Is Beane still looking smart?

Harden is the best pitcher in baseball when he's on the mound and healthy. After a couple more starts he'll have enough innings to qualify on the stats board and he'll have the best ERA by a lot. 2.04 combined; 1.50 as a Cub.

Yes, Beane is still looking smart. He doesn't give a shit about this year and he got himself a kid that will be an ace in the future. Gallagher has struggled lately because he has a hurt shoulder and will probably go on the DL very soon. Not saying the trade didn't work out great for the Cubs because they are playing for this year and they are legit contenders and probably have the best 1-2-3 punch with Harden, Z and Dempster.

The trade will work out well for both teams. Beane knew his team couldn't win this year and was still a few years away, so he sold his guy for optimum value. He's the best in the business. This team will win a World Series because of him by 2015. It might seem far away, but he's thinking about the future and specifically being a contender for when they get the new ballpark.

A's knew how great Harden could be... they also knew how often he killed their season by always being injured. One good season does not a smart move make.

It does for the Cubs if he helps them play deep into October.

Is Harden signed for next year as well, if so Beane is an Ass as he could have gotten a real prospect for Harden next year as opposed to a somewhat ok one in Gallagher

Smart move for them, but not for the A's who have such a low budget that an injury to their top pitcher can cripple them. I like the move for both teams.

My understanding is that the Cubs hold a team-only option for next season for a mere $7 million. Unless his arm falls off they will obviously pick that up and it is a steal, or they may leverage that into a long-term deal of some sort.

I'm not trying to hammer on Beane here. presumably he got the best value he thought he could and maybe Gallagher will eventually be good. But in any case obviously it was a tremendous deal from the Cubs standpoint and one that if the Cubs hadn't done may have regretted forever.

Harden has given up 2+ runs once. Scary.

Cubs to have a major decision in setting their playoff rotation. I start Dempster, Z, Harden, Lilly in that order. Dempster must start at home and you have Harden for a Game 7.

They could trade Gaudin back to the A's for Gallagher if they want to :nohead:

I think they will set up with Z in Game 1. Dempster has been more consistent, but Z is still considered the "ace". So it would be Z, Demp, Harden, Lilly in that order so that Dempster would pitch at home.

BTW, it was nice meeting you FW. :toast:

How many world series is Beane at now?

The guy can only do so much. He produces winning clubs nearly every year with no revenue. The guy isn't the manager though...

You too.

Heard Z's fastball is down to 90-91. Stone was mentioning it on The Score today. Can't take the Reds vs him, but there will be spots I suspect to fade him.
