Preview: Wildcats (6-0) at Quakers (2-2)
Date: November 29, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

PHILADELPHIA -- The defending national champion Villanova Wildcats opened the 2016-17 season with six games in 13 days.

It was a grueling stretch for the No. 2-ranked team.

But they came away with six victories, including their most recent 63-47 win over the College of Charleston last Wednesday. After the win, the victorious Wildcats looked a bit weary.

A much-needed break was waiting and they'll now be rested and ready when they open the Big Five portion of their schedule Tuesday night versus city rival Penn (7 p.m. ET) at the Palestra.

"This break comes at a good time for us," Villanova head coach Jay Wright said. "It was good for us to experience this. We got a lot of our offense and defense in knowing that we would face this stretch where we wouldn't get a lot of practice in. I think it paid off for us. We were prepared but, on the other hand, I don't know if we were mentally prepared for this many games back-to-back. We had a couple of them -- Western Michigan, maybe this one -- where we didn't have great energy."

Preseason player-of-the-year candidate Josh Hart led the way against the Cougars with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Hart has been a team leader and a budding star thus far this season.

"We need to learn to bring it every night," Wright said. "That was the key to Ryan (Arcidiacono) and Daniel (Ochefu) last year. They had a mature approach to every game. Their approach was like that of a 15-year NBA veteran -- they came to work every day. Josh is really getting good at that. But our team's got to get good at that."

The Quakers (2-2) opened their season with four consecutive road games -- wins at Robert Morris and Central Connecticut State and a loss at Miami and, most recently, a two-point loss at Navy last Wednesday.

Junior Caleb Wood led Penn in scoring for the second game in a row with 15 points at Navy.

Sophomore Jackson Donahue knocked down four treys, which are as many as he hit in the Quakers' first three games combined. Donahue added six assists for a career high.

But Penn made just four -- and attempted six -- free throws with none coming in the second half.

Now the Quakers get a chance to come back home with a difficult matchup in Villanova. It's a daunting task for sure.

"It isn't easy to play on the road in college basketball, and we've started the season with four straight away from home," Penn head coach Steve Donahue told the Daily Pennsylvanian after the loss at Navy. "Winning this game would've been a great step for us, but I think regardless of the result we showed some of the growth this team has had in the past couple weeks. It's just about overcoming some of the things we didn't do well today and getting ready for a tough game against Villanova."

Preview: (5-2) at Musketeers (6-0)
Date: November 29, 2016 6:30 PM EDT

CINCINNATI -- Seventh-ranked Xavier allowed an average of 83 points in its first five games.

But, in the past two contests, both against Northern Iowa -- one of the nation's best 3-point shooting teams -- the Musketeers gave up only 59 and 42 points, respectively.

Defense was a struggle for Xavier at times last season, too. But, it appears this season's team is beginning to figure things out at that end of the floor.

"I don't worry about offense, I never do," said head coach Chris Mack. "We'll figure out ways to score. We're going to have those nights when we don't. But if we defend at this level, we'll be in most every game we play."

The Musketeers finally get to face a new opponent when they host North Dakota State on Tuesday night (6:30 p.m. ET) at Cintas Center.

Among the keys to the turnaround is the maturation of point guard Edmond Sumner, a dynamic offensive player who's taken some time to develop into a quality defender. He held Northern Iowa's hot shooting guard Jeremy Morgan scoreless in the first half of Saturday's 64-42 win.

"Edmond a year ago was lost off the ball," said Mack. "He's grown up a lot."

Xavier (6-0) played Northern Iowa twice in six days -- in the championship game of the Tire Pros Invitational in Orlando (won by Xavier 67-59) and in Saturday's regularly scheduled matchup at Cintas Center.

It was the first time since 1960 that the Musketeers played the same non-conference opponent in consecutive games.

Now Xavier faces an opponent it has never met.

The Bison (5-2) are coming off a 64-50 loss to Missouri State on Sunday in which they couldn't overcome a 17-point halftime deficit. North Dakota State got 19 points from sophomore guard Khy Kabellis and Paul Miller finished with nine, but it never was closer than 10 points after halftime.

The Bison boast one of the nation's top 3-point shooters in junior guard A.J. Jacobson, although he connected just once in Sunday's loss. He is 14-of-18 from beyond the arc this season. The Bison shoot 36 percent as a team from 3-point range.

Kabellis getting on a roll bodes well for North Dakota State. He scored 13 of his points in the second half and was 3 of 7 from 3-point range Sunday.

