Is Vancouver too expensive to retire in? Visited there many years ago and it's a beautiful city with lots to do if you're into nature. I can see being bored if you're in your 20s but 60s would be perfect. Wouldn't mind retiring there myself.

housing is very expensive, off the charts

beautiful province. Brother-in-law left Ontario for BC on a work project. And decided he aint coming back :)

Yes, i have been seriously considering spending some time there. Was looking at retirement requirements the other day. I read somewhere that for over 50 year olds a 800 USD pension & 10K deposited in a bank there qualifies one to live in the country. An additional annual fee is required, $360. And you can't touch the 10K unless you decide to quit living there. Though it can be invested in a residence, etc. Quite a bit easier than retiring to Thailand, i think.

You need 25000 in the bank, health insurance, and a passport for a senior visa to retire here....not as easy as it was ten years ago....not easy but you can get around the 25K in the bank...must have a Thai bank account

In many ways Philippines is Thailand with less of a language barrier and not as many lady boys.

Phillipines is high on my list.. Spent a couple weeks there 2 years ago.. It was great. Money goes a long way there too..alot of beautiful areas out there to settle in..

Yup.

Low cost of living. Where they live it is very upscale. Pf course they probably are living there since Costa Rica does not extradite.

"What countries will not extradite?

Countries with no extradition treaty with US

  • African Republic, Chad, Mainland China, Comoros, Congo (Kinshasa), Congo (Brazzaville), Djibouti, Equatorial.
  • Mauritania, Micronesia, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nepal,
  • Niger, Oman, Qatar, Russia, Rwanda, Samoa, São Tomé & Príncipe, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Serbia,"

"I first worked in Philippines around 10 years ago, and many countries since then. After living in US all my life when I first arrived there I did not go out, I figured what's the point Friends were like dude you got to get out as a white western guy you will be very popular. Jesus. They weren't kidding. I was confused as nothing at home I would consider as a guy over 50 would speak to me, I tried!!When trying it was like Ewwww. How old are you? In other words I couldn't get laid in a women prison with a handful of pardons."

"Asia was a welcoming surprise. It seemed all of a sudden I was Tom Cruise. Needless to say my past 10 years have been very enjoyable and my plan is to retire there. The US is a great country but for women it sucks. A man over 50 unless he is a gallizonaire can basically forget about anything under 30. Looks, well I'm not fat all my hair and 6' tall, average I guess. I'm praying this is over soon so as to get out of here. Many a friend here my age alone and miserable. I've tried to get them to visit but they just don't believe me. If they only knew."

Good post & accurate info. Believe me, I know. So does Viejo. I expect Viejo also knows what mia noi & jai dee mean.

I visited the PI last February when I went to sharky99's wedding there. I've been to Thailand half a dozen times as well.

I have to say I prefer the PI. The people are much friendlier there and as someone else mentioned previously, there isn't the language barrier there. People complain about the food but I love Filipino food. It's not as good as Thai food but it's not far off.

I'm considering retiring there and am no longer considering Thailand. I still hold out the notion for Cambodia or Vietnam as well but I have yet to visit those 2 countries.

Way more crime in PI than Thailand...I would definitely consider Cambodia or Viet Nam if I ever decided to leave Thailand....

Cambodia, PI & Vietnam are on my radar as possible places to spend some time while in SEA.

Also Malaysia, Singapore & LOS.

I've been to 4 of those, but only the airport in Phnom Penh (Visa run).

Spent a couple months in Hanoi. Much more in SG & LOS.

Singapore is one of the most expensive places to live on the planet. Not much to do there either unless you know someone.

Pumping a young Thai woman for 3 hours can be a good workout, as your sweat drops fall off of your face onto hers.

This thread hasn't been commented in for 2 months and this is what you bump it with?

What the mother fucking shit is wrong with you?
