BREAKING NEWS: (Updated 1:15 p.m.) When the Iowa football team tries to snap a two-game losing streak Saturday against Northern Illinois, it will do so without starting quarterback Drew Tate on the field.
The senior is not listed on the Hawkeyes’ two-deep roster for the 11 a.m. home game after suffering a hand injury during the opening quarter of last weekend’s loss at Michigan.
Tate landed awkwardly on his left hand after being dropped for a 12-yard loss. Following a timeout, he returned to the field with his hand and thumb wrapped and fumbled on Iowa’s next snap.
The injury did not preclude Tate from completing the game against the second-ranked Wolverines, although X-rays were taken of the hand immediately following the game.
“I’m not sure what, but something’s not right,’’ Tate said after the game.
Coach Kirk Ferentz labeled the injury “significant’’ on his weekly television program, saying that it was likely that Tate would miss playing time.
Senior Jason Manson, who started in Tate’s absence in Iowa’s double-overtime win over Syracuse, and redshirt freshman Jake Christensen share the top spot at quarterback on the depth chart Iowa released Monday for this week’s game against the Huskies (5-3).
Manson has completed 18-of-36 passes for 210 yards this season and was intercepted four times in his only career start at Syracuse, while Christensen is 3-of-3 passing in limited late-game action.
Two other Hawkeyes injured in the Michigan game, cornerback Adam Shada and fullback Champ Davis, are also missing from this week’s depth chart.
Bradley Fletcher, a sophomore, is listed as the replacement for Shada, who suffered an ankle injury, while sophomores Jordan McLaughlin of Belmond, Iowa, and Eddie Williams of Rock Island are listed to replace Davis as the back-up to Tom Busch at fullback
