NEW YORK (AP) Jimmy Butler scored 22 points and Dwyane Wade had 12 in the first road game with the Chicago Bulls, who improved to 3-0 by beating the Brooklyn Nets 118-88 on Monday night.

The Bulls had seven players in double figures, with Wade becoming the last of them when he left Bojan Bogdanovic behind with a crossover and was fouled on a drive to the basket in the fourth quarter.

Nikola Mirotic had 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Taj Gibson added 14 points and 11 boards for the Bulls.

After home victories against Eastern Conference playoff teams Boston and Indiana to open the season, the Bulls easily handled their road opener, leading by as many as 33 points.

Bogdanovic scored 15 points and Jeremy Lin had 14 for the Nets, who fell to 1-3.

HAWKS 106, KINGS 95

ATLANTA (AP) - Dwight Howard had 18 points, Kyle Korver and Dennis Schroder scored 17 points apiece, and the Hawks beat the Kings for their first 3-0 start in five seasons.

Every Atlanta starter scored in double figures, and the Hawks held Sacramento's DeMarcus Cousins in check after he averaged 30 points in the Kings' first three games. He finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Rudy Gay scored 22 points for Sacramento (2-2), which led 81-79 after three quarters. Matt Barnes also scored 14 points, and Ben McLemore finished with 12.

Howard went 8 for 20 from the line, but also contributed 11 rebounds and four blocked shots. Paul Millsap added 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

RAPTORS 105, NUGGETS 102

TORONTO (AP) - DeMar DeRozan scored 33 points and Kyle Lowry had 29, leading Toronto to the victory.

DeRozan is the first Raptor ever to start a season with three straight 30-point games, and his run is one short of Mike James' stretch from 2006 for the longest run at any point in the season.

Danilo Gallinari, Will Barton and Emmanuel Mudiay each had 16 points for Denver, and Jusuf Nurkic added 13 points and a career-high 18 rebounds.

Lowry hit a tiebreaking 14-footer with 1:36 remaining.

Tuesday’s six-pack

Six of the more interesting football games this weekend:

— Colorado (-12) over UCLA Thursday. Buffs have come a long way to be a double digit favorite in a league game.

— Eagles scored five TDs during recent 1-3 stretch; interesting game with the Giants, who are coming off a bye.

— Pitt-Miami— Hurricanes are on a 4-game losing streak.

— Steelers-Ravens— Will Big Ben play for Pittsburgh?

— Alabama-LSU— Tide won last four series games by average score of 29-16.

—First place in AFC West is at stake in Denver-Oakland game Sunday night in the Coliseum.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

13) Cam Newton was whining about late hits again Sunday, after Carolina beat the Cardinals. Guess he did it then so people could not call him a sore loser, since they had won.

Best part of this is that Carolina goes to LA next week to play the Rams, usually thought of as a dirty team. Refs might start throwing flags during warmups, just to get loosened up. Great.

12) Coco Crisp was going to get $13M from the A’s in 2017 if he played in 140 games this year, something like that. Since his skills are in decline, they were making sure he wasn’t going to reach 140 games, and he voiced his displeasure with that.

Note: It would’ve been incredibly stupid to pay him $13M next year. Fair or unfair, it was good business.

So to quiet the storm and I guess reward a player who had helped the A’s over the last few years, Oakland dealt him to the Indians on August 31 for an obscure lefty reliever named Colt Hynes. Weird circumstances can help a team win a championship.

11) Phoenix Suns have a young player named Alan Williams who was a good very player at Cal-Santa Barbara. If any of the Suns have trouble with the law, they can call Alan up— his mom just got named police chief for the city of Phoenix.

10) Jacksonville Jaguars just fired their OC in large part because the QB had regressed. Who did they replace the OC with? the QB coach, who is in charge of making sure the QB didn’t regress. Oy.

