I had this happen to me a long time ago.

I called the cops and they eventually tracked down the the person that killed my cat and the individual gave me some cash as compensation.

That was the GOOD news.

The BAD news was then the cop arrested me for selling pussy.

I really don't care much for cats.
My dog was hit by a car and the person never even stopped.

Cats are a lot like gamblers ! They sleep 16 hours a day, produce nothing, expect a free living !

They are independant ! As to wether cats, or dogs, are smarter... that's debatable !

Cat's aren't as affectionate as dogs, but require far less care. A dog must be walked, maybe 3-times a day, just for defecation. A cat uses a litter box, even a toilet ( with proper training ).

A cat can be left locked in the house for 2 days, while you go away, provided food and water, a dog can't ! OK, you could say the same for fish !

I say gamblers are more like cats, than dogs !

This may be a long thread !

I had this happen to a dog of mine. My dog is missing for a week. Im on my way home from work and see him off the left side of the highway. I pull off to the right and get out of my car to go get him, but he is so happy to see me that he comes running across the road. It was like slow motion and a car runs him down. The dog lived, but the driver did not even stop. He slowed and then sped away as the dog lie on the road. I was in the middle of a big highway picking up my dog as many cars stood still and watched. It was very sad as I thought he would die. He had a few broken bones.

I bet on a lot of dogs ( not greyhounds ), I don't know how to bet on cats, unless you mean Det Tigers, Cinc Bengals, etc. !

Legal Obligations upon hitting an animal ?

Depending upon where you live... you hit a squirrel, rabbit, armadillo, coyote, racoon, oppossum, etc.

maybe it was a dog, cat, you may not know ! If an interstate, certainly hard to stop !

Even a domestic animal (pet ) shouldn't be left loose !, esp. a dog.

Now you hit a dog with your car ( or cat ). What are legally ( and morally) responsible to do ?

Let's say you hit a big Doberman, broken leg, or so you guess. Attempting to transport this animal to a vet is dangerous, it may bite you !

You may be in unfamiliar territory ! Maybe you don't have a cell-phone !

What are your legal obligations ?

If it was a squirrel, armadillo, possum, etc., cat (?), you call it road-kill and continue on your way.

Tough questions ? I hope so !

Certainly if it was a child, you couldn't drive off, without facing potential felony charges, but a dog, cat, etc, is less concrete !

Interesting question ?

I'm not saying just run them over, but when did pet owners get absolved of thier responsibility towards leash laws and animals received the right of way in traffic....???

Reminds me of someone I knew, that had a real moody dane/dalmation type dog.....he lived about a mile from the city limits....one day the dog got off it's chain and went down the lane and subsequently got hit by traffic on the highway.....

All I heard from the dogs owner was about how the driver didn't stop and the dog died by the road....and this and that and blah,blah,blah....I got the impression that he thought that the dog had the right of way and the driver should have been prosecuted...

He's just lucky as hell that dog didn't get loose and go tear someone's kid up in thier own backyard......I catch anyone's dog in a situation like this, that dog is one dead dog and maybe the owner too, given due time...
