Wyoming +4½
Most of the country could not care less about tonight's "other" game on ESPN2 between Wyoming and Colorado State, however, I certainly do. Tonight marks the 96th meeting between the two schools which makes it one of the oldest rivalries in the entire country in what has become known as the "Border War". Ever since Sonny Lubick arrived as Colorado State head coach in 1993, the Rams have dominated the series. HOWEVER, that all changed a year ago when Wyoming finally broke through with a 35-28 victory at home where the fans tore down the goalposts and head coach Joe Glenn was carried off the field like he just won the national championship. I want you all to know that most of the Colorado State players have NOT forgotten that game, and are seeking redemption tonight, BUT that has only inflated tonight's price tag as the Rams opened as only a TWO point favorite!!! Why did Wyoming finally break through in the Border War last year? It was because of special MOTIVATION caused by ex-Rams QB Bradlee Van Pelt who said the Colorado had taken over as the "main rival" of Colorado State. That comment provided BULLETIN BOARD material to Wyoming who felt insulted by that comment. There is more BULLETIN BOARD material created for the Cowboys this season! Colorado State DB Ben Stratton stands by his comment of a year ago when he promised that his team would NOT lose again to the hated Cowboys. If you really think about it, Stratton's comment should hold up as Wyoming has LOST 16 consecutive conference games on the ROAD. However, a breakthrough on the ROAD this evening would MAKE Wyoming's entire season a successful one!!! Wyoming is off to a 4-2 start, which is their best record out of the gate dating back to 1999. What better way for them to finally break through on the road than against their bitter rivals. The KEY to this selection has to do with the QUARTERBACK position. Wyoming has EXPERIENCED junior Corey Bramlett directing a BALANCED attack that has averaged 213 yards per game in the air, and 142 yards per pop on the ground. The great thing about Bramlett is that he can BOTH run and pass the football, making him a double threat that the Rams defense must try and contain. I want you all to know that Colorado State ranks DEAD LAST in their conference, averaging just 82 yards RUSHING per game. That is critical because if the Rams cannot run tonight, they are in big trouble due to a huge INJURY at the quarterback slot. Entering last week, CSU quarterback Justin Holland was ranked #3 nationally in total yards passing. Holland suffered a BROKEN LEG last week and is OUT FOR THE SEASON. That means CSU is going to have to go with a freshman QB by the name of Caleb Haine, who last year at this point was thinking about his high school prom. CSU coaches do NOT want to overwhelm Haine, which means the awful Rams running game must perform, which is big trouble. Getting back to this RIVALRY, some vandals actually broke in to CSU's home field earlier in the week with chemicals and burned the letters "UW" onto the field. If you watch the field real close tonight on ESPN2, you may still be able to see the letters which CSU's ground crew attempted to mask with spray paint. Yes, this is going to be a WAR tonight which is why I am gladly TAKING the generous points. Wyoming is 13-2 ATS SINCE 1992 against excellent passing teams like Colorado State who average at least 275 yards per game in the air. Remember, CSU now has to play the rest of the season with a FRESHMAN quarterback due to a horrible injury setback a week ago.
Colorado State U 48½
The KEY to this total is that Colorado State suffered a devastating injury to starting quarterback Justin Holland last week. Holland was #3 IN THE NATION in overall passing yards, but he suffered a BROKEN LEG last week and is out for the season. That means Colorado State will have to start a FRESHMAN at quarterback for the rest of the season. Colorado State coaches do NOT want to overwhelm Caleb Haine with too much information too soon, so the Rams will be CONSERVATIVE on offense tonight. The bad news for the Rams is that they are ranked LAST in their conference, averaging just 82 yards rushing per contest, so I expect the CSU offense to struggle most of the night. On the other side of the ledger, Wyoming quarterback Corey Bramlet has been INCONSISTENT this season. Bramlet looks like a world beater one week, but struggles the next. Wyoming as a team has struggled on the ROAD where they have lost 16 consecutive conference tilts. However, Wyoming's DEFENSE is licking their chops at the thought of intimidating a FRESHMAN quarterback, so I look for them to apply immense pressure on Colorado State this evening. The reason why this posted total is so high is due to the fact that 63 total points were scored between these 2 rivals a year ago. However, that INJURY that Colorado State suffered at the quarterback slot a week ago is going to severely hamper the way they go about things offensively. Next I want to deal with the WEATHER at Fort Collins, Colorado this evening. There is only a slight 30% chance of rain/snow showers, but the WIND will be kicking anywhere from 10-25 MPH, with sustained gusts at around the 14 MPH mark. With the winds kicking like that, it is going to be COLD tonight out west where the temperatures will be in the 40's. The colder it gets, the harder it is to grip the football. Wyoming is 8-0 UNDER against solid passing teams like Colorado State. But remember that CSU is now down to a freshman signal caller. By the way, CSU is 10-3 UNDER/HOME versus a team with a winning record, while Wyoming is 10-2 UNDER in the month of October. Check all calendars.
GOOD LUCK
