I know, I know. I'm going to be considered a moron by 99% of you all. But I'm thinking about betting mostly 3 team parlays. I hit so many 3 teamers last year, and they have continued to consistently pay off for me. I guess I would never bet parlays only, but I am considering changing the strategy that I've been planning for the upcoming football and basketball seasons. I had planned on betting like the pros do- only straight bets and bet a lot of them. But the more I think about it, I think I may have more success betting only the games I love, and putting them in 3-team parlays. Just looking for your thoughts. I know that Fezzik and those sharpies will tell me this is stupid, but I'm just wondering if anyone has had similar results or ever thought of betting this way.

It is tough enough to win one, let alone 2 or more. I don't recall the last parlay I wagered.

I went through a several month span a couple of years ago when all I did was bet 2-team parlays for football and basketball. This was at mvpbets.com who offers 14-5 odds on a two-team parlay. I felt this was a good value, as well as good that they had let you keep the second game open for up to a week. I ended up making some good money during that stretch of time.

In looking back on all of that and comparing it to what you're mentioning here, I am not sure betting 3 team parlays would offer the same value. The only way I could see it being worth doing is if the odds payout seems reasonable (at least 6.5/1 if you can find it), and they allow keeping the second or third game open. I also would only advise doing this at times of the year when there are lots of games to choose from to fill your parlays with (for example, the stretch during November to December when NFL, NCAA football, NBA basketball, and NCAA hoops all going on provides lots of choices).

The other possible advantage with 3 team parlays is it would give you more hedging opportunities. When you win the first two games of one, you can decide if you want to hedge the third game a little so you can guarantee a payoff. I've never gotten involved with doing this but with the right amount of work you might be able to take advantage of some good chances there also.

You're not a moron for thinking of this idea. As long as you approach it with the right frame of mind, and can put in the work involved it might be worth giving it a try.

Don't take this wrong, Illini, but any of the books here at the RX or anywhere else love for players to play 3 team parlays.... you're giving up too much to survive doing this on a daily basis but the best of luck if you continue to do so.

I have no problem being called a moron, it certainly doesn't offend me. I have a lot of respect for the people here that know much more than I do. I'm just going by experience, and I just shake my head at the results I've had. I was very selective in the games I bet. Bob McCune talks about how some people just have the luck factor. My brother swears that I have it. So I'm just weighing my options and trying to devise a plan for the upcoming year. BTW, I don't bet baseball, but I did hit a parlay last night on the Cards, Braves, and Astros. Lucky SOB sometimes, I guess, cause I can't explain it.

Illini,

I wasn't calling you a moron, just trying to point out that you're taking the worst of it as far as betting goes. And that thing called luck comes and goes. But either way, GL on your plays.

I've been gambling for close to 30 years and I will tell you my friend parlay and teaser wagering are the biggest SUCKER bets to wager on. Whatever book you are placing your wagers with will be very happy and excited to take your action. Good Luck!! If you are that confident that you will hit a large % of three team parlays then you must really feel confident about hitting 2 out of 3 games which would put your winning % at about 66%. The sharpest players in the world are luckey if the hit 60% of their plays. If you had that kind of luck betting parlays you shoul really clean up playing these games sraight.

If you can hit 3 teamers, they actually have even better than actual odds. Actual odds at -110 are 5.96 to 1, and you can always get 6.5 to 1 for football by betting on Fridays with reduced juice. 6 to 1 is still more than fair, though. I know that they aren't easy to hit, but I love the idea of having it be okay to lose most of time, and still make a lot, as long as you win one once in awhile.

Illini-

you are absolutely correct in that 3-teamers offer a better payout than straight bets for football.

IMO nothing wrong with playing all 3-teamers...the only consideration is that the variance in your bankroll will be much higher. You are going to have a lot more losing days than winning days, but in the "long run" you should actually end up slighlty better.

That is how the theory goes, I know that. But for a recreational player, it sure does make things fun. I can't explain what happened last year, but it's hard to argue with results.

If one isnt betting parlays or teasers in football, they are not a supreme wiseguy.

To give TWO examples..........

2-team 6pt EVEN money or 2-team 7pt -110 teasers are a tremendous way to wager and make money.

To the astute player, these are an overlay.

Also, betting 2 team parlays at 14-5 or HIGHER is another strategic way to wager.........especially if your getting the BEST line on both games.

Having said this, there is NOTHING wrong with just limiting yourself to straight bets............hopefully laying less than -110.

More then half the people that view pages on this site bet parlays more then straight bets.

Not everyone bets on games expecting to win money

Enjoy your life and do whatever you want

Only a moron would think you were a moron for just betting parlays

Any Book in the world welcomes parlay betters! They hate when you play one game a day and hit most of the time!

Fish makes great points as always. Parlays at a book's posted odds of 13-5, 6-1...etc are junk though. Ripoffs. Only bet "true odds" parlays and make sure each line in the parlay is a good number. Otherwise don't bother. IMO though the best parlays are with baseball. Road/over, home/under and also underdog parlays.

Incidentally, I had an underdgog 4-teamer yesterday (Minny, MTL, Tampa, Seattle) for 25-1 that cashed the first 3 and then went up in flames when Seattle blew a big lead and lost in 18. A heartbreaker. I did manage however to hedge Seattle off some in-game during extras to return around 3.5X on my money so all was not lost.

As for betting ONLY parlays, no way. There are too many other good ways to make $$$. Why limit yourself?

I had better luck playing two-team round robin parlays picking 5 games to wager on.....you still have to win a good percentage of games to make it profitable, if you win the first three games you can hedge the other two out if given the time needed to do so, guarantee a profit regardless what happens to the other two games......doing this amplifies the payout as opposed to straight action, but you need a heavy bankroll because going 1-4 pays the same as getting swept at 0-5......

5-0 is just awesome at 13 to 5.....never played anywhere that offered 14 to 5....

How is a 6-1 three-teamer a ripoff?

Because the true odds are 7-1 on a 3-teamer.

If you shop around, there are many places that will give you 6.5-1.

True odds are 5.96 to 1. 6 to 1 is better than true odds.
