A while back, when there was an Entertainment forum, there was a thread about great debut albums. It slipped my mind at the time, but I have to say without hesitation that in 1980 Jim Carroll made one of the greatest debut albums ever ("Catholic Boy").
Most probably know him as the guy who wrote the autobiographical "Basketball Diaries" and that Leonardo DiCaprio played him in the movie of the same name.
His band only played a handful of gigs in and around 1980 and I was able to go to one in West Hartford (Dec 1980). Some years later (early 90's) I went to a poetry reading of his and got to have a brief chat afterward. Here's a few cuts that didn't get much airplay (if any) from his first record:
