they say horses are creatures of habit, maybe this nasal strip may be a problem if iha is used to having it,i wish a trainer could add into this and tell us what it really does to the horse.

kbrod,

I don't know what it does exactly.... but from what I read, it allows a better airflow, and thus would allow more air into the lungs etc...etc...etc.....

If a horse is a creature of habit as you say, then IHA is going to need that extra air flow and what is going to happen to him, when he doesn't get it ?

I don't know, maybe I'm blowing this way out of proportion, but it just smells......... if you know what I mean..... I could see all of the experts afterwards saying, " well I guess he missed that nasal strip.."

Looking forward to your plays...........be well................ live, love, laugh....

nasal strips...this is clearly something to be concerned about.

strips support the nasal passages of the horse during exercise, improving the horse’s airflow when it needs oxygen most. By reducing airway resistance resulting from physical exertion, the strips help promote peak performance and prevents injury to the lungs.

Unlike humans, horses cannot breathe through their mouths. As a result, all horses experience some level of nasal tissue collapse during physical exercise. This partial “collapse” reduces the size of the airway, forcing the horse to work harder to breathe. Clinical studies, conducted in both private and university settings, found that strips mechanically stabilize the size of the nasal passage opening, allowing oxygen to flow freely.
Strips support nasal passages and maintain the airway during training or strenuous workouts.

Healthy horses perform better. Most horses bleed when working hard, the irritating effect of blood in the airways will be reduced by strips and the horse’s lungs will stay healthier. In addition, strips reduce the energy required to take in oxygen. By reducing the amount of energy a horse spends just to get enough oxygen, strips enable horses to expend more energy on the task at hand. Strips can also increase a horse’s stamina, allowing him to perform at full strength for longer periods of time, without becoming fatigued. Horses wearing FLAIR Strips use five to eight percent less energy at high speed and during recovery. Riders and trainers notice their horses are more relaxed, look fresher and catch their breath faster when wearing a strip.

One thing to note....lots of people want to discount Union Rags because of the Derby run. IMO, the Derby Run proves to me that he may win this race (and will be the horse I am betting) Look at the trip he has, the amount of times he has to pull up, and then his closing run. Granted he was still well behind but if that horse had been sitting in stalking position (5-9) in the Derby, he looks to me as if he would have stomped the field. I see his Derby run as one of the worst trips any horse has ever had yet he was storming at the end after exerting so much effort.

Union Rags - Winner

IHA/Dullahan for 2nd/3rd - All chalk in this race

save your money..Union Rags wont get the distance, union rags is sired by Dixie Union and I wouldn't trust a colt bred by Dixie Union to win going a marathon distance.. No way..

I think IHA wins the triple crown and I'm happy that the connections have mentioned that they wont retire him if he's injury free.

Something to think about...

Most offshore books have I'll Have Another to WIN the Belmont at +125
Most offshore books have I'll Have Another to LOSE the Belmont at -160.

If you love I'll Have Another $1,000 will get you $1,250.
And, if you like the field $1,600 will get you $1,000.

The field is looking like the play at this point. No tickets to crunch-just a 50/50 shot.

...Just something to think about.

you certainly dont want -160 odds when betting a 50/50 shot.. -160 break even is 61.5%

heynow,

now that's what I am talking about...........BINGO..................... I really think that this small equipment change is going to affect IHA in a big way.................... when Mario asks him to go, and the air ( juice ) is not there............let's see how IHA reacts.......................

just think it is an issue because this is a horse who has always used these strips,.... wouldn't care much if he only had used them once or twice, but he has always had one on in every one of his races...............

thanks for the great comments.....much appreciated...

Especially in a grueling race like the Belmont. Maybe it won't matter but the strips clearly help with performance

Its really looking like a cold deck exacta of IHA to Dullahan.. Union Rags wont be in the exacta..

This race kind of reminds me of the 98 Belmont with Real Quiet and Victory Gallop.. Although that day I liked VG more, this time I like IHA more.. IHA could win big, he can easily get this distance, jockey seems like a sharp kid. Wont move early or do make any dick moves like recent previous jockeys (antley (1999), Elliott (2004), Borel (2009)

pretty crazy you brought that up..was thinking about this race this morning...i'm having a tough time seeing this colt lose, but the local railbird in me tells me this triple crown aint happening....you just can't show up as a jockey here the day before or day of and expect to master 'big sandy'...i see he is named to 5 mounts on fri..2 of which are on the lawn which, by this week so far and the week ahead will get rained off the lawn, hence possibly scratching him out of 2 less races...i am not impressed w/this crop other than bode an dullahan....fer the sake of the game i hope iha wins but the pessimist in me says-uh-uh...cheers...ps, the tractors are out now sealing the track, it's raining again!!!