"It was nice to see him get going," Bison coach David Richman told the Fargo Form. "We needed that from the start though, from everybody."

The Bison will need contributions from everyone if they are going to be competitive against Xavier, a top-10 Big East Conference opponent on the road.

The Musketeers are firing on all cylinders, led by J.P. Macura, who's averaging 17.7 points and 3.5 assists. Guards Trevon Bluiett and Sumner both are averaging better than 16 points per game.

Xavier must not get caught looking ahead to Saturday's clash with No. 9 Baylor in Waco, Texas.

"Good teams lock in on the challenge and the moment," said Mack.

Preview: Orange (4-1) at Badgers (5-2)
Date: November 29, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

The Big Ten/ACC Challenge game between No. 17 Wisconsin and No. 22 Syracuse on Tuesday features two teams that faced each other last year in the event, but this meeting is in a different location.

The Badgers (5-2) host the Orange on Tuesday (7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN) at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis. Last season, the Badgers upset then-No. 17 Syracuse 66-58 in overtime at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y.

Wisconsin forward Ethan Happ posted a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds in the victory, in which the Badgers scored 13 of the final 16 points in the extra session and were 7 of 7 from the free-throw line. Senior forward Nigel Hayes contributed 15 points and 12 rebounds for Wisconsin.

Syracuse senior guard Andrew White III, a graduate transfer from Nebraska, scored 10 points apiece in two games last season against Wisconsin while playing for the Cornhuskers. White is the Orange's current scoring leader at 15.8 points per game

Syracuse (4-1) took its first loss of the season Saturday, a 64-50 setback to South Carolina in the Brooklyn Hoops Holiday Invitational.

The Orange's roster is filled with new and young players vying for key minutes, including sophomore guard Frank Howard, freshman forward Taurean Thompson and guard John Gillon, a transfer from Colorado State.

Orange coach Jim Boeheim said his team looked "a little bit lost" with a lack of ball movement and dribble penetration, and Syracuse also missed 10 of 26 free throws against South Carolina.

Boeheim's ideal situation would be putting Howard and Gillon in at guard and having White at a forward spot. However, he said Thompson likely is the team's best low-post option, and he would like the freshman to get more touches.

"We don't have a low-post game, so we have to get penetration from our guards," the coach said.

Boeheim said the atmosphere of the South Carolina game at the Barclays Center wasn't a problem for his young players. Still, the Orange shot just 31.8 percent (14 of 44) from the field and only had eight points in the paint.

"It shouldn't be (a problem)," Boeheim said. "(The fans) were on our side. If they have a problem with this, they're really going to have a problem Tuesday night when we go to Wisconsin. Our young guys have got a lot to learn."

Wisconsin coach Greg Gard got the opportunity to spread minutes to reserves in easy wins at home, but the veteran Badgers will have to place focus on attacking the rim, decreasing turnovers and not relying on their perimeter game.

Hayes scored 17 points in 19 minutes in a 95-50 blowout of Prairie View A&M on Sunday to lead six Wisconsin players who scored in double digits. Senior guard Bronson Koenig's leadership will be critical against Syracuse. Koenig drained a 3-pointer and had a free throw to rally Wisconsin and force overtime last season at the Carrier Dome.

Gard said he is confident his team will perform well if the Badgers stay focused, despite the short preparation time.

"They're really good and talented," Gard said of the Orange. "Coach Boeheim, obviously, has been there forever, and they're really good at what they do.

"It's a quick turnaround to play that type of team in 48 hours with one practice, but we have to build off of (the Prairie View A&M game)."

Preview: Rams (5-1) at Crusaders (6-1)
Date: November 29, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

No. 23 Rhode Island extended its strong start Saturday night -- and didn't even do it on the basketball court.

Dan Hurley's players, who won their only game last week -- over Belmont -- and should remain ranked when the new poll comes out Monday, served dinner and prepared beds at the Providence Rescue Mission, according to a post on the team's Twitter account.

It was another quality effort by a team off to a 5-1 start, the only loss to then-No. 1 Duke.

Now, it's back to work -- and this will be a test for the Rams.

Rhode Island visits Valparaiso (6-1) on Tuesday and then has its always tough local rivalry game against Providence at the Dunkin' Donuts Center -- the Friars' home floor -- Saturday.

Hassan Martin scored 34 points and Jarvis Garrett, over his neck injury suffered against Cincinnati in the semifinal of the Hall of Fame Tip-Off, added 23 in the win over Belmont, the preseason favorite in the Ohio Valley Conference.

