On a day in and day out basis, do you see any benefit of giving 1 1/2 runs to the home team in baseball whether they are the favorite or not? I have been experimenting with this theory for a few days now on paper before I actually wager, but see some good results. In a Round Robin format, this may be the difference between going 6 or 7 out of 8 for example and sweeping the board. If you pick the right matchups, the juice doesn't eat you up as bad, If you throw in a -1 1/2 matchup you are fairly certain of, the risk vs reward factor is considerable. Any thoughts?

If you look in my thread in the Tracker Forum, you will see that I play more runlines then anything else particularly if I like the pitcher and team match-ups. I like getting the positive juice in most instances and if I'm going to take the favorite, I'd rather lay the -1.5. Now, that is just me and many fine handicappers think otherwise so if I were you, I would continue to track the results and see if you are satisfied with outcome.

To determine an estimated annual income based on a 10K bankroll and a 55% winning rate, one would have to know how many wagers are going to be made, the risk amount of each wager, whether the wagering method is flat or a percentage of the bankroll or do the wagers vary in amount or percentage and do the wagers increase or decrease as the bankroll increases or decreases. As you can see, there is more to the question then the information provided.

Based on your example provided, a person wagering an average of 2 plays per night for 2 units at $250/unit will earn approximately $20,000/year if they win at a 55% rate while laying 10% juice. At 60%, they will earn approximately $58,000/year.

I read your thread in the Offshore Forum and noticed that Wil gave you the link to the Gambler's Bookstore in Las Vegas. I have been asked this question many times and always refer our posters to that same link. Through the years, I have been to that bookstore many times and it is without doubt the largest bookstore dedicated strictly to gambling information anywhere. I suggest you use their toll free number and ask for a free catalog as well as check their site closely looking for literature that you feel might be of value to you. Then call them up and explain the type of material you are looking for. Howard Schwartz is the owner and, when there, is very helpful if you can be as specific as possible.

Now, as to books I have read, actually I am self taught learning this business through the school of hard knocks. However, there are a couple of books that I think you may find interesting and enlightening. They are as follows:

"Lem Banker's Book Of Sports Betting" by Lem Banker and Frederick C. Klein

"Ten Keys To A Winning Season" by Phil Steele

Enjoyed your write up on the San Fran Giants. They really have some excellent arms. Hoping then can shut down the Marlins tonight in the late 10:00 PM game on the West Coast. Took the + money with the Giants at home in my Round Robin. A 1-0 Giant win would work just fine.

Glad you enjoyed my write-up on the Giants. Been a life long fan ever since they moved from New York in 1958. It nearly killed me to see them drop the World Series to the Angels a few years back leading 3-2 in games and 4-1 with Ortiz on the mound in Game 6 only to lose and then drop Game 7.. I follow them pretty closely. Randy Johnson going on the 15 disabled list is going to hurt as Sanchez will rejoin the starting rotation and he has been awful. Don't know if you caught my write-up on Tim Lincecum so I'll copy the link below. He is an absolute monster. He has 4 out pitches and IMHO is the most dominant pitcher in major league baseball today. If he stays healthy, I think he wins another Cy Young Award this year. As for tonight, hope you win your round robin.

Just looking at current MLB Stats this morning and noticed San Fransico is one of only nine MLB teams with 46 wins or better. LAD, Yankees, BoSox, St. Lou, Detriot are among the leaders. Pretty good company. How effective can the Giants be after All Star break? That is, can they put a Last Ten streak together of 9-1 8-2 etc, to really make up some games being only 7 back in their division. I know their pitching is their strong point, but if you could write the script how would you as a airchair manager bring about the runs needed on a daily basis to make them a major contender this fall? Gonna ask you to put on your thinking cap.

To this point the Giants have been riding the arms of their starting pitching staff which in turn has kept the bullpen fresh as well as the closer. This will change IMHO after the All Star break due to the loss of Randy Johnson both in the clubhouse and on the field. He is currently on the 15 day disabled list, but he has a strain of the left rotator cuff, and there have been estimates up to 8 weeks that he could be out. This really weakens to rotation. Lincecum is a monster, Cain not nearly as good and will need continuous run support, Zito must pick up the slack for the missing Johnson and he does have a history of pitching better in the second half of the season. Sadowski is likely to be up and down as he is young and inexperienced and Sanchez must do better then he did the first half of the season. Bochy is doing an excellent job of keeping his team fresh but unless guys like Molina start hitting, the team may not score enough to support their starters. In my opinion, they won't be able to catch the Dodgers unless the injury bug hits L.A., however they are a legitimate wild card contender. If they can get into the playoffs, then that starting pitching staff, if completely healthy, could be troublesome to their opponents. In honesty, they need more threats at the plate. Perhaps they can work a trade that will help them.

Tedster, I am new in the forum but I cannot call myself a newbie on betting horses, although most of my "experience" is based on WPS bets and a few pick threes.
Obviously, I've realized that I need to learn more about exotics. I would appreciate your advice on a system -if there's one- to efficiently bet on exotics like Exactas, Trifectas, Superfectas, Pick3's, Pick4's and some pick6's (I rarely play pick-6 except in some "carryon" times in California tracks).
For example, talking about EXA and TRI, suppose that I can handicap a race and I find three or four horses that I like, should I bet EBX and TBX part-wheeling with the top selection? with the first two? boxing all? I understand that the bankroll is very important to consider but still, is there something to be guided?
I like Pick3's very much. I firmly believe that playing wisely, this could be the best bet in a usual day. Any help on this matter?

Recently, I retired from my engineering career. The only thing I'm doing now, besides teaching a few hours in college, is betting on horses and MLB. Thank you in advance.

All sports require work to be successful and being successful is never easy no matter the sport. That being said, different players over time do become more proficient at certain sports then others, myself included. Through the years, my best sport has always been football.

To try and answer your question, exotics are actually where you make your money because if you play them correctly, your odds on return is greater then WPS. The key to exotics IMHO is to have key horse(s) in the race(s). Limit your exotics primarily to Daily Doubles, Exactas, Trifectas and Pick 3's. The Pick 4's, Pick 6's and others should be rarely played.

Now, you asked if you should part wheel or box in exactas and trifectas. Really, you should use your key as much as possible not box them all together. Don't leave out Daily Doubles as well. If races are wide open, using your key with "All" the horses can also be quite profitable if a long shot comes in either in a Daily Double, Exacta, Trifecta, or Pick 3. Unfortunately, its difficult to provide all the possibilities but the most important thing is the use the "key" horse. The better that horses odds, the better your exotic payout. If you don't have a key, don't bet the race. Hope this helps a little to get you started.
