after defeating NAIA member Brescia 97-73 to extend a five-game winning streak, heard coach John Brannen muttering similar criticism.


"I didn't think it was our best effort, and I was a little disappointed in how we came out," Brannen said. "I'm sitting here saying that with a 20-point win, but the bottom line is we have to get better."


Against West Virginia's waves of athleticism and pressure defense, the Norse probably need to play a lot better. No opponent has threatened the Mountaineers at home, where they're 8-0 with an average margin of victory exceeding 41 points.


Still, Huggins sees lapses from his players that won't be so tolerable once Big 12 play begins next week.


"It's a progression of things. You try to get competent at something and then you try to add something to it," he said. "And if you don't stay competent at the building blocks of what you're trying to do then everything's going to crumble. We're trying to explain to them that we don't want it to crumble."


While West Virginia dominated last year's meeting 107-61 in Morgantown, Northern Kentucky appears better than advertised in Brannen's second season. After being picked seventh in the 10-team Horizon League, the Norse are 4-1 in road games so far, with the loss coming at Illinois, 79-64.


"Schematically, they'll do as good a job as anybody has done against pressure," said Huggins, whose squad leads the nation by forcing 26.3 turnovers a game.


Sophomore forward Drew McDonald averages a team-high 17.3 points and 7.8 rebounds for NKU while guard Lavone Holland contributes 15.7 points and shoots 43 percent from 3-point range.

13) Eagles 24, Giants 19— Dallas is NFC East champ and #1 seed in NFC. Horrible late hit call on the Giants set up Philly’s third TD— one of the worst penalties ever. Carson Wentz was running and Eli Apple slid to avoid him but they made contact- it wouldn’t have been a foul in basketball.


12) The more I think about it, the more adamant I am that the NFL needs to rid itself of penalties for taunting, celebration and fines for uniform violations. They would gain millions of dollars in positive press and give mainstream media less stuff to whine about.


Players would police the celebrations themselves if they got out of hand and now and then they would for sure. But it would also get people talking more about what they saw and that generates lots of free publicity. Nothing wrong with that.


11) 1B/DH Edwin Encarnacion signed with Cleveland for three years, $60M.

7) Idaho 61, Colorado State 50— High scoring Potato Bowl, but who wants to go to a bowl and freeze your butt off? Idaho plays its home games in a dome; their QB is Matt Linehan, whose dad is the Dallas Cowboys’ OC. Vandals are de-emphasizing football after next year, so this will be a great memory for everyone associated with the program.


6) NFL will have a 4-team developmental league next spring, which sounds very similar to what the ill-fated UFL was a few years ago. Teams will play six games each.


5) Random food comments:
— Aria Cafe is open 24/7 and it is outstanding. Had chicken and waffles for the first time, and their fettuccini alfredo is tremendous.
— Pizzeria near the Aria sports book is expensive and um, no bueno. Greasiest pizza I’ve ever had, seriously, and I’ve eaten a large amount of pizza.
— Highly recommend the egg nog milkshakes at McDonald’s.


4) USC 83, Missouri State 75— Trojans are 12-0, a highly unlikely unbeaten team.


3) Cincinnati 93, Marshall 91 OT— Credit to Dan D’Antoni, Marshall’s coach/Mike’s brother; you score 91 points on Cincinnati, even with an extra 5:00, thats some great offense. D’Antoni has made the Thundering Herd a competitive team fairly quickly.

Utah forces 23 turnovers, beats SFA 74-66
December 25, 2016


HONOLULU (AP) After playing a couple of late-night games, Utah had an early wake-up call Christmas morning.


Not that it needed it.


Utah got off to a hot start and never relinquished it in a 74-66 win over Stephen F. Austin in the fifth-place game of the Diamond Head Classic Sunday.


David Collette scored 17 points on 8-of-8 shooting, JoJo Zamora and Devon Daniels had 16 each and Lorenzo Bonam added 12 for the Utes (9-3), who shot 58.5 percent (24 of 41) from the field.


Utah scored 30 points off of 23 turnovers by the Lumberjacks (5-7).


The game tipped off shortly after 7:30 a.m. local time.


''I've said I've got to be careful what you wish for, because my entire life coaching when we get these late games I've always said `man, I wish we could just play at seven in the morning and get it done,' and then have the rest of the day free,'' Utes coach Larry Krystkowiak said. ''This is one of those examples of where we had to do that.''


Gabe Bealer's 3-pointer from the right corner off an assist from Collette gave Utah its largest lead at 49-35 and capped a 10-2 run with 12:26 left to play.


Stephen F. Austin got as close as 55-51 following a pair of free throws by Chase Winchester with 5:13 remaining.


The Utes made just 2 of 6 from the free-throw line in the first half, but were 18 of 22 in the second. They were 14 of 16 in the final 10 minutes of the game and made their final 10 attempts.


''We've had a couple games where that's been real important to us,'' Krystkowiak said. ''It's real important when you've got the momentum kind of shifting the other direction to make those. That's how teams catch up, when you don't put points on the board.''