"Once I got myself going I just didn't stop," Martin said after going 14-for-20 from the floor and adding five rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals. "That's why I had that type of game."

Martin will be needed against Valparaiso, which beat Ball State 79-73 at home Sunday and now hosts a ranked team for the first time in six years.

The Crusaders came off the road and ran up 17 steals while forcing 23 turnovers and overcoming a slow start to win against Ball State.

"We talked about a nine-day road trip and the challenges that presents," Valparaiso coach Matt Lottich said after Sunday's game. "Fatigue, just the normal human tendency maybe after a couple big wins to maybe let up a little bit. I thought our energy lacked a little bit (in the first half), but we were playing hard."

Alec Peters scored 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds to key Sunday's win and continue his torrid start. Through seven games, he is averaging 25.1 points and 9.1 rebounds while Shane Hammink is at 16.1 and 5.6 per game.

The Rams have four starters scoring in double figures, led by Martin at 16.5 points per game and E.C. Matthews at 15.5. Jared Terrell is averaging 14.3 points and Kuran Iverson 11.0 points and 6.2 rebounds. Martin leads with 7.0 rebounds while Garrett has a team-high 27 assists and 12 turnovers.

Rhode Island ended a stretch of five games in 10 days with the loss to Duke, which followed a win over then-No. 24 Cincinnati the previous night.

The win over Belmont, which was missing its best player, Evan Bradds, featured the Rams with a 30- and 20-point scorer in the same game for the first time in almost two years.

Preview: 49ers (1-7) at Jayhawks (5-1)
Date: November 29, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

The dogged ability of Frank Mason to drive to the rim coupled with the streaky outside shooting touch possessed by Devonte' Graham are what gets noticed most about the smaller guards in the Kansas backcourt.

Yet each guard contributes in other ways, as evidenced by the 11 assists Graham distributed in the No. 4 Jayhawks' last victory, a 95-57 rout of North Carolina-Asheville.

"I thought (Graham) was really good," Kansas coach Bill Self said. "Frank scored the points (21), but I thought Devonte' was certainly the facilitator."

Graham did so while surrounded by new starters.

Self altered his lineup to include freshman center Udoka Azubuike and sophomore guard Lagerald Vick. Each contributed mightily, combining for 32 points. Azubuike slammed seven dunks while going 8-for-9 from the field and Vick went 6-for-7 and grabbed nine rebounds.

Expect the new lineup, which also features one of the nation's top freshmen, 6-foot-8 guard Josh Jackson, to remain intact as Kansas (5-1) continues a five-game homestand Tuesday against Long Beach State (1-7) at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kan.

"If Dok and Lagerald play like that," said Self, "that's the best production we've gotten all year long from those two spots, so it could be permanent."

That, of course, was meant as a motivational message, laced in truth, to the players they supplanted in the starting lineup, senior center Landen Lucas and sophomore forward Carlton Bragg.

Count on Mason and Graham to be regulars, however, along with Jackson.

Mason has topped the Jayhawks in scoring in five of six games and ranks second in the Big 12 Conference with a 21.5-point average while chipping in 5.0 assists and 4.3 rebounds. Graham averages 13 points and leads the Jayhawks in assists (34) and steals (10). Jackson averages 14.3 points, 5.0 assists and 4.3 rebounds.

With those three players as mainstays, Self has the depth to use different combinations best suited for the opponents Kansas faces.

Considering Azubuike checks in as a 7-footer listed at 280 pounds, the Jayhawks have a frontline force who can impact the lane as long as he stays out of foul trouble.

"We'll start based on scouting report a lot of times, and we haven't ever done that," Self projected. "But if a team plays small, we'll probably go small. If a team plays two bigs, we may go two bigs. But certainly it was nice to see Udoka have some success because, you know, he is a physical presence that we don't have and he can get so much better."

Long Beach State, the preseason Big West favorite, will be making its eighth stop as part of a nine-game road swing. The brutal stretch has resulted in seven straight defeats -- at Wichita State, North Carolina, Louisville, UCLA, Washington, Binghamton and Florida Gulf Coast. The 49ers' only win was at home in their opener against Cal State-Los Angeles.

In its most recent game, Long Beach scored the first five points in overtime but lost to Florida Gulf Coast 68-67 on a layup with 2.4 seconds remaining.

Although Dan Monson approved the grueling early-season run as a method to strengthen the 49ers' resolve, and resume', the 10th-year coach expressed some regret.

"I'm really concerned about them mentally because of all the years I've done this, this has been the hardest stretch and this team was not ready for it," Monson told the Orange County Register.

