If you make you play as listed pitchers it says Jones and Smith must start. Lets say that the road team bats around in the top of the first inning and their pitcher - Jones gets to bat. However, he gets injured on the first pitch Smith throws to him and Jones has to leave the game. Therefore in the bottom of the first the road team starts a new pitcher. Would Jones still be considered the starting pitcher although he never threw a pitch ?

Interesting question. I would think he would still be considered the starter since he participated in the game.

However, in the end there is probably no written rule either way. In that type of situation, many sportsbooks rule in their own favor.

i believe the starting pitchers are the pitchers listed officially WHEN THE FIRST PITCH OF THE GAME IS THROWN. so the play should have stood in my opinion.

If it says "must pitch" then he must pitch.

I could see this happening in a pennant race. The visitors go off and score 10 runs in the first inning. Lets say its the Cubs and Kerry Wood is scheduled to go (he hit in the top 1st).

If I was the manager I'd say, Kerry we need you tomorrow. One of our september callups will now pitch for us (presuming a collection of minor leaguers and long relief can hold a ten run lead).

I hadnt even considered that but that very well could happen. If the Cubs got up 8-0 in thge first it would be smart to hold Wood back. Although I dont think this scenario has ever happened it would be interesting to see how the books would rule.

must pitch to have action, the rule states in Vegas:


Baseball wagers will be accepted in any of the following manners:

Action - Team against team, regardless of the starting pitcher.

One specified pitcher - This is a wager on or against on specified pitcher, regardless of the other starting pitcher.

Both specified pitchers - If starting pitchers are not exactly as quoted, your wager will be deemed 'no action'.

Note: IN the event there is a pitching change prior to the game, money odds may be adjusted. If one scheduled pitcher starts against an unscheduled pitcher, 'action' wagers will be computed by the opening price with the new pitcher.



A pitcher is deemed a starting pitcher after throwing one pitch.

this happens often in rain delays too, I remember glavine getting pulled before a start vs. the yanks earlier this year.