9) Now that the Cleveland Cavaliers are champs, ever wonder what their former coach David Blatt is doing? Guy got fired last year; you have to wonder what he is doing now. Is he coaching somewhere? Did he go back overseas?

Would be interesting if Blatt went on TV, to hear what he had to say. Former coaches are usually better than former players on TV.

8) Who was the first DH in MLB history? Ron Blomberg walked with the bases loaded against Luis Tiant in Fenway Park, in April of 1973, in the first big league AB by a designated hitter.

7) Russell Westbrook is the first NBA player since at least 1983 with 40+ field goal attempts, 20+ free throws and 10+ assists in the same game. He is also the first guy since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 1975 to get a triple double with 50+ points.

6) Former Bills’ coach Mark Levy is 91; he looks great. Coach Levy was at Wrigley Field Friday night and was also there for the 1945 World Series, the last time the Cubs played in the Series, before this year.

5) Texas Longhorns haven’t had an offensive player taken in the first round of the NFL Draft since QB Vince Young, in 2006.

4) CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders closed out Taylor Field this week; lot of history there. Toronto Blue Jays actually played exhibition games in Regina in 1989 and 1993.

3) If you’ve never experienced Halloween in Las Vegas, I highly recommend it; few years ago, think it was 2012, i spent a weekend at the South Point Casino, which is a really good place, has a bowling alley, movie theater and 24-hour coffee shop as well as an excellent sports book. South Point also has an equestrian arena, so when the pro rodeo is in town, the cowboys stay there.

I had no idea there was such a thing as pro rodeo, so the first night I am there, I walk down into the casino and 95% of the people there are dressed like the cast of Blazing Saddles.

I ask the security guard if it is cowboy Halloween party and he says “No, the pro rodeo is in town.” I tell him I never heard of the pro rodeo. He looks at me and says “Where are you from?”

OK, so we don’t have rodeo in New York…….

2) So couple nights later, the rodeo is out of town and it is Saturday night and I notice a red carpet with TV cameras near the entrance. Ask the same security guard whats up.

“Oh, the fetish and fantasy ball is tonight.” he says. I give him a knowing look, not wanting to be a fool again, since I know we have fetish and fantasy here in New York but I had no idea what I was about to see.

An astounding parade of people in all kinds of costumes that were, um……revealing to say the least. I’m leaning up against a slot machine watching this in total amazement.

1) So I watch the parade for a little while then go watch the late college football games; after that I’m going up to my room for something and I get on the elevator with this couple from the fetish and fantasy ball.

He is dressed as a prison guard, handcuffs, night stick and all; she is in shackles and a neck collar, with an outfit that is torn in very strategic places. She had to be a model or a porn star, totally gorgeous and it is just the three of us on the elevator. I have zero idea what to do or say.

So I say nothing until we get to my floor and I wish them a Happy Halloween as I get off the elevator. I’m guessing they did.

Inside the Paint - Tuesday
November 1, 2016

Favorites have jumped out to a strong start this week, going 10-1 straight up since Sunday. More importantly, the ‘chalk’ produced a decent 7-4 record against the spread while the ‘under’ has gone 7-4 in the last two days as well.

Tuesday’s card offers up a solid nine-game slate and there’s a little something for everybody, including the three best teams in action.

Game of the Night – Golden State at Portland (NBATV, 10:05 p.m. ET)

The Warriors (2-1 SU, 0-3 ATS) will look to notch their first cover of the season when they meet the Trail Blazers (2-1 SU, 2-1 ATS) at the Moda Center. This pair squared off in the second round of the playoffs last summer and Golden State won the series in five games. The Warriors also took three of four from the Blazers during the regular season with the two losses both coming at Portland in the nine meetings.

Golden State’s new-look lineup with Kevin Durant hasn’t looked sharp in three games but head coach Steve Kerr made a good point. "We are not clicking," Kerr said. "Everyone can see that. It will come, but the main thing while we are going through this process is to continue to compete and try to pick up wins."