The schedule has also prompted Monson to look at various combinations. Ten players average 11-plus minutes.

Junior forward Gabe Levin leads Long Beach State in scoring (13.0) and rebounding (7.6).

Preview: Bulls (4-2) at Bluejays (6-0)
Date: November 29, 2016 8:30 PM EDT

Creighton begins the third week of the regular season, featuring a pair of games against Mid-American Conference opponents, from a higher perch in the Associated Press rankings.

The 6-0 Bluejays jumped two spots to No. 10 in the latest rankings, released Monday. It's the third time in school history that Creighton has appeared in the Top 10 since the poll was founded in 1949.

Jays coach Greg McDermott said the new rating is a nice way to show how the season is progressing for Creighton, which is one of three Big East teams in the Top 10.

"Because we started the preseason ranked in the Top 25 it means you've played okay so far," McDermott said. "We've taken care of business to this point. Our offense has been incredibly efficient but those polls mean a lot more later in the season than they do now."

McDermott said he talked with the team before the new ratings were published about the importance of remembering where the Bluejays were less than a year ago and the role they had in these kinds of games.

"We have to remember back last year when we went on the road to Providence, Butler, Xavier and Villanova, Seton Hall, teams that were ranked in the Top 25," McDermott said. "How you have just a little bit extra motivation when you go into those environments."

That's the perspective Buffalo will have when the Bulls play the Jays in Tuesday's 7:45 p.m. showdown at CenturyLink Center. The Bulls, who are the defending MAC postseason tournament champions, enter the game 4-2 after finishing third at last week's Great Alaska Shootout.

"Now the shoe is on the other foot," McDermott said. "A team like Buffalo comes in here in search of a signature win. They're an NCAA tournament team from a year ago, and they played very well in the NCAA tournament. A lot of those guys return."

Blake Hamilton leads the Bulls with 16.7 points per game and is second in both rebounds (6.7) and assists (4.2). Leading rebounder Nick Perkins is second in scoring at 13.7 per game to go with his 8.2 boards per outing.

Creighton counters with its deep offensive rotation that leads the nation in three-point shooting (47.9 percent) and is second in overall field goal percentage (.547) while averaging 91.8 points per game. That number puts the Jays eighth nationally in scoring.

Marcus Foster was named player of the week while Justin Patton earned freshman of the week honors in the Big East Conference. Foster averaged 20.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in Creighton's two victories last week.

Patton averaged 14 points and 5.5 rebounds in those same two games. The 7-foot redshirt freshman from Omaha North also had two assists, two blocked shots and a steal. Patton scored 22 of his 28 points in the second half of those wins over Mississippi and Loyola (Md.).

"It means a lot to me because I take my game week by week every week," Foster said. "My teammates really helped me get it. They looked for me a lot and I got (some) easy baskets from them."

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke is ready for another test from an established opponent, while Michigan State has probably seen enough of the elite teams so far this season.

The teams clash Tuesday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium as part of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

"They're going to be hungry," Duke guard Matt Jones said. "It should be a good matchup for us. I know our guys will be ready for it."

Fifth-ranked Duke (6-1) is riding a four-game winning since losing to Kansas. Michigan State responded to place third in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, but it has been a treacherous opening stretch for the Spartans (4-3), who've fallen out of the national rankings under coach Tom Izzo.

"Tom's team has a played a heck of a schedule and they've had some injuries as well," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said.

Duke won't have heralded freshmen Marques Bolden, Harry Giles or Jayson Tatum for this game, Krzyzewski said, as none of them has made a collegiate debut due to various injuries. However, Bolden and Giles both appear closer to being available after going through warm-ups with the Blue Devils prior to two games last week.

Izzo said his team has looked fatigued during the opening weeks.

"With this travel schedule we're on, we're bound to be fatigued a little bit," Izzo said. "And worse than anything is we looked soft inside. That almost never happens here. Some of it is due to injury."

But the Blue Devils are expecting Michigan State's top effort.

"They're tough and we're playing against a program, not a team," Krzyzewski said. "...I admire what they do. Hopefully, I won't admire a lot of what they do on Tuesday, but we know we're in for a big-time game, which is good because that's how we'll get better."

Duke has won at least six of its first seven games for the 17th season in a row. Plus, the Blue Devils own a 129-game homecourt winning streak against non-conference competition.

Michigan State has not allowed an opponent to shoot 50 percent this season, while five of the foes have checked in at less than 40 percent from the field.

