Canseco plans to shake off rust to try out for Dodgers

VERO BEACH, Calif. -- Jose Canseco plans to try out for the Los Angeles Dodgers, 2½ years after his last appearance in the major leagues.


The six-time All-Star will attend the Los Angeles Dodgers' open tryout on March 1.

"Canseco's people called us," Matt Slater, the Dodgers' director of professional scouting, said Tuesday. "He's welcome to come."

Canseco last played in the majors in 2001, when he hit .258 with 16 homers for the Chicago White Sox.

He and Mark McGwire teamed in Oakland as the "Bash Brothers," leading the team to three straight World Series appearances from 1988-90, including the 1989 title. Canseco won the 1988 AL MVP award and has 462 homers, 26th on the career list.

Canseco admitted in 2002 that he used steroids during his career. He served jail time for violating terms of his probation for a 2001 fight at a Miami Beach, Fla., nightclub. His rap sheet includes domestic violence and aggravated battery charges.

i have never seen a baseball hit an outfielder's melon harder than that one ball that slammed off canseco's head and over the fence for the cheapest homerun of all-time.

Hardest hit ball I have ever seen was a frozen rope rapped by Harmon Killerbrew at Fenway park in the very early 70's. Yaz used to line up on the dirt of the warning track in left when Killerbrew came up. On this occasion The Fat Kid, as he was affectionately called hit a liner straight at Yaz, who barely had enough time to get his glove up to around his eyes to snag the ball for an out. The ball was nearly invisible in flight, or at least that is how it seemed.

The moon launch shot Canseco put into the upper upper deck in Toronto off Flanagan is the furthest ball I have ever seen hit...it was on the old Saturday Game of The Week..

Strange, how he is coming out of retirement now. Right in the middle of a steroid controversy. You would think he would have a better shot to make an AL team as a DH. All he can do in LA is pinch-hit.

I forgot who was pitching but Ive never seen a ball hit like that. I'm pretty sure were talking about the same HR.

It was still going up as it hit the 3rd deck in the Skydome.

I'm 37, but remember Dave King Kong Kingman with shot that left Detroit's Tiger Stadium on an NBC Game Of The Week, as a kid.

Saw some infamous Stargell shots, and a few Cobra blasts.

Remember a few Greg "Bull" Luzinski shots at the Vet.

But that laser Canseco did in the playoffs at Toronto, has to be one of the best combos of fastest/hardest/distance bombs ever?..driving range rip!

I would love to see him come back and kick some ass.

I dont know why but for some reason he sems larger than life when he steps up to the plate. He is always a thrill to watch and yes he can nail the hell out of a ball.

I have no doubt he still has it in him. The question is whether or not he can still run the bases...
