Never been more glad to have my own business, Jesus it's ugly out there. Girlfriend is over-qualified for everything she's applying for and getting nothing. Recruiting agencies are swamped, receptionist-type jobs are getting 100+ applicants at least. This is in Vancouver, Canada which wasn't even hit quite as bad with recession as certain parts of the US.

wow that is pretty fucked up. Why interview people when you know you will not be hiring for over a year?

The ad was placed before the hiring freeze, so the money has been spent and the candidates have been narrowed down. They want to keep interviewing so that when they are ready to hire, they will already have a short-list and the process will be quick.

I just think it's not right ... oh well.

the complete DUMB asses that run my place let about 30 people go on an extended furlough and then our service levels hit the shitter and we are losing money

why do they not fire the big idiots that walk around the office and act like a boss and do nothing all day PLUS cause the place to lose money..UNREAL^<<^

It's politics Dante. The managers were chosen for their positions by the people who make the decisions to let people go. Manager's bosses would rather have someone they get along with working for them rather than someone who is more competent.

So the firing managers have their own pet managers supporting them (read: kissing their ass, making political ties with them) so the pets are not going to be let go. After all, the firing managers feel these pets are managers over the peons and the peons need to be told what to do.

So the peons are let go.

Sick to my stomach. Im ready to pack my bags and leave this area. There are no jobs. I saw a post for a sales job the other day and the company wanted 10 years experience. Companies are being real selective because they know there is alot of personel available.

AlwaysRight, I think I saw a post where you said you were in the trucking business. My first 2 jobs out of college were for two big time shipping companies. I was an operations manager. I worked the dock as an Inbound Manager, P&D, Outbound. I hated that work. I was miserable and everyone I worked with was miserable. Locked in that warehouse setting all day working stupid shitty hours.

Yep...I HATE it. Thought I was finally out of the industry after looking for YEARS. Finally found a great job, great city to live in...the worst part is I thought I HAD the job...only to watch it go down the fucking drain.

Life can be tough AR, sometimes you have to learn to appreciate what you do have, like your health & family & friends.

I would not want to be job hunting in this environment, but I'm thinking people that do have jobs and or don't need jobs or don't need credit will start spending money again.

Sometimes relocation is the answer. It must be nearly impossible to find a job in the rust belt.

Good luck.

First of all I feel badly for everyone that is hurting and truly wish them well.

I work in a restaurant recruiting/staffing agency and we are inundated with calls everyday. 95% of the people we cannot help.

On my email the ratio of people emailing in looking for work vs a company saying "we need somebody" is 100 to 1. The ratio might even be higher.

I get paid on commission so I work all day and make nothing. Sucks. Then I try to find another (part-time) job to help get through this and can't find anything.

I will say that now is a tough time to be playing the "I did this for years and I got out of it but now I want to return" card. Companies have such a selection of people that someone who is currently unemployed or "got out of the business" is out of luck.

It will all turn around. Eventually. Maybe in a year. Good luck to everyone. Now more than ever employment is a "lottery".

It's crazy seeing positions posted for a $20,000/year salary and employers writing "Master's Degree Required".

Who goes to get their Master's Degree coming out hoping to make 20k/year?

Nothing is available for the entry-level. Every position is 2-3 years of FULL TIME experience required.

20% of college graduates had jobs before graduation. In 2007 that number was 51%.

The other end of those below-$30k positions is that when the economy does turn around those people that accepted those positions will leave (middle finger fully extended) and the companies will be forced to up the pay just to have someone/anyone.

Another thing to look at is when jobs are posted. Alot of companies have monthly Careerbuilder.com and Monster.com accounts and they pay for so many ads per month. If they do not "use the ads" they "lose them" ~ so alot of company's "dump the ads" (just put up something) and go resume collecting even though there isn't really a job available.

Being an older shit head I have seen this before,my first time was the Nixon administration but I lived at home and didn't really live it.

Then was the Carter administration flowing over to Reganomics.

Interest rates were over 10% and a job would get advertised and applicants would wrap around the block, software engineers held signs up at on ramps and seemed like armageddon.

We have always pulled out of it as is a cycle.

Hell the Clinton era we were fat and happy and we spent like it was going to be that way for ever.................

I know if I were in those shoes it would suck but history shows better days are ahead.