The two wins came against the winless Pelicans and Suns while the loss was a blowout to their biggest competition in the West, San Antonio. The Trail Blazers aren’t a minnow, rather a playoff team and they’re listed as home ‘dogs (+5) for tonight’s matchup. Portland has gone 1-1 at home this season and the loss came to a better opponent in the Clippers last Thursday. Including that loss, the Blazers are 9-8 SU in their last 17 games as home ‘dogs.

Golden State (26.7%) isn’t shooting well right now from 3-point land and that’s understatement when you look at its numbers from last season (41%). Even with those poor numbers, the Warriors are still averaging 109.3 points per game this season. Portland has been better offensively through three games (111.3 PPG) and tonight’s total is hovering between 227 and 228 as of Tuesday morning. The Trail Blazers have seen the ‘over’ go 3-0 while the Warriors are 2-1 to the high side this season.

The ‘over’ went 8-1 in the nine matchups last season and Portland averaged an eye opening 122.5 PPG at home versus Golden State.

Still Undefeated

After the Warriors, the Cavaliers and Spurs are the second and third betting choices to win this year’s NBA Finals and both teams have lived up to their billing as contenders so far.

Cleveland (3-0 SU, 2-1 ATS) will look to win its fourth straight game on Tuesday when Houston visits Quicken Loans Arena. The Rockets have won seven of their last eight against the Cavaliers but are listed as nine-point road underdogs in this matchup, which is set to start at 6:05 p.m. ET due to Game 6 of the World Series taking place in Cleveland tonight as well. Houston likes to push the pace but it’s seen the ‘under’ go 2-1 in its first three games and the defense actually held the Mavericks to 98 and 92 points in their last two matchups, both wins. The Houston offense will be a nice test for Cleveland, who continues to be a great defensive team (92.7 PPG). The Cavaliers went 14-4 SU (9-9 ATS) at home last season versus the Western Conference.

San Antonio (4-0 SU, 4-0 ATS) appears to be on cruise control right now and still remains unbeaten despite opening the season with three of four on the road. The defense has held three of four opponents under 100 and the oddsmakers expect that trend to continue on Tuesday. The Spurs host the Jazz as 10 ½-point favorites and the total is the lowest on the board at 187. Utah is ranked 29th in scoring offense (91.7 PPG) and that number won’t improve until forward Gordon Hayward (finger) returns from injury. The Spurs swept four games (3-1 ATS) against the Jazz last season and won three of the contests easily by double digits. These teams will meet again this Friday from Salt Lake City.

Notable Head-to-Head Trends

-- Indiana is 5-1 in its last six versus the Lakers but last three games decided by a total of seven points.

-- Orlando won and covered three of four against Philadelphia last season, averaging 119.7 PPG in the victories.

-- The Knicks and Pistons have seen the ‘over’ cash in four of their last five. The previous two games played at the Palace saw a combined 236 and 216 points scored between the pair.

-- Miami has won four straight (2-2 ATS) and nine of its last 10 meetings against Sacramento. The ‘over’ has gone 9-1 during this span.

-- The Grizzlies and Timberwolves have seen the ‘over’ cash in eight of the last 10 and six straight encounters.

-- New Orleans has won eight of its last 10 meetings against Milwaukee,

Looking for Wins

The first week of the season is in the books and we have seven winless teams, with four of them playing on Tuesday. Two of those teams will be squaring off against one another while the oddsmakers have the other pair favored in their games.

Orlando (0-3 SU, 1-2 ATS) visits Philadelphia (0-2 SU, 1-1 ATS) and the Magic have been installed as five-point road favorites while the total opened 197 ½ and jumped to 199 at a few shops. I’m a little surprised the total moved up considering the poor offensive production we’ve seen from both teams thus far. The Magic (92.3 PPG) are ranked 28th in scoring while the 76ers (84.5 PPG) are last in the league. When it comes to field goal percentage, Philadelphia ranks last (39%) in that category as well and Orlando barely sits above them in 29th position (39.3%). As noted in the trends, the Magic have been better in this series recently but hard to put stock into either of these squads right now.

