Personally you can loose National Velvet and replace it with Field of Dreams (listed #6 in the Fantasy Film category) as far as I am concerned..The other nine are among my favorite movies, sports related or not...

I enjoyed the movie 61 also. Directed by Billy Cyrstal the story is supposedely very close to to what really happend during the 1961 Home Run Race in The American League between teamates Roger Maris and Micky Mantle as they chased Babe Ruth's most famous record of 60 homers in a season. Maris hit his 61st on the last day of the season into the right field porch at Yankee Stadium off Boston's Tracy Stallard.

Then MLB Commissioner Baseball Commissioner Ford Frick announced that unless Ruth's record was broken in the first 154 games of the season, the new record would be shown in the record books as having been set in 162 games while the previous record set in 154 games would also be shown.

Good baseball movie with an interesting plot and especially enjoyable to fans who remember that season and the different Yankee ballplayers that were depicted in the movie.

Field of Dreams got it's due but in the fantasy category - 6th place.

Bad News Bears and Slapshot should be in there. Thought Jerry Maguire was overrated.

Viejo dinosaur

Fear Strikes Out should be there somewhere....

The story was very compelling and Karl Malden was excellent as Jimmy Piersall's dad but Anthony Perkins was badly miscast as a pro athelete (Piersall) IMOH. Still in it's day a very good movie about mental illness that happened to effect the career of a major league ball player.

Just remember that the American Film Institute is a bunch of gay art men and know very little about sports. Take this list for what it's worth.

"Somebody up there likes me" about Rocky Graziano starring Paul Newman is always forgotten.

Let it Ride (1989) is #1 and everything else is running for second.

That is the 1st movie that comes to mind for me anytime anyone asks about sports movies or gambling movies...although i guess it would be fair to say its more of a gambling movie, but a classic....

also on the list i would have thought would be A League of Thier Own (i know alot dont like it, but it was filmed here by my house, i have a special fondness), and Field of Dreams..

although i love it, i dont consider Caddyshack a "sports" movie

glad "Rudy' wasn't on there. Most people always mention Rudy, i don't know it was good, but not that special, at least IMO.

can't believe Goodfellas was over GF PII.
