The Yankees have to make a payment to Major League Baseball of $34,053,787. The Red Sox must pay $4,156,476. These are luxury, or competitive-balance, tax bills, the amounts that the Yankees and the Red Sox have to pay for exceeding the payroll threshold of $128 million. The Yankees had a payroll of $213,134,467, the Red Sox $141,854,919. No one else has to pay the luxury tax, the Mets' payroll being the closest to the threshold at $119,237,389.

LOL- at 'competetive balance' aka, 'the price to get to the playoffs annually' more appropriate name for it.
