I agree - I don't care. I'm so tired of these "sports pundits" pontificating about how corrupt all these players are for using enhancers such as roids. Do I think they should be using them? No, but I don't need to hear over and over and over again about how a certain ballplayer is a fraud and a cheat because he used something to give him an edge. Once I hear about a player who has been found using steroids, I don't need to keep hearing about it for the next month or two.

But they are more influenced by their parents.

That is, IF they view their relationship with their parents as being one of trust and confidence.

If your 13 year old has trust and confidence in you, then I believe you have little worry they will abandon your counsel and turn instead to some celebrity athlete with who they have no such relationship.

I don't worry about my own kids, but rather other children who grow up without the benefit of traditional family structure and guidance.

Your random 8th grader knows more about Alex Rodriguez than any other random person of the 299,999,999.

Whitney Houston, Heath Ledger and the pothead sitting next to them in class aren't random and they know a lot about those people

Save your energy for directing your kids down the right path and don't pretend you can Save The World.

Your kids being on a good path will create a ripple effect in your community that will greatly assist in creating the more healthy environment which you sensibly envision.

Neither you or I are responsible for the "random 8th grader". We are responsible for:

a) Our own selves....Making smart and healthy choices more often than not

b) Our minor-age family members .....Who as mentioned in previous post will very likely emulate Your and My behavior IF our behavior is worthy of respect. To help increase the odds of earning that respect, see "A" above

It was Sooooooo much better in the don't ask don't tell days of major league baseball...if you didn't know these guys were juicing shame on you...during the Maris chase, Big Mac had a bottle of Andro sitting in his locker and zits the size of a fist on his back.

Who cares, don't ask don't tell, sit back and watch the game.

Good topic.
I totally don't give a crap anymore. I feel like most people do...that is 'whay is the media making such a bid thing about this now?
The only thing that I really didn't like is that I am the kind of baseball fan that enjoys a 2-1 game as opposed to a 14-13 game, which is what we were seeing so much of about 8-9 years ago. But that's what MLB has always done. If they are trying to get more people to come out to the ballpark, they have always thought that scoring more runs and hitting more homers was the way to go. I like the way MLB is now(not as many runs scored), so I'm glad they cleaned it up for that reason.

You are right, I can't save the world. But, I can add my opinion to a message board, and I can speak my mind in other arenas about the fact that MLB players using steroids is a damn shame and a detriment to the game of baseball and society.

Nonsense.

As it is now, few MLB can use banned substances without huge financial and career risk.

Barman: I just re-read the thread, and caught this point you made, and I disagree 100%.

Actually, the MLB players who use steroids and HGH and banned substances are not risking financial gain, they are actually using them with the specific purpose to become rich and famous. And that is where the problem lies: they will set an example for future generations of kids to do the same.

If the example of steroids improving sports performance and leading money and fame was not made clear in the 60s, 70s and 80s, the baseball players who took it up over the past 10 years will not change that

Maybe I just give a lot more credit to high school students than you do. Most will generally do ok; others will be idiots no matter what any adult says or does. It is their own peer who either does or does not use drugs that will influence them far more than any celebrity. And so quickly they grow up and are making their own choices

So then step up and be a part of the peer group that does not condone steroid use, even on message boards.

What you do is far more important than what you say. Even on an internet message board. The "just say no" approach has never worked

Yes you can.

Fortunately it's a rare MLB player who today uses banned steroids.

bump.

I suspect some of those who claim they don't care will have something to say now.
