I see so many people get jobs through connections. " Oh, my boy hooked me up with this consulting job". So and so's dad, friend, brother, girlfriend's brothers husband's, friends, fraternity brother blah blah blah". THAT, I don't like. I don't like seeing people get jobs through the political process ( but it will sadly always happen). People hire who they are comfortable with but it blows when you are on the other end of it.

I've also seen the other ugly side of it, Affirmative action. I don't work in HR but I went on a recruiting trip at a college campus " hey fun guy". I got to see the resumes and meet the applicants and it sickened me to hear HR talk afterwards. They'd like one guy better but " we have to keep in mind diversity so maybe we should go for so and so". That pisses me off to no end when we have the perfect candidate but we have to downgrade because they aren't the right race. Fuck that.

When I came out of college I once applied for a job too and it basically came down to this, are you going to stay here... like for some time. Why? Because "Ebony" was hired, worked here for 3 months and then quit. " She was a nice enough girl, but we don't want that to happen again". I was in a 1 on 1 with a lady, she seemed smart and polite enough but it seemed like she was still pained/angered by the process. Everybody in the office was white, and the result was obvious.

One thing that I think screws people up is that they are unrealistic about salary expectations. Nobody wants to be paid the "average" rate for the position, everybody is "above average" but that's statistically impossible. If you get in with a good company and prove your worth you'll do fine.

Yep...I HATE it. Thought I was finally out of the industry after looking for YEARS. Finally found a great job, great city to live in...the worst part is I thought I HAD the job...only to watch it go down the fucking drain.

hey man, if you cant find anything where ur at, maybe you should say screw it and come down to TX anyways. low cost of living and i work for ups. we seem to have a new sales team hired every couple of months. plus, i dont know if you're open to law enforcement for the time being but sheriffs office as well as police department is always putting hiring signs up.

I was laid off last October and during the month and half I was laid off I sent Resumes out left and right. Was lucky to get called back. The kicker is I am getting calls about possible interviews now. That is 8 - 9 months after I sent a Resume. WOW

Excellent post and 100% correct.

eman - I've been with my current company for 2 years and had to switch career fields to get into this. Maybe 6 months or so ago I was talking with some of my coworkers and they were shocked to find out that I just applied on the website, went on the interviews and got hired. That NEVER happens. Most knows somebody, or gets their resume passed on, or get head hunted over from another firm... the affirmative action bullshit too.

These guys were cracking up laughing ... you mean... you applied online.. got a call back.. and they hired you?

I feel sorry for people because in this recession you could lose your job in the private sector not be you suck or are lazy, but it's just the economy as a whole. My advice is to have a good attitude, try and work your contacts, and apply apply apply. You have to apply to a shit load of jobs. I know it's boring and hard work, but think of each application like a lottery ticket, and just know that you only need 1 to hit.

It's like chasing pussy. A numbers game. You don't even have to try hard and throw all your efforts at 1 chick, if you talk to enough of them, you'll find one that will spread her legs for you.

Yeah, chasing pussy as a job hunting analogy.

C-Gold - I have been with mine for 4 years and have seen the workforce reduced from 150 down to 15. Needkless to say I have taken on 3 other jobs. It is tough but for now I wake up everyday happy I still have a job.

I have had one job interview my entire life. In 1975, I went for a training position with E. F. Hutton. I was turned down after getting into an argument with a gentlemen over the strength of Ivy League football. I told him OU could spot Dartmouth 99 points.

And be shipped out to War in 6 months. No thanks. I'd rather be unemployed then do that.

When Obama was campaigning he said we'd be out of Iraq within 3 months. :think2:

Not only did nothing change in Iraq, but he's sending extra troops to Afganistan... A "Surge" if you will. Now if grandpa Mcain had won and done the exact same things, the pinkos would be out calling him a war mongering George Bush part III in their protests.

but Obama does the exact same policies, waves his finger, reads some speech off his teleprompter, shoots some hoops, and goes on an "apology tour" and they love him.

Go figure.
