as soon as they came to the conclusion that he wouldn't be able to use that hind leg to natuarally breed they had to put him down.

I think that everyone involved knew from the onset that bearing weight in a dis/mounting position would be impossible. No one would have fooled themselves to think otherwise.

"In a case such as Barbaro's, his medical team would plan and monitor physical therapy with breeding in mind," she said. "Amazing things have been done to accommodate disabled breeding stallions, from custom-built breeding ramps to supportive splints or casts, to medications that reduce the amount of effort required. But in most cases, simple old-fashioned careful attention to detail, such as highly skilled stallion and mare handlers who can allow the stallion to compensate for his limitations, good athletic surfaces, and a breeding schedule customized to the stallion's fitness and fertility, can help sports injured stallions enjoy remarkably normal and successful breeding careers."

New Bolton reported that it has been among the leaders in developing methods of assisting aging and disabled stallions to breed.

anyone know how much coin barboro made for his owner??

Barbaro had earnings of $2,203,200. Minus monies for training, rearing, breeding, medical, trainer/jockey cuts you're looking at something closer to $1m profit.

I'd expect New Bolton to report just that. If you saw the costs of their bills, it would need to be justified somehow.

The kinds of injuries they have seen in the past were nowhere near what Barbaro sustained when trying to build contingency plans for breeding.

If the horse was insured they would have had to do everything possible to keep the horse alive. Don't think greed had that much to do with it.

Very SAd. I believe the owners loved this horse. Their decisions were from the heart. RIP

This should have happened the DAY he broke that leg, stupid owners looking to score as much cash out of this animal as possible...only eneded up causing it more misery!

This is not the 1960's.....This horse had a shot, the Vets tried their asses off. This horse truly showed that miracles can happen, if you do not try, you will not know. If that horse could talk, do you think he would say, FUCK THIS put me down? Hell No, he battled like a warrior nad never gave up.

i care about animals...most anyways..in fact i probably have more compasion for ANIMALS than i do people...ill slam on the breaks to avoid hitting a squirrel for christs sake...i didnt even want to click the link on the yahoo page...when i did i couldnt read the entire thing, i just skimmed over it...

the owners of the horse said they wanted him alive even if he could never breed they just wanted him to live a comfortable life on the farm....this was definitely not about money imo....

sad day indeed....

All the talk about not being able to breed because of his leg, I heard in about 20 more years science will actually make it possible to extract the DNA(what's that?) from an animal or human being and actually place it inside a female egg. I forget what the procedure would be called.

Certainly can sympathize with this as I also had an horse I own put down this weekend.
It was the first time for me, so I have a greater understanding.

Those with immature comments certainly have not owned a horse before, and I only wish you could step in their shoes and change your perspective for a minute.

I do. Animals are pure in spirit and live without sin, unlike humans. But I won't be boycotting Outback anytime some either...

apples and bowling balls...It's not the point I'm trying to make. Let's not mock his death. I understand a lot animals are killed everyday, and it saddens me to no end. I try to do my part for animals everyday. No, I'm not a life long vegan. But let's have some respect for a courageous champion.

I would expect that after medical, the family probably lost between $1-10million on this horse. I dont know if Penn was donating the care, but if they were not, keeping this horse alive was not a financial decision.