The Blue Devils have scored at least 70 points in every game. Only three Michigan State opponents have eclipsed 70 points, and the Spartans won two of those games.

Duke is trying to excel in different types of games.

"Game by game, play by play, possession by possession, we are starting to learn each other and we're getting better," said Jones, a senior who's expected to be one of the team's leaders. "I think that we're leading the guys better and those guys are working hard. Guys are getting experience."

Most of concern to Izzo this month has been shortcomings in toughness and rebounding, the latter coming in part because of a lack of size.

"We're going to find a way," Izzo said. "There's a lot of encouragement. We're going to find a way to get that back."

Krzyzewski called Michigan State freshman swingman Miles Bridges "a big-time player." He has scored at least 20 points in four of his seven games.

Duke freshman guard Frank Jackson has led his team in scoring three times, scoring in double figures in every game.

After Tuesday, the Spartans, who've already traveled to Honolulu, New York and the Bahamas, will play their next five games at home.

Duke has won 10 of 12 meetings with Michigan State, including the last five. This will be will the sixth meeting between the programs since 2010.

The Blue Devils are 15-2 all-time in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, marking both the most victories and best winning percentage of any team in either league. Duke is 3-0 against Michigan State in ACC-Big Ten Challenge games, while the Blue Devils are 7-0 in Challenge games at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Tuesday's Tip Sheet
November 29, 2016

**Syracuse at Wisconsin**

-- As of early this morning, most betting shops had Wisconsin (5-2 straight up, 1-3 against the spread) installed as a 5.5-point home favorite vs. the ‘Cuse. The total was 124.5, but there wasn’t a money line yet.

-- Greg Gard’s team has beaten up on three cupcakes at home in non-lined affairs. Wisconsin lost 79-67 at Creighton on Nov. 15 as a 1.5-point road favorite. Senior guard Bronson Koenig had a team-high 21 points in defeat, while senior power forward Nigel Hayes finished with 16 points, five assists and four rebounds.

-- Wisconsin advanced to the Maui Classic finals thanks to wins over Tennessee (74-62) and Georgetown (73-57). However, the Badgers lost 71-56 to North Carolina as 4.5-point ‘dogs in the championship game. Koenig suffered through a nightmare performance, scoring just two points on 1-of-13 shooting from the field. He missed all five of his 3-point attempts. Hayes was held to single digits as well, finishing with eight points and five rebounds. He was 3-of-11 from the field and 1-of-7 from downtown. Vitto Brown scored 15 points for UW, while Ethan Happ had 13 points, six rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocked shots.

-- Koenig is averaging a team-high 14.4 points per game, but he has a mediocre 12/12 assists-to-turnovers ratio. He’s hit only 24.6 percent of his 3’s. Happ (11.9 PPG, 9.4 RPG) is nearly averaging a double-double and is making 65.5 percent of his shots from the field. Hayes is averaging 11.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. Those numbers aren’t good for Hayes and Koenig, who are two of the nation’s premier players. Look for those stats to improve soon.

-- Syracuse (4-1 SU, 1-1 ATS) lost for the first time this year Saturday at Barclays Arena in Brooklyn. The Orange went down to South Carolina 64-50 as an 8.5-point favorite. Sindarius Thornwell led the Gamecocks with 16 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals. P.J. Dozier added 15 points, 10 boards and three steals. In the losing effort, Tyler Lydon had 18 points and seven rebounds, but he also committed six turnovers without dishing out an assist. Frank Howard and Andrew White III were also in double figures with 10 points.

-- Jim Boeheim’s team won its first four games at home over Colgate (83-55), Holy Cross (90-46), Monmouth (71-50) and South Carolina St. (101-59). The win over the Hawks as 12.5-point ‘chalk’ was the lone lined matchup. The ‘Cuse limited Monmouth star guard Justin Robinson to 11 points and 1-of-10 shooting from 3-point land. White, a grad transfer from Nebraska who also played at Kansas earlier in his collegiate career, had a team-best 18 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

-- White is averaging 15.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Lydon is scoring at a 11.4 PPG clip and is pulling down 7.2 RPG. Lydon, a sophomore forward, is 9-of-18 (50.0%) from behind the line and has a team-high seven rejections through five games.

-- The ‘under’ is 2-0 for the ‘Cuse. Meanwhile, Wisconsin has seen the ‘under’ go 3-1 overall.

**Michigan State at Duke**

-- As of early this morning, most books had Duke (6-1 SU, 3-3 ATS) listed as a 10.5-point favorite with a total of 144.5. There were no money-line prices listed yet.

