i actually have to agree with Gil here, if you take the award at its face value "most valuable player" he is the mvp like he said above where would detriot be without this guy...he wont get 1 1st place vote but his #s are amazing and has won 7 in a row where detriot up until the last week has been locked in a playoff duel with cleveland...

Granderson or A. Gon if the vote were held today but you never know.
Ted Williams won the triple crown in 1942 & 1947 but lost out in the MVP voting so a deserving player may not get it!

Detroit is up 5.5 games for one reason and one reason only.
19 game winner Justin Verlander.

Now usually I'm reluctant to back a player who appears in only 35 games, but he's solely responsible for 19 of Detroit's wins, with out him, Detroit is not in first place.

How is that not *valuable*

Grandy, or Gonzo are very valuable to their teams, however the two of them did not account single handedly for19 wins.

Verlander is most *valuable* by definition.

p.s. fun fact

Since MLB went to the division format in 1969, Verlander, Maddux, and Pedro are the only pitchers to have WH/IP ratio's of under 0.90 after 20 starts in any season.

Bautista will get it for what he did last year....his RBI total would be higher if anyone was on base when he hits, which is rarely. And he is without question, the toughest player in the majors to pitch to...walks..once a game which lowers his BA....its his overall numbers that stand out....he is always on base..always...

6th in AL in BA (.318)
1st in AL in HR (36)
8th in AL in RBI (80)
2nd in AL in R (91)
1st in AL in BB (103)
1st in AL in SLG (.652)
1st in AL in OPS (1.111)
