Behind the NFL’s sinking ratings: Have we reached ‘peak football?’

While Major League Baseball is enjoying one of the most exciting postseasons in its recent history, the National Football League is losing viewers. So low are this season’s ratings that television networks are being forced to give away free ad slots to make up for the low numbers.

Speculation about the reason is rampant: the election, the protests. Whatever the explanation, the smart folks at NFL headquarters seem to think the solution is to keep their heads down and hope things get better. But it’s tough to fix the problem if we don’t know what’s wrong.

The consensus view seems to be that blame rests with the enormous interest in the presidential campaign. Viewers are too distracted to pay attention to football.
Maybe so. On the other hand, as Peter King of Sports Illustrated has pointed out, although the pendency of an election always hurts the NFL’s numbers, the effect has never been as pronounced as it is this year. Ratings are down some 13.4 percent, far more than the usual election-year drop-off.

So there’s at least a fair likelihood that the full explanation lies elsewhere.

Lots of commentators blame ratings on what has come to be known as the “Kaepernick effect”: a negative reaction to the protests against racial inequality by San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and others during the national anthem. One-third of those surveyed by Rasmussen said the protests make them less likely to watch the games.

Nevertheless, I remain skeptical that the Kaepernick effect is very large, and I would not be surprised to see it dissipate as the season progresses.
Whatever the cause of the ratings decline, the league could do itself a considerable favor by not making things worse. With its usual sure instinct for aiming carefully at its own foot, the NFL just last week ordered teams not to post video to social media during games.

Previously, if you followed your favorite team, and your team made a big play, up it would come on your feed. No more. Now only the NFL’s own Twitter and Facebook accounts can carry video snippets of events as they unfold. Fines for violations begin at $25,000.

The rationale for this bizarre prohibition is unclear. It’s unlikely that the NFL’s broadcast partners are complaining; nobody watches a football game by waiting for a team to tweet the occasional GIF.

The other obvious theory is that the NFL is trying to drive traffic to its own Twitter and Facebook feeds, which remain free to post video as games unfold.
For those of us who love the sport, the grimmer explanation for the drop in ratings is that we have passed peak football.

Four years ago, economists Kevin Grier and Tyler Cowen sketched out what the end of the NFL’s dominance might look like. They proposed a “slow death march” as parents worried about concussions and chronic traumatic encephalopathy keep their sons away from the game, high schools gradually drop it and what was once the most popular sport in the nation becomes a regional phenomenon.

Well, guess what? The percentage of boys playing high school football is declining. (Participation in other sports is declining, too, but participation in football is declining faster.)

One group of parents in particular is sufficiently worried to keep its children away from the sport: college-educated Democratic voters. For the rest of the population, football remains as popular as ever. In fact, even as high-school participation rates have fallen in blue states, they have risen steadily in red states. The notorious partisan divide over football has a basis in fact.

None of this means that the forecast by Grier and Cowen will come to pass, at least in the short run. If the election really is to blame for the NFL’s ratings, then viewership should recover in a few weeks (assuming the league stops shooting itself in the foot).

And if the true story turns out to be the Kaepernick effect, I suspect the slump will also be transitory, and ratings will also pick up as the season goes on (with the same caveat).

If, on the other hand, the ratings decline marks the beginning of a downward spiral, let’s all give thanks that the rest of television is enjoying its golden age.

NFL Cutting Off team's ability to interact with their fans by posting up Plays is really pathetic.

So much energy invested in trying to get fans to hit up the Social Media of teams, then Roger brings this.

The Concussion fears too though, seriously these have to be a driving force behind declining viewership.

This is an easy answer,,, the JOKE,, is that the NFL wants to find a way to a DIFFERENT ANSWER... hahhaha

Americans dont give a FUK!!! about concussions,, the answer is,,,, Partially Kapernik,,, and partially Commercials,,, and yes, the catch rule blows too, but thats not the issue.

I find it HALARIOUS, when people say,,, ESPN is going under because of competition,, thats fkn just not true,,, its going under for the same reason the NFL is going under,,, its getting politically correct, and too godam many commercials,,

NFL doesnt want that to be the answer, so they will look till they can blame it on something else,, like the election,, GOOD THING that ends NOV 8th,, so MAGICALLY we can all START watching football on NOV 9th?? fkn retards!,,

Americans want a RELEASE from all the Drama,,, and football isnt it,, Most of us arent *ags, and we want to grab women by the *ussy, and kiss them, and most women want that too, (god help us if a women admits to it though)

if UFC wanted to put a choke hold ont he nfl, they would have fights be Thurs nights, and Monday nights, and have the whole thing be BEER commercials, and politically incorrectness, and guy time,, that shit would BLOW UP!! (your welcome UFC) you can mail my check to phoenix.

I think the Length of games is part of the issue, these game go on and on, the commercial dollar is driving this game and people have better things to do than sit there and watch 3 1/2 to 4 hours of football.

This is a Great Point and one not really mentioned in discussions about why NFL Ratings are down: Flags.

