...from Rays television broadcaster Dewayne Statts as Bossman Upton is called out at first base after beating a play and overrunning first with NO move towards second.

Umpire Meals calls him SAFE! with big arm wave and then when Napoli tags him near the foul line where he is standing completely still, Meals rings him up for making an attempt towards second. Hopefully will get a YouTube video of this one as they have replayed it about ten times.

Maddon tossed and he visibly got off some major FUCK YOUR ?? to both the first base ump (Meals) and the home plate umpire.

Ump probably taking a shot at Upton for dogging it all the time.

I saw that play and I agree it was ridiculous to say he started towards 2nd. I was thinking maybe he never stepped on the bag because he swerved to avoid the tag. The later replays didn't show whether or not the foot touched the bag and the announcers said nothing about that.

If that's not the issue, then I agree the call was totally asinine, and I was rooting for the Angels heh.

Saw it also. Bullsh!t call.

So that's where former Yankee announcer Dewayne Statts is, Tampa/St. Pete.

The 1B ump signaled SAFE!!! very dramatically, so no doubt (in his mind at least) that Upton touched the bag.

Maddon discussed it in postgame interview and made clear the call was a result of BJ supposedly making a move towards second.

Further postgame analysis had the guys reading the exact rule which mandates the "runner must immediately return to first base" after legally overrunning it. But by the standard applied tonight by Meals, 75% of "safe" runners at first would then get tagged out.

Fun Fact - Statts is Rays' RP Dan Wheeler's father in law

Wow, just saw this on SportsCenter. Terrible call.

The umpire crew chief said he has called players out for much less.:think2:

I have watched alot of baseball the last 2 years and the umpiring is a complete joke.

The other night in the White Sox game Dye hit a ball down the left field line and he knew it was out. He stood at the plate hoping it would be fair. The ball was completely foul and Dye saw it was foul and got ready to bat.

The umpire signalled fair. You should have seen Dye's face.

The umpires huddled and overturned the call.

This ball was a good 10 feet foul.

way overstated and too dramatic.

how about the Jeffrey Maier call? Don Denkinger? AJ Preisenski get first after a clear strike out? and these are just a few that come to mind right away. I'm sure I can come up w/many more if I give more thought.