Minnesota (0-2 SU, 0-2 ATS) entered the season with a lot of hype from pundits and the oddsmakers. The Timberwolves have actually played well enough to win both of their first two games but they’ve been outscored by 14 and 13 points in the second-half of those losses. The Wolves host the Grizzlies on Wednesday as 5 ½-point favorites and one of those aforementioned setbacks came to Memphis, a 102-98 loss last Tuesday on the road. Minnesota has a lot of nice parts but they lack a true outside threat under new head coach Tom Thibodeau and scoring points was a big during his tenure in Chicago.

New Orleans (0-3 SU, 1-2 ATS) has one of the best players in Anthony Davis but the remaining parts are below average and they’re very weak offensively (98.3 PPG, 42.1%), especially from 3-point land where they rank last in shooting (19%). Losses to the Spurs and Warriors were expected, plus the setback to the Nuggets in their home opener doesn’t look like a surprise now. New Orleans is a short favorite (-3) tonight and the better lean might be the ‘under’ considering the Bucks have scoring issues (98.3 PPG) of their own as well.

Back-to-Back

Sacramento (2-2 SU, 2-2 ATS) played at Atlanta on Monday and dropped a 106-95 decision as a seven-point road underdog. Fast forward to Tuesday and the Kings will visit the Miami Heat, who opened as a 3 ½-point home favorite. The Kings struggled on no rest last season with a 4-15 record but they were competitive at the betting counter with a 10-8-1 ATS mark. The club already faced one back-to-back situation this season and they lost at home last Thursday to San Antonio 102-94.

CLEVELAND (AP) Kyrie Irving scored a season-high 32 points and the reigning NBA champion Cleveland Cavaliers remained undefeated, beating the Houston Rockets 128-120 on Tuesday night.

Kevin Love scored 24 points while LeBron James added 19 points and 13 rebounds as Cleveland placed six players in double figures. The Cavaliers are 4-0 for the first time in 16 years.

James Harden scored a season-high 41 points and had 15 assists for Houston.

Ryan Anderson's 3-pointer cut Cleveland's lead to 114-112 with 2:18 to play, but 3-pointers by James and J.R. Smith and another 3 by Irving with 34 seconds left pushed the margin to 125-116.

The game's tip-off was moved up an hour to 6 p.m. because the Indians and Cubs were playing Game 6 of the World Series across the street at Progressive Field.

JAZZ 106, SPURS 91

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - George Hill had 22 points and Utah made a season-high 15 3-pointers, handing San Antonio its first loss of the season.

Rodney Hood had 19 points, Trey Lyles 15 and Shelvin Mack 14 for Utah, which finished 15 for 31 from 3-point range.

Kawhi Leonard led San Antonio with 30 points and LaMarcus Aldridge added 21.

Hill made four straight baskets starting with about 6 minutes left, scoring 10 points to give the Jazz a 96-88 lead with 4 minutes remaining.

Utah built a 12-point lead in the opening quarter by shooting 72 percent from the field and 88 percent on 3s.

The Jazz made seven 3-pointers in the first quarter, one more than their previous season high for a game.

HEAT 108, KINGS 96

MIAMI (AP) - Goran Dragic scored 25 points, Tyler Johnson had seven of his 22 in overtime and Miami beat Sacramento.

Hassan Whiteside got his fourth double-double to start the season, 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Heat - who have won 15 straight at home over the Kings. Dragic added eight rebounds and eight assists, and Dion Waiters scored 20 points for Miami.

Rudy Gay scored 30 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Sacramento. DeMarcus Cousins scored 30 points for the Kings, but fouled out late in regulation and Sacramento was outscored 17-5 in the extra session.

The Heat wasted an 80-71 lead in the final six minutes of regulation.

