For those who have a Beverages and More store (BevMo) nearby, they have $5 beer tastings on Friday nights and $5 wine tastings Saturday afternoons. Your store may vary.

Had a few things to do today and did not get everything done in time to get to the tasting.
I'm sure I'll attend another one in the near future.

Looking forward to DSethi's report from Napa.

A wine merchant friend of mine invites me every so often when they have an industry function and they are a blast. You get to sample lots of great wines, talk to the reps and generally leave with a nice buzz.

I had a wine class (food and beverage) when I was in school and it was the hardest class I had. In 11 weeks we covered all the major wine regions. I can't believe how hard it was. I would get home and study for a good 1-2 hours. We had a paper every week, a test every week. At the end of each class lecture we got to taste 3-6 different wines of the region we were learning. We were aloud to bring a bottle to share and we were all split into groups. Each week a different group had to come up with a food and wine pairing. Loved that class sooo much! Take a test in the beginning, then lecture, then it was party time! Instructor told us of a story where he ruined a very old Grand Cru, can't remember the name, but he lost the cork in the wine and it was done, somewhere in the nieghborhood of 5 grand I believe.

My favs:

Rosemount Shiraz
Columbia Estate Reisling
Love almost all German wines
First time I ever tasted Ice Wine I almost shot a load, it was 130$ a split, very good stuff. You could taste winter time in the grapes, I was blown away.

Haven't had time for a wine tasting in a long time, need to get to one soon.

Just did a New Zealand wine tour (Central Otago) and tastings earlier this month, Lots of fun. Liked the whites quite a bit but the reds I tried were a bit dissapointing

Wine Spectator has a huge wine tasting here in Las Vegas on May 3 at the Venetian. It is one of 2 stops on what they call their Grand Tour. The entry fee is $ 200 and there will be over 200 Wineries pouring some of the finest wines in the world. Many of the owners and winemakers will be at this event. The other Tour stop will be in New York April 29. If anyone is really interested in tasting the finest wines, this is where to go. I am planning on attending the event here in Las Vegas. Anyone interested can go to www.winespectator.com

D,
I'd like to do the whole Napa Valley thing. Think it will be the next trip when I get the folks to fly out to the West Coast. They met me in San Diego and had a great time. I've never been to the Bay Area but will make it eventually.

My sister got me into the wines and as much as I love beer and the different styles, wines are like the microbrews on steroids. So much to learn and truly fascinating for guys like us with intellectual minds.

Tell the boys in DC I said hi.

Kermit,
Have you ever attended UNLVino? That's a little bit less pricey than WS and going to a better cause, I know it is coming up and I am pondering checking it out as well.

GD, No I'm not familiar with UNLVino but update me as to the cause and when and where. Better cause than tasting the best wines in the country ? I give plenty of $$ to charity so wine tasting is for my taste buds !:toast:
