The announcement was made by Brewers Executive Vice President and General Manager, Doug Melvin.

"This was a very difficult move to make, and we appreciate all of the work that Ned has done to develop this team into a contender," Melvin said. "In the end, this was a collaborative decision made to put our Club in the best position for the final two weeks of the season." Dale Sveum, the Brewers third base coach, will take over in an interim role as manager for the remainder of the season. Bench Coach Ted Simmons has been reassigned to an advisory role. Any other coaching changes will be announced later.

Are you serious. Fired with 2 weeks left while tied in the wild card race?????????? That's unbelievable. Has anyone ever seen this sort of thing?

I thought Ned Yost did a pretty good job with what really is a shitty team. They have gotten this far with two starters, a gashouse bullpen and a punch and judy lineup. They're a below average team at best that really never should have gotten as far as they have. They won't make the playoffs and they don't deserve to.

It's happened in the NHL a few times. Lou Lamoriello comes to mind. The Devils had the 2nd best record in the NHL and Lou fired Claude Julien with 3 games to go. I'm surprised that George Steinbrenner didn't pull this kind of move back in the day.

I think there will be a nice warm seat in arizona for yost next season. Perfect type of a team for him to excel at.

Me thinks something happened behind the scenes here,

There are reports everywhere that Yost was seriously gripping and not acting very confident around the team.

If they end up making the playoffs, it will look like a great move. But I'm not sure.

They are still better than the Phillies and Astros. Nothing will change my mind about that.

Most of the people who posted before me are fucking idiots. If you watched this team on a nightly basis you would understand. Yost rarely bunts runners over with no outs in close games, sticks with players WAY too long when they are struggling (and there are better options available on the bench), and makes other boneheaded moves on a regular basis (for example, he had 34 year old Jason Kendall catch both games of a doubleheader yesterday, even though he is struggling mightily (hitting .133 in the last 10 games), while backup catcher Mike Rivera rots on the bench despite having a .382 OBP and a .311 BA in 20 games this year).

The worst part about Yost is how he is nothing but an enabler with no sense of urgency. Every postgame interview was exactly the same: "Well, you know, we're out there battling. We're working hard, we're just having a tough time right now. It's just one game, we're going to go out and try to get them tomorrow." We need someone who will light a fire under these young players asses and give them a sense of urgency. Yes, one game is just one game, but when you're 3-11 in the month of September you can't pretend like everything is fine. That was the same attitude Yost had last year as the Brewers watched the division slip away in the last 2 months of the season. Something needed to be done, the sooner the better.

A buudy of mine who works in the front office for the Astros say "Brewers have had success this season *in spite* of Yost.

Glad another Brewer fan already posted before me about what a bunch of idiots rhe rest of you are - tell me your hometown team, I'll say a bunch of random stuff about it and see how you feel.

I watch every Brewer game and have been a lifelong fan.
Ned Yost should have been fired last year after the collapse - the management decided to give him another opportunity.

Is firing him now drastic? YES
Did he deserve it? Absolutely, but instead of waiting for 2 more weeks, when we miss the playoffs, why not do it now and see if it can spark something - what does it hurt?

I am a Brewer fan and have accepted the fact we are not making the playoffs - the only chance we got is if somehow the Mets (b/c the Phillies won't) choke and we somehow sneak in going (maybe) 7-5 our next 12 games.

In general, to those of you who say we are actually a "shitty" team - are you kidding me?

They are in a slump right now, it happens - but how can any rational person say this is a "shitty" team - please explain to me?

5 players over 20 HR's, 2 all stars, 2 ace pitchers.... sounds shitty

the Brewers struggle with bullpen and bottom of the rotation starters - but are a playoff team - but we have bad coaching (yost) and we struggle hitting b/c we are a power team (no HR's = we have trouble winning)

Yost also has no clue when to pull pitchers and it has cost u a minimum of 5 games this year (single handedly)

in conclusion - whats the difference between ned yost at the bartender at applebees?
The bartender still has a job and knows how to handle pitchers

Yost seems like a good guy, but his inability to handle game situations (most notably his bullpen) killed him in the end. He was also to stubborn to change how he used certain players, especially vets. Having a team rife with young, immature drama queens certainly didn't help his cause either.

Frankly, the Brewers have nothing to lose at this point. I think this move will either go very well or it could backfire horribly. They probably will either go 10-2 or 2-10 the rest of the way. Don't shed any tears for Yost though as I guarantee that he will be Bobby Cox's bench coach next year, and most likely will succeed him in 2010. The Braves job is probably his dream job anyway.

Very well said.
