Death tolls will be EASILY over 3,000 after you factor in 1 month deaths from disease!

not that u can compare the two at all...they are equally as bad.....one part about this hurricane though is that people in NY could go to the bathroom, get a glass of water, eat in their kitchen, sleep in their beds, go to the store, etc the next day. Nobody will be doing any of this for MONTHS in New Orleans. An entire city has been wiped off the map, not a few buildings. Long term effects, I would say NY just a little bit worse since we had to go to war over it however this gas thing may get outta hand here.

Both events, very very bad. One is worst terrorism event ever on US soil, the other is worst natural disaster ever!

People fail to understand that its not just New Orleans. Every city in Louisiana south of New Orleans is just as bad. Venice Louisiana is now history!!!!!!! It will not even be on the next map when it comes out. This is much worse than 9/11 for many reasons.

Death toll when you add the people in Louisiana and Mississippi will exceed 10000 at the very least!!!! These death are just confirmed deaths. There were over 100000 thousand people that stayed for the storm at least in New Orleans alone. If just 10% of these people died thats 10000 people. They rescue workers are so booked up that they do not even have time to go rescue the thousands of people trapped in there attics. There are no phone lines. A dead person cant make a phone call telling everyone that they are dead. I promise you there is anywhere from 10000 to 50000 deaths from this storm. If you dont believe that you will be in for a huge shock in a few weeks.

9/11 ruined the economy, changed our way of life, killed thousands of people, made things like the Patriot Act acceptable,.....not even comparable.

dont discount that this might have a slower trickle effect to ruin the economy. It only takes big business to start to slow down and pull back spending and investment due to the disturbances, oil prices, fear, etc. to mess up everything.

Id say we are on the edge of a major effect ont he economy especially if another major hurricane hits the USA this season.

I hear that on CNN all the time disease running rampant, is that true? What disease and how many people does it effect? The news always says that but there is never any follow up or support to the disease is running rampant. :icon_conf

Good points. Not to mention no one was faced with "jump or burn"

not true at some point thousands were faced with JUMP/SWIM or drown.

Id say many more in N.O. than on the top floors of trade towers

No disrespect to the victims of 911 but Katrina's devastation is considerably worse. 911's effect were initially felt for just a few blocks of New York. You're talking about 2 STATES that are completely anhiliated. Not only that but the effect has trickled onto neighboring states. Texas will eventually be housing over a quarter of a million refugees. I live here in Houston and the Astrodome area, at least for the first few days, has been in complete disarray. Buses lined up in the hundreds are being turned away due to spacing.

Time heals wounds, this is fresh in our memory, JAPAN was rebuilt, and that hopefully will never be matched.
