will end up paying more for Brown than they would have had to pay to keep Pettite.

wil, Brown is superior to Pettite (as long as he's healthy of course).

New York immediately went to its backup plan, acquiring pitcher Kevin Brown from the Los Angeles Dodgers in a trade for pitcher Jeff Weaver and two minor league prospects, Newsday is reporting.

The completion the trade depends on all players involved passing physical exams

The Yankees will also send $3 million to the Dodgers to compensate for Weaver's salary. Brown will make $15 million in 2003 and 2004. Weaver is set to make $6.25 million in 2003 and $9.25 million in 2004. The Yankees will pay $1.5 million each year to the Dodgers for the term of Weaver's contract.

Brown was healthy most of his career until '01 and '02 but he had a full productive year last year. He's had years, including last year, that Pettite only dreams he could have. I'm not fooled by Pettite's 21 wins last year, Brown obviously was, and is, the better pitcher. Saying Brown is finished is idiotic IMO.

Wil - Weaver showed star potential when he was with the Tigers (of all teams). But I don't think he was ever comfortable in New York.

If Weaver can harness his temper and be with a good pitching coach, I think he can be at least a consistent 15-game winner for many years.

d2...agree that brown is better than pettite but, brown has had his best years in the 2 best pitcher's parks in baseball - florida and l.a.

pettite always pitched in the a.l. so he had to face nine hitters while brown only had to face eight. also, no one can argue that pettite is one of the best "big game" pitchers in the league today.

it will be interesting to see what happens. i predict that brown will probably win more than 14 games next year but i will be shocked if his era and whip is better than last year.

I really hope Kevin gets to keep his own private personal Jet to fly him around to what ever city the Yanks are playing in.

It must be a bitch flying any other way.

A healthy Brown is still a very good pitcher. He stays in great shape, and is a bulldog competitor. He may be the new Rocket for the Yankees. The Yanks also unloaded the unwanted Jeff Weaver. Andy Pettite signed for 31 million with Houston, even though the Yanks made a last ditch 39 million offer. The fact that Texas has no state income tax, made the offers comparable.

The NYY got a great deal. They got rid of a 6 million dollar a year loser in Weaver and got a #1 ace pitcher in Brown. I do believe Pettitte will have problems pitching in Hou. Pettitte also got hit hard at Wrigley. The Cubs lit him up.