Leon Gilmore III had 13 points, Ty Charles 11 and Ivan Canete 10 for the Lumberjacks.


Utah opened the game with a 9-0 run, but went scoreless for a stretch of more than five minutes while Stephen F. Austin used a 14-5 run to get within 20-18.


The Lumberjacks used a 2-3 zone to slow down the Utes.


''We played mostly zone the last 12, 13 minutes of the (first) half and just hoped they missed,'' Stephen F. Austin first-year coach Kyle Keller said. ''Fortunately they did and it got us back in the game. It slowed the tempo down at a decent pace and we were able to stay in the game.''


The Utes took a 32-26 lead into halftime.


It was just the second meeting between the schools and the first since Utah beat Stephen F. Austin 57-50 in the second round of the 2015 NCAA Tournament.


BIG PICTURE


Utah: The Utes committed more turnovers than they had assists for the third consecutive game. They had 18 turnovers to 17 assists Sunday and turned it over a combined 57 times against 45 assists in their three Diamond Head Classic games.


Stephen F. Austin: The Lumberjacks are now 1-11 against current members of the Pac-12, with the lone win coming on Dec. 2, 1988 against Washington State in a neutral-site game in Akron, Ohio.


LOST THE BOARDS


Utah was outrebounded for just the second time in a game this season. The Utes grabbed 20 rebounds to 24 for Stephen F. Austin. The only other time the Utes were outrebounded (29 to 25) was in Thursday's 89-86 loss to San Francisco. They entered Sunday's game averaging 43.9 rebounds, which ranks eighth in the NCAA.


INJURY BUG


Stephen F. Austin sophomore forward TJ Holyfield was held out as a precautionary measure. Holyfield, the team's second-leading scorer with 12.2 points per game, sustained an undisclosed injury in a practice Saturday.

Utah will open Pac-12 play Sunday, when it hosts Colorado.


Stephen F. Austin will face Houston Baptist in its Southland Conference opener Saturday.

Hawaii finishes 7th in Diamond Head Classic
December 25, 2016


HONOLULU (AP) Jack Purchase made five 3-pointers and scored 17 points, and Hawaii snapped a four-game losing streak with a 60-46 victory over Southern Mississippi in the seventh-place game of the Diamond Head Classic on Sunday.


Hawaii went on a 10-0 run to stretch its lead to 21 points midway through the second half as Southern Miss went scoreless for five-plus minutes.


Gibson Johnson added 10 points for Hawaii (5-7), which made 10 shots from distance.


Hawaii's 10-2 spurt late in the first half was capped by Purchase's third 3-pointer for a 30-20 lead. He scored 11 points in the half as Hawaii held a 32-22 advantage after making 7 of 15 3s.


Southern Miss was held to 7-of-23 shooting (30 percent) in the first half and finished at 32.7 percent.


Michael Ramey hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points for Southern Miss (3-9), which has lost eight in a row.

Ill. State cruises to 3rd in Diamond Head
December 25, 2016


HONOLULU (AP) Paris Lee scored 18 points, Deontae Hawkins added 16 and Illinois State cruised past Tulsa 68-56 on Sunday for third place in the Diamond Head Classic.


Illinois State (8-4) opened the game on a 16-0 run and Tulsa (6-6) didn't get on the board until freshman Joseph Battle hit a 3-pointer at the 13:19 mark. The Golden Hurricane's were just one for their first 11 shots from the field.


Pat Birt made Tulsa's second basket - also a 3 - with 9:39 left and the Golden Hurricane's trailed 23-7. Their third make was also from behind the arc but Illinois State answered with a 3 for an 18-point lead and the Redbirds led by double figures until the final minutes of the game.


The Redbirds led by as many as 20 points in the first half and had a 16-point advantage at the break.


Junior Etou made 13 of 14 free-throw attempts and scored a career-high 22 points for Tulsa, which missed its first eight field-goal attempts of the second half. The Golden Hurricane's were just 14-of-52 shooting (26.9 percent) and turned it over 18 times.

San Diego State beats USF for Diamond Head Classic title
December 25, 2016


HONOLULU (AP) Zylan Cheatham had 16 points and 11 rebounds to help San Diego State beat San Francisco 62-48 on Sunday night for the Diamond Head Classic championship.


San Diego State (8-4) hit nine 3-poiners against the Dons to set a tournament record with 29 makes over three games.


San Francisco got within two points - for the fourth time in the second half - with 11:46 remaining but the Dons couldn't get any closer the rest of the way. SDSU's Jeremy Hemsley hit a 3-pointer with 4:19 left for a 10-point lead.


Hemsley, who entered averaging 16.6 points in his sophomore season, picked up his fourth foul with 18:49 left in the second half and finished with 12 points. Malik Pope missed his second straight game for the Aztecs due to a knee injury suffered in the quarterfinals.


The Aztecs led 32-28 at halftime after shooting 50 percent. Charles Minlend kept USF close by making three 3-pointers and scoring 13 points.


Minlend finished with 18 points for San Francisco (10-3). The Dons, who entered ranked fifth nationally at 42.7 percent from 3-point range, made just 4 of 20 from distance.
