An Arena Football League team has put itself up for sale on the auction website eBay.
The Indiana Firebirds are up for sale on eBay with a minimum bid of $1 million.
Wednesday, Firebirds owner Dave Lageschulte said that the AFL franchise has been shut down after four years in Indianapolis and that he was seeking new ownership for the team.
Lageschulte estimated the team's losses in his two years of ownership at "several million" dollars.
"It's a great sport, and I love it, but it just didn't work out," he said.
Firebirds general manager John Kolner said the league told him it is extending the deadline for a potential buyer to Sept. 20. However, since Lageschulte is ceasing operation of Lags Football, LLC, which ran the team, only the rights to the team are for sale.
"The team has ceased operations and the staff is no longer employed," Kolner said. "Hopefully some sort of local ownership can be found in the next week."
According to the Indianapolis Star, the AFL was not amused by the Firebirds' unique efforts to find a new owner.
"Desperate men do desperate things," AFL VP/Communications Chris McCloskey said. "Frankly, if eBay can produce an applicant with a net worth of $60 million by Sept. 20, we'll consider that application."
AFL rules state that an owner must have $60 million in net worth and be approved by 75 percent of the league's board of directors.
"We thought that this was the best way to market the team," said Rich Simeone, general counsel for Lageschulte's business interests, said of selling the team on eBay. "We're not here to waste time and we hope someone comes through."