PISTONS 102, KNICKS 89

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) - Tobias Harris scored 25 points and Marcus Morris added 22 to lift Detroit over New York.

The Pistons have won three in a row - all by double digits - since dropping their season opener. They closed out this game with an impressive defensive stretch, holding New York to 10 points in the fourth quarter.

Carmelo Anthony scored 24 points for the Knicks, and Derrick Rose added 19.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 19 points for Detroit, and Andre Drummond had nine points and 13 rebounds.

MAGIC 103, 76ERS 101

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Serge Ibaka sank two free throws with 1.4 seconds to snap a tie game and send Orlando over Philadelphia.

The Magic rallied from an 18-point deficit to win for the first time in four games this season.

Sixers center Joel Embiid lost his dribble at the top of the key and Orlando snagged the ball with 5.7 seconds left. Sixers guard T.J. McConnell was whistled for a flagrant foul on Ibaka's layup attempt. Ibaka made both and the Magic retained possession and kept the Sixers winless.

Embiid had two costly turnovers in the final minute for the Sixers.

Ibaka scored 21 points and Nik Vucevic had 24 points and 14 rebounds.

Hollis Thompson led the Sixers with 22 points. Embiid had 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Dario Saric scored 21 points.

BUCKS 117, PELICANS 113

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Giannis Antetokounmpo had 24 points and 10 rebounds, Jabari Parker added 21 points, and Milwaukee beat winless New Orleans.

Anthony Davis scored 35 points - the third time he has scored at least that many points - to go with 15 rebounds, three blocked shots and three steals. But once again, it was not enough for New Orleans, which has dropped its first four games, including three at home.

Milwaukee rookie Malcolm Brogdon had his best game yet, scoring 14 points - 10 in the second half. Tony Snell had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Bucks, while Rashad Vaughn scored 12 points and Matthew Dellavedova had 11.

Tim Frazier had 20 points and nine assists for New Orleans.

TIMBERWOLVES 116, GRIZZLIES 80

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Zach LaVine scored 31 points and hit five 3-pointers, and Minnesota built a lead too big to give away in a victory over Memphis, its first of the season.

Gorgui Dieng scored 17 points for the Timberwolves (1-2), who led by 17 points in the opener against Memphis and 18 against Sacramento before losing both games.

Memphis coach David Fizdale decided to rest Mike Conley and Marc Gasol on the front end of a back-to-back that finishes at home on Wednesday night against New Orleans. Tony Allen made his season debut for the Grizzlies after missing the first three games of the season with a right knee injury.

Memphis shot just 36.5 percent and turned the ball over 22 times.

WARRIORS 127, TRAIL BLAZERS 104

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Stephen Curry scored 28 points, 23 in the third quarter, and Golden State extended its early season winning streak to three games.

Ian Clark came off the bench with a career-high 22 points for the Warriors, who have rebounded after a season-opening loss to San Antonio. Kevin Durant added 20 points and Golden State rested its starters down the stretch after leading by as many as 35 points.

Damian Lillard had 31 points for the Blazers, who fell in five games to the Warriors in the Western Conference semifinals last season. Playing the first of a back-to-back, Portland coach Terry Stotts also went to his reserves with eight minutes left.

PACERS 115, LAKERS 108

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Paul George scored 30 points, including Indiana's final 12 of the game to rally the Pacers over Los Angeles.

The Lakers trailed by as many as 16 points, but rallied and had their final lead at 108-107 before George put it away.

He made consecutive 18-foot jumpers for a 111-108 lead, then followed through on the opposite end of the floor with the biggest defensive rebound of the game. The Lakers' Jordan Clarkson missed an almost uncontested layup, and it was George who came down with the rebound, sending him to the free throw line to close out the contest.

Monta Ellis had 17 points and CJ Miles scored 16 for the Pacers. Thaddeus Young finished with 14.

Lou Williams scored 19 points for the Lakers and Clarkson had 15.

Wednesday’s six-pack

— Cubs 9, Indians 3– Game 7 is tonight in Cleveland.

— November 21 Texans-Raiders Monday night game is being played in Mexico City.

— Raiders don’t play another true road game until December 8 in KC; they finish with three road games in last four weeks, all division games.

— Patriots got a 3rd-round draft pick from Cleveland for LB Jaime Collins.

— Chicago Bulls are 3-0 for the first time in 20 years.

— Oklahoma City Thunder gave Victor Oladipo $84M for four years.

Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

13) Steelers-Ravens play in Baltimore Sunday, with both teams off a bye week; wouldn’t it have made sense for this to be the Thursday night game this week? Football wasn’t meant to be played on three days’ rest.

12) Chicago Bears are the only NFL team that does not have a defensive player who has ever played in a Pro Bowl.

11) Bears’ offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains went to college at Arkansas, where he held for kicks for four years and learned football from coach Houston Nutt.

Loggains could’ve gone to a smaller school and played QB, but he thought he wanted to be a coach and chose to learn from Nutt, who was a very good coach before going on TV.

10) ESPN fantasy sports guru Matthew Berry was once a writer for the TV show Married with Children.

9) Dolphins are favored over the Jets this week; this is only 2nd time in last 12 years that Miami is favored in its post-bye game. Overall, Dolphins are 6-12 in their last 18 post-bye games.

8) There is a TV show on the History Channel called American Pickers, where two guys drive around in a van and try to buy collectible stuff from older people who live in mostly rural areas.

Why older people? Because they want to find people who are just looking to get rid of stuff, preferably for less money. Sometimes you get mad at the two guys, especially Frank, who thinks he is smarter than everyone else, but that is part of the business of making money, I guess.

The guys own two shops where they re-sell the stuff for a profit. It is oddly entertaining and worth watching.

7) In three of last five seasons, Dwight Howard has made less than half his foul shots; he is off to an 11-24 start this year, after his 8-20 game against the Kings Monday.

Howard makes $23M a year, has already banked $167M in salary in his career. How can I be a better free throw shooter than he is?

6) Clippers TV announcer Ralph Lawler is joy to listen to; always watch as many Clipper games as I can. Clippers were so bad for so long and now they’re good, so you’re happy for him. Lawler is enthusiastic and you can tell he is a real basketball fan.

5) Oklahoma City traded Ersan Ilyasova to Philly Tuesday, after he played only 62 minutes in three games for the Thunder- they acquired him as part of the Serge Ibaka deal.

This means when he plays for the Sixers, it’ll be the 5th team Ilyasova has played for in his last 79 games, going from the Bucks to Detroit to Orlando to the Thunder to Philadelphia.

On one hand, teams want you enough to trade for you; on the other hand, once they have you, then don’t mind getting rid of you.

4) Good news for NC State’s basketball team; freshman 7-footer Omer Yurtseven will be able to play for the Wolfpack this year— he becomes eligible December 15, enough time to get in a few games before ACC play starts.

Yurtseven is a 5-star level recruit, a huge get for Mark Gottfried.

3) There is a story going around that Nick Saban was interested in the Giants’ coaching job last January, and that the team almost hired him. Somehow, comedian Tom Arnold is involved with spreading this story, which makes it a little weirder.

You get the feeling Saban has one more coaching stop in him and it will be an NFL job— he has nothing left to prove in college.

2) Mets closer Jeurys Familia got arrested in New Jersey on domestic violence charges, which is bad news for Mets, seeing as Jose Reyes got suspended 52 games LY for a similar offense.

Aroldis Chapman got a 30-game suspension this year and he was never arrested for his offense.

1— Obscure Fact of the Day: Eddie Johnson played 17 years in the NBA, scored 19,202 points; he holds the record for most points scored in the NBA, without ever making an All-Star team.

Jamal Crawford has a good chance to break that record; he has scored 17,117 points; he is 36, looks like he would have to play two more years at his current pace to set the new record.
