Briggs is choosing the route of career suicide, but hey at least he will get paid. What Briggs will slowly begin to understand is that he is a cover 2 outside LB. He is one of the best LB's in the league in that package. Briggs problem is that he is not a great blitzer, and don't get me wrong I think this guy is a star, but blitzing is a key to most OLB schemes in the NFL just not the Bears.
As Briggs is preparing to leave Chicago I want him to understand one thing, it was not a burden to be playing in the shadow of Brian Urlacher it was a blessing. These arrogant and cocky athletes need to understand that having to live up to the expectations of a guy like Urlacher blows. Brian year in and year out faces scrutiny from media and other people when his team loses.
Welcome to Washington Lance Briggs, you are committing career suicide. You are going to a place with a losing tradition that has busts come in every year. You are going to a place that has a play book with thousands of plays that are not made to suit your strengths.
You were a star in Chicago, you were liked and you got offered 7 years at 33 Million dollars, 25 that was g'teed to play football in a city that liked you. You would have gotten to play along side one of the all time greats, and be apart of a defense that was only going to get better. Although the franchise tag is a piece of shit, and understandably so, Shaun Alexander and Walter Jones didn't sit out. They played through it, that is the way the game works. I am all for backing up NFL players because I think the contracts in the NFL are an absolute joke. But you were getting 7.15 million dollars to play football this year. And they would have franchised you again next year like assholes, but Briggs if you think you are going to get hurt then you should have taken the 7 year 33 million dollar deal. If you aren't going to get hurt then you would have gotten 17+ million dollars in two years, making you more highly paid then BU.
I will never understand why athletes feel the need to get out of the shadow of all time greats. Scottie Pippen became an all time great playing in Jordan's shadow. Hell Kobe you would have 6 rings by now if you didn't want to be selfish. This game is about winning and people will remember how great you were if you win.
I also will never understand the lack of loyalty in sports. The Bears drafted Briggs in the 3rd round and gave him a starting job in the NFL. Briggs got passed up at least twice by every other team in the NFL and the Bears gave you your shot. How do you thank them, by demanding more then 5 million dollars a year for 7 years.
If you are loyal and patient you will get paid man, when are athletes going to learn this? Some organization may have a bad track record, but the Bears paid Urlacher, they paid Mike Brown, they paid Olin Kreutz.
I understand this is a business and people are trying to make money. But you were talking about taking out loans and sitting out? If this is truly a business decision don't you think this would maybe be a bad idea? Take your money play the year out and then see what happens. Most people would die for your job, and no one was really willing to give you a job when you were drafted, oh yeah the Chicago Bears were.
So Bye Lance Briggs and enjoy the Skins, but you will not be in the spotlight there, because there is no spotlight in Washington. You will just be another Lavar Arrington has been, that couldn't figure out how to win in Washington.