-- Tom Izzo and Mike Krzyzewski have squared off nine times during their respective Hall of Fame careers. Coach K has an 8-1 record versus Izzo.

-- Duke star junior guard Grayson Allen is listed as ‘questionable’ due to a toe injury. Allen is averaging 16.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.3 steals per game. The Blue Devils are also missing three true freshmen, including a pair of five-star recruits in Harry Giles (knee) and Jayson Tatum (foot). The entire trio has missed every game to date.

-- Duke is unbeaten in four home games at Cameron Indoor Stadium, going 2-1 ATS in the three lined contests. The Blue Devils are off of Saturday’s 93-58 win over Appalachian St. as a 30.5-point home ‘chalk.’ The 151 combined points slithered ‘under’ the 153.5-point total. Allen played only 18 minutes but still produced 21 points, four rebounds and two assists without turnover. He buried 4-of-6 attempts from beyond the arc. Luke Kennard, a sophomore guard, finished with 18 points and nine rebounds thanks to 9-of-10 shooting from the free-throw line. Amile Jefferson contributed 15 points, six rebounds, five assists, two steals, one blocked shot and only one turnover.

-- Duke took its only loss to Kansas on Nov. 15 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. KU captured a 77-75 win as a 2.5-point underdog, while the 152 combined points went ‘under’ the 168-point tally. Frank Mason III hit a pull-up jumper in the lane with 1.8 seconds remaining to provide the winning points. Duke had rallied to pull even after trailing 65-55 with 5:48 remaining. Kennard paced the Blue Devils with a team-best 22 points. Allen had an off night with 12 points, three rebounds, three assists, one steal and one turnover. He shot just 4-of-15 from the field and 1-of-7 from 3-point range.

-- Duke won the Hall of Fame Tip-Off by defeating Rhode Island one day after beating Penn St. The Blue Devils won a 75-65 decision as 7.5-point favorites, while the 140 combined points stayed ‘under’ the 153-point total. Kennard drained 8-of-11 shots from the field and 4-of-5 from behind the line en route to scoring a game-high 24 points. Jefferson had 17 points and 15 rebounds.

-- Michigan St. (4-3 SU, 2-4 ATS) has played a brutal schedule to date, losing three neutral-court games to Arizona (65-63), Kentucky (69-48) and Baylor (73-58). The Spartans could’ve taken another defeat, but they were able to win a controversial game over Florida Gulf Coast, 78-77.

-- Izzo’s squad is off its best win of the year, defeating Wichita St. 77-72 as a 5.5-point underdog in Friday’s third-place game at The Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas. Freshman forward Miles Bridges scored 21 points and hit 4-of-8 of his 3-point launches. Matt McQuaid, Eron Harris and Nick Ward added 13 points apiece.

-- Bridges is a five-star recruit who has been ‘as advertised.’ He is averaging 17.4 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. He is shooting at a 50.0-percent clip from the field and a 40-percent rate from downtown. Harris (12.7 PPG) is connecting on 43.2 percent of his 3’s.

-- The ‘under’ is a perfect 6-0 overall for the Blue Devils, 3-0 in their home outings.

-- The ‘under’ is 4-2 overall for the Spartans, who are playing their first true road game here.

-- Tip-off is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Butler picked up an excellent non-conference road win last night by going into Salt Lake City and beating Utah by a 68-59 count as a one-point road favorite. The 7-0 Bulldogs forced the Utes into 18 turnovers and held them to abysmal 3-of-20 shooting (15.0%) from 3-point land. Kelan Martin had a team-high 18 points, while Tyler Wildeman pitched in 15 points.

-- Boise State led nearly the entire game at Oregon last night, only to come up on the wrong end of a 68-63 decision. Leon Rice’s bunch easily took the cash as an 18-point road underdog, but BSU money-line backers lost out on an outstanding chance to cash a sick 14/1 ticket. Paris Austin had a team-best 16 points, while senior power forward Nick Duncan finished with 15 on 5-of-13 shooting from downtown. Dylan Ennis’s 18 points and six rebounds paced the Ducks.

-- Kentucky stroked Arizona State 115-69 last night in the Bahamas. If you didn’t see the highlight yet, UK freshman Malik Monk made one of the sickest passes you’ll ever see. He finished with a team-high 23 points, while Isaiah Briscoe produced 20 points, four rebounds, three steals and seven assists compared to only one turnover. De’Aaron Fox had a triple-double with 14 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.
