Undertaker was legitimally hurt & decided to drop the title. Mr. Kennedy was in line for a huge push to begin with. However with the injury, there was some talk of making it even faster.
Mr. Kennedy got injured at a house show in Poughkeepsie, NY I believe. His injury was originally supposed to have him out 5-7 months. However it turns out it is not as serious as they originally thought. I'm not sure what they will do now that he won't be out as long as they thought he would.
Obviously something big is going to happen on Smackdown this week. I won't spoil it but it isn't too hard to figure out.

No, he was not supposed to lose. Actually this was supposed to be his longest title reign by far. He got back into shape for his lengthy run which included appearing on Smackdown more as well as many more house shows. I'll post spoilers way below this message.
Undertaker is obviously losing the title as he will be out for a # of months. Batista is not winning the title on Smackdown either. The match will end in a draw as both escaped at the same time. Assume some editing will happen as it looked like Undertaker technically made it out first. Anyhow Mark Henry will appear & take Taker out. Edge will appear & cash in his MITB & win the World Heavyweight Championship.
The original plan after the Taker injury was diagnosed as needing surgery by Dr. James Andrews was for him to lose it to Mr. Kennedy. Mr. K was going to come out & cash it in after the Batista-Taker steel cage match & win it. With his injury, they turned to Edge.
