this is just the security department freaking out (both at neteller and the credit card companies)

I might (just MIGHT) excuse neteller......I mean if you are calling them , confirm your info and everything cant they just leave the account open so you can USE it?

But the banks......if they dont want risk simply dont offer a credit card , it is OBVIOUS that many many people use the cc's on travel as a way to avoid carrying gazillion $$$$$$$

I have even heard stories from people that have united/continental/american frequent traveler credit cards and they ALSO get blocked, how ironic.........

I'm probably misunderstanding something, somehere. But am finding it hard to believe that US credit cards can't be used in a foreign country. Have thing gotten THIS out of hand?
Not talking anything to do with Neteller here. And not talking online gambling transactions.

They told me I was using it in a high risk area for criminal activity. It was at a popular coffee house in a neighborhood of Mexico City where both locals and tourists are. My charge was for all of 120 pesos. They said exactly what Neteller seems to say, if you want to use it again call us from a number we can verify is in the US and we will unlock it. Otherwise if you get over some amount we have to file reports with the government and they would prefer not to do that. They advised me next time I travel outside the US to call them before and advise them to put on my records what countries I will be in for what dates.

It seems my other CC was just a bad merchant machine, it worked when I tried it in another location.

Yes, credit cards can be used internationally, if there is no block in place.

Call your credit card company before you leave the country and make sure they remove any international block on your account, if one is in place. They do this for security reasons many times but will remove it if you ask.

Also call your cell phone company before you leave, some have international roaming blocked as well.

H'mm, I was away from home last week, but still in BC, and had my card declined. Actually they wanted a phone call for verification.

So the bottom line was I had used it at a merchant that was high risk, had a security note on my file and was issued a new card that came within 4 days. Of course they don't disclose the merchant so now I have this vision of hot merchants around the country which if you have the misfortune of using kills your card.

That does not surprise me very much ....They have seen activity that the average person may not be aware of in some cases.

I'll tell you what I am SICK of. Every credit card statement seems to come today with a NEW privacy provision(S)--regulations or whatever the term. WTF is this all about? I smell nothing like attorneys looking to sue someone. We all want Privacy--but if it takes 3 pages of fine print for me to read--than I know it's too difficult for me to grasp.

have you read the bologne? I am 95% sure that your privacy is LESS each time they add more lines, I mean, they probably can share your purchase pattern with a store in Hong Kong if they discover you like Hong Kong

Let me tell you a 100% true story. My mom who is well into her 80's recently had a small skin cancer removed from her lower leg. It was done in the doctor's office with only a shot of novacain and she was not put to sleep. Anyway, she was extremely nervous and when the procedure was over and she was waiting to be released from the office she asked the nurse, to please don't close the door behind you, "I think I may faint". The nurse told her--"she had to close the door, because of the privacy act"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This country HAS LOST IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Has anyone had any success with notifying Neteller in advance that you will be travelling out of the country and accessing your account and asking that it be allowed and not locked up?

Unless I am traveling really long term, I just make my neteller transactions before I leave the country. I make as many neteller transfers as anyone and with a little planning, I can live without them for 7-10 days.

If I need to make one from abroad, I either call my brother to do it or use a US proxy.

just one little warning, if neteller security is as paranoic (I don't totally blame them for that though) they might research the IP and see if they can match it to list of known proxies.

Its probably good advice to do neteller transactions ONLY in the area where they know you live

Ahh, nice. This fukkin Bush administration crap has to end. I go to our neighboring country for a couple of weeks and my cards are cut off because of "security purposes required by the Federal government regulations" and now this. Geez, does going to Mexico make you a terrorist threat now???

LOL, no man its for your safety to make sure no one has gained access to your account BUSH Admin LOLOLOLOL as if the gov has anything to do with neteller if it were up to them they would shut it down.

actually those 'reports and forms' that the bank 'threatened' with are a direct result of the huge reporting requirements that the banks face these days

if you pay your cc in full YOU may be in trouble , http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2006/03/the_terrorist_t.html (note: I personally know a person that was told by his bank that his unusual activity was problematic from a national security point of view........)

using your cc outside the USA as per what WB was told is now a problem as well?

when neteller disabled my account when i was out of the country, i was on the phone to the security department for over 45 minutes at about .33 cents a minute.

everything was all set to be turned back on however i had to answer an additional security question. list 3 previous addresses.

i got the first 2 right off the bat but i was stumped on the third as i havent moved very much. the guy kept prodding me and finally said "it might not be an actual street address"

i said WTF unreal.

after way too much time i somehow remember a p.o box i had in 1995.

so i think everything is cool but then he says we just have to verify your in the country you say you are. i ask, how do we do that and he states neteller will call me at a physical address in said country.

i gave the name of the hotel i was staying in and they call over there but im not there yet and they need the person answering the phone to look at my passport while they verify who i am. luckily i was walking in just as this was going on because i probably would have had to start over.

Yes just call and tell them you will be traveling and they will take this restriction off your account.

If I'm really desperate I can modem into my ISP from anywhere in the world at a reasonable cost. Even though the IP address will differ it will still be within my home area.

Yes - modem in if you must use neteller or email a friend and have them do it.

Neteller like paypal does not like transactions from shady parts of the world. Like it or not, a hell of a lot more scams happen in Mexico, NIgeria, Panama, etc than the US as banking regulations are lesser and money is more valuable and crime is less punished.

WVU - how many peer to peers was too many? Why did you keep sending the money through yourself when you could have just sent it from one account to another? Did Neteller pay you your cash?
