i dont know why people are ok with using pills as their first step rather than adjusting their lifestyle. xanax does not get you good quality sleep despite those that swear by it. it suppresses REM. this is a fact. you also build up tolerance so good luck getting higher dosages in the future

sleep hygiene is #1
bed is for sex or sleep only
no pets, electronics, or tv while in bed
no exercise right before bed (endorphins) and avoid eating /snacking right before bed
if you drink caffeine, change it to an earlier time before your last drink. if you smoke cigarettes, for the love of god do not smoke in the evening before bed.
booze before bed is bad. like benzos, alcohol ruins your sleep cycles.
exercise is good for your if you do it regularly.
reading before bed is fine.
do not nap during the day.

If you never been there, you will never understand it. I have 18 year old son, and twin 9 year old girls. My wife works part-time and takes care of EVERTHING. She just had shoulder surgery from a car accident. I had to do everything that she does and work 50 hours a week, and my bosses throwing more and more on me. My body would shut down in bed around 12 am, but my mind wasn't. I was falling asleep at 3am and getting up at 5am. I had six hours of sleep in 4 days. If you can't sleep you can not function.

had it years ago and my recommendations:

#1 don't take any pills. absolutely awful suggestions as it's not a long-term solution. If u absolutely positively want to ingest something then it should be a calming tea before bed followed by a bit of melatonin
#2 don't ever watch TV in bed or fire up your phone or tablet. If you have a kindle (newer ones without the screen refresh) then read on kindle or with hand-held book both before bed and anytime you wake up and can't go right back to sleep. Worst thing you can do is lie there and piss yourself off about how you wish you were sleeping
#3 no naps, no caffeine.
#4 get a good sized eyemask and wear it. of course it helps to block out all light but also becomes a reminder to your brain to STFU because it's time to sleep
#5 again, no TV. get it out of the room and never let it back in

I take a walk before bed every night with my dogs. One thing thats great about dogs is they love a routine! I think dinner and bedtime should be around the same time every night. Bedtime should be routine too. I do watch tv in bed but I go to bed like 3 hours before it is time to go to sleep. This is a winter routine and as it gets warmer and light longer bed time will be later. Try the same routine every night for a week and see what happens.

i've been there but the goal is to treat the stress with a healthy outlet, ie exercise. the anxiety you have from work and family is not going to change anytime soon. pills will only get you the false sense of security that you are getting sleep but your body isn't going to be fooled and that quality of sleep you'll be getting from pills will never amount to good quality of sleep even though in fewer hours. power naps work because they are high quality sleep, but if you're already not sleeping, power naps are not a viable alternative.
