My 25 man roster. (and 10 September call-ups)

CA: Johnny Bench - ultimate combo of bat and glove behind the dish.
1B: Lou Gehrig - one can only imagine, "what if"
2B: Raja - 5 years of .400 avg
3B: Mike Schmidt - Awesome bat and above avg glove.
SS: Honus Wagner - Best in a rather shallow position.
RF: Babe Ruth - Imagine if he didnt begin his career as a pitcher? He hit more HR then full teams.
CF: Willie Mays - Best all around player ever.
LF: Teddy Ball game - What if he didnt serve in the war????

RHS: Clemens - In an era of the 5 man rotation...300 wins is invincible.
LHS: Koufax - Most dominant lefty ever.

Bench:
CA: Mike Piazza (I am a Yankees fan)
1B: Jimmy Foxx
2B: Nap Lajoie

He is a 1B. There is no DH on this team.

MADCapper, no reason for you to have an excuse for putting Rickey Henderson on the team. He is the best lead off man in history by far. Plus you need some speed on the team. He would be a permenant pinch runner and a great backup lead-off man behind Honus Wagner.

RPM? Although Eddie Murray did his 3000 hits and 500 Homeruns, and although he did that in an era where the balls weren't juiced and weight lifting was not HUGE in baseball, he did all of that with longevity and not explosiveness. He never had a season with gaudy, eye popping numbers. In my opinion, he doesn't deserve to be on an all-time team but definitely an all-time switch hitting team. He probably is the 2nd best switch hitter of all time right?

Brooks Robinson might be considered for an all time defensive team...but not an all-time all-time team.

SSI,
Spahn was a finalist but didnt get over the humb for me. It was between him and Carlton as a LHS in September.

Batting order:
1. Wagner (SS)
2. Williams (LF)
3. Mays (CF)
4. Ruth (RF)
5. Gehrig (1B)
6. Schmidt (3B)
7. Hornsby (2B)
8. Bench (CA)
9. Pitcher (SP)

I can't believe Schmidt is generally considered the best Third baseman of all time...and bench to be the best catcher. Those positions seriously lack in quantity in terms of superstars. (maybe 2nd baseman too)

Murray not only is the 2nd best switch hitter ever he`s the 2nd best first baseman ever...Ask anyone close to the game back then and he will be right at the top...True he never had the monster year he but was just very good for his whole entire career

... When the game was on the line he delivered, he didn`t play on alot of high run producing teams either and still ammased 1900 RBI`s the equvalent of about 2300 today...

Murray played in his prime in the dead ball 80`s and in big ball parks like Memorial Stadium , Dodger Stadium, when he played for the Mets there was no one on the team besides Strawberry who batted behind him....When he went to Cleveland late in his career , he was 2nd in avg before getting hurt, he was having a great yr at the age of 39.


Murrays numbers inflated to todays game would look like this..

625 HR easily, compared to 504 that he hit...

2300 rbi compared with the 1900+ rbi

.287 avg , jack that up to maybe .300

Without having a DH I think Piazza is a stretch, even for a late callup. A cinch for the all-time "switch-hitter" team, however. Well, switching might be questionable.

Going forward, seriously, I would have to find room for Josh Gibson, Shoeless Joe, Roberto Clemente and Jackie Robinson.

Don't know right off who I'd take down for the others but there are a number of catchers way better than Piazza (your team does have to play defense, right).

In any event, very interesting.