And terrible Non-Calls too. Flags etc. that led to Bad Beats, specifically. Many Instances, Many.....recall Green Bay vs. Seattle...

that Monday Night Game.....Dallas with Dez's "Non-Catch" which, I saw it again just the other night and I swear it appeared that by the letter of the law that calling that an incompletion looked to be the correct call. Looked for the world like the tip of the ball touched the ground.

bukis makes good point tho, IMO.....Officiating a reason also that ratings are down. More Talk now than ever online about games being "fixed".

One group of parents in particular is sufficiently worried to keep its children away from the sport: college-educated Democratic voters.

Football was something fans could partake in where a man could be a man without being judged for it .. he can get excited about the violence (they removed the violence), he can get excited about the cheerleaders and girls in the beer commercials (Now we get Clydesdale horses), he can get excited about drinking and being stupid (Now normal male to male conversation disqualifies someone from being President) ......

When you completely emasculate a society, football is going to suffer. There are less men to enjoy it and those men don't want to be preached to about how bad they are by other people.

Want a great example of how bad it has become?

I was watching "First Take" with Stephen A Smith and Max Kellerman the other day .. the topic and the message at the bottom of the screen said "Is Tom Brady getting a free pass for support of Trump" or something like that. You want me to watch NFL when you are calling me a bigot? Fuck you.

Wow. Very well said.

I won't go off yet again on My Rant about how bad it is to have the commercials feature as many completely Feminine "Guys" in them as they do but for me it is just Sickening to see. Literally Sickening. To have not just so many commercials but such a large percentage of those starring males that are more Woman-Like than they are man.

Think it has more to do with cutting cords and expanded available viewing options and less about length of time, commercials, and much lesser anything related to the protests.

You make a very good point as well. Guys used to be able to tune in and watch a football game. Now they have to endure a Dog & Pony Show of Social Consciousness, Political Correctness, Fag-laden ads made by Liberals to enforce their agenda, Beyonce at halftime demonstrating how huge a Stupidc**t she is, Millionaires pretending they care about Poor Black People by kneeling when what they really hope to accomplish by this is Self-Promotion and to appeal to their GFs plus the music selected to promote games/that gets played around these is horrific.

You really hit on something here, IMO. It would be nice to be able to return to that time when we were able to just watch a football game.

Does the NFL even realize that it's main fanbase are conservative males that don't want to hear all that PC bullshit and just want to watch football?

ESPN and their liberal bias on everything. That whole Michael Sam thing made me sick. How many times did they show him kiss his little fag friend?

I agree with others. The commercials now always show weak feminized males.

Does anyone remember what year those "and twins" beer commercials ran? They would never show something like that now.

Also, I hate the randomness of when there are commercials. Timeout, go to commercial. Replay review, go to commercial. Guy gets injured, go to commercial. The flow of the game has been lost by the NFL's greed for more ad money.

Excellent Post, Sun Dodger. :toast:

For some reason my "Quote" button that makes possible Quoting your post has vanished.

So I gotta improvise here but worth it cuz I've never seen it stately as accurately as you did there. And in particular, a thing I have seriously been completely confused about TOTALLY for a long while now which is:

Does the NFL even realize that it's main fanbase are conservative males that don't want to hear all that PC bullshit and just want to watch football?

Thats a seriously valid question.

I feel more sure, 100% Positive, than I have ever felt about anything that the constant Barrage of GirlyMen, Beta Males and straight out Flamboyantly Gay dudes on the too many commercials is a MAJOR contributor to decline in viewership.

I mean, and I appreciate that it is not "politically correct" to say this but...

What Reason, what Rationale EXISTS for WHY the Crime of liking Football deserves to be PUNISHED by making guys have to endure a Parade of totally effeminate males whoring themselves out to advertise Burger King, Sonic, Toyota and Sprint Cellular, Apple IPhones and various Insurance companies?

Its literally this: If You watch Football then you are a Barbarian. In the eyes of those who produce TV Commercials which are, today, decidedly NOT the type of people that we saw in "Ad Men".

Today the commercials get made by Gay People, overwhelmingly, and Liberal Left Morons.

Straight Up, Sun Dodger....the reason the content we see in the ads is what it is is to accomplishment Punishment of a "type" of person that Gays & Liberals despise, what Hillary considers to be "deplorables"

and to show us Who is really In Control.

In This Country, Sun Dodger.

The Gays & Libs producing the TV Ads are using these as a Pulpit from which to Punish, Proseltyze and Promote.

Not whatever product they are hawking but the message that having no idea whatsoever if you are a boy or a girl is not a bad thing.

Cuz that don't Matter. All that does matter is...

WhatEVER your Personal Mutation, its OK. Whatever your Personal Brain Malfunction that has caused you to be so Weak.....its OK

cuz there are others like you. And they have POWER.

Thing is though......the Mutants they try to relay this message to, by casting the type of people that they do, within the ads...

....these Mutants are not tuned into FOOTBALL.

So what we see within the ads is MOSTLY about Punishing us Deplorables.

Savage Stupid Worthless barbarians who like.....Football.

I've been saying for some time, soccer will be filling the void. As much as I hate soccer I do recognize it's popularity is growing.
