Because while he was a coach he got caught betting on football. They kept it low key and said your out, find a new gig.

Interesting, but we still have the "burder of proof" pitfall as usual. If these rumors can be substantiated this would be fun reading!

Think about this....He became head coach of the Raiders at age 32. He coached for 10 years and in those 10 years he was 103-32-7. Thats a winning percentage of .750 which I believe is still the highest in History. He won 7 Western division championships and a Super Bowl in 1977. We all know how much he loves the game and your gonna tell me he just up and walked away because he didnt want to coach anymore? Why didnt he get any other coaching offers....You would think that there would be some clubs going after a 42 year old coach with an Lifetime NFL win percentage of .750 who took his team to the playoffs 7 out of ten years and won a Super Bowl wouldnt you?

Sure 8 but we need some "proof", it could well be he just did not want to coach anymore! Like the other guys alluded to, Michaels makes gambling comments all the time, whereas Madden never does but hell if its true, Madden was a gambler, that would be extremely interesting!

I find it hard to believe that one could think madden is not fluent with gambling. This guy has traveled the world with sports figures. He prob is part of a syndicate that rolls in wagering money.

My point is that all we have now, are sweeping generalizations!

I'd love to believe that Madden is a degenerate but I have always been someone whom needs proof!

You really think there is proof anywhere?? No. Of course theres no proof. NFL said walk and nobody will know so he walked right into the announcers booth which IS THE NEXT BEST THING TO BEING ON THE SIDELINES! I dont know why you guys act like this is so unbelievable. Madden got special treatment unlike Pete Rose. The league respected Madden and what he had done in his career so they kept it on the Down Low.

If this is not true then why did he retire? You really think he wanted to stop?? I guess thats why he took a job where he would do nothing but eat sleep and drink football the rest of his career huh?

Madden quit on his doctor's advice after developing a bleeding ulcer. Once he got into broadcasting, he became an instant success and didn't need (or want) to go back to the grind.

Actually, Webmaster is right on the button there. I met John not long after he retired from the Raiders and during his medical sabbatical.

When you throw in his intense dislike of flying, he has it all so much better now than he did as a coach, and no one is second guessing any decisions the next day on top of it.
