Kirby Lee/USA TODAY SportsAfter a record-setting September for the books, the bettors had a big winning Sunday.
Count Las Vegas sports books among those displeased with
Jay Cutler.
The
Green Bay Packers' 55-14 blowout of Cutler and the
Chicago Bears capped the worst Sunday of the NFL season for Las Vegas sports books.
An hour before kickoff, the MGM sports book had taken eight times more money on the Packers than the underdog Bears.
Sports book operator CG Technology took around a $250,000 hit on parlay and teasers bets that included the Packers and the over, according to vice president of race and sports Jason Simbal.
The Westgate SuperBook and the Stratosphere and Aliante sports books also were lopsided with Green Bay and over action and suffered what each described as the worst Sunday of the season.
"Anytime there is a long line for the Sunday night game, you know the book had a bad day," Marc Nelson, sports book director at the Aliante Casino, said.
Favorites went 9-3 against the spread Sunday, the usual recipe for disaster for the books. It could have been worse. The underdog
New York Jets' 20-13 upset of the
Pittsburgh Steelers was the books' savior.
"That was the only game we won," Hugh Citron, Stratosphere sports book manager, said.
The Jets' win was a big decision, but not nearly big enough. The
Kansas City Chiefs and
San Francisco 49ers were the only other underdogs to cover the spread. All three favorites in the late afternoon games -- the
Seattle Seahawks,
Arizona Cardinals and
Denver Broncos -- covered and kept a bevy public parlay bets alive heading into night game.
Aaron Rodgers and the Packers dashed the books' hopes early, jumping out to a 42-0 halftime lead. Cutler completed 22-of-37 passes with a touchdown and two interceptions. Cutler is now 1-11 straight-up against the Packers as a starter, 2-10 against the spread.
Never fear, though, the books will remain open. Nevada sports books won $37.27 million off of football in September, the third-most lucrative football month ever.
