Word is Materazzi crossed the line with some of his remarks...telling Zidane that he hopes him and his mother die(she's in the hospital, gravely ill, death looming). He also called Zidane's father a traitor to Algeria(forget the exact term that was used, but it meant an Algerian who fought for France against the Algeria). Also referred to Zidane's sister as a whore/prostitute.

Zidane will explain what happened later this week.

Wow, Zidane's mother was interviewed and this is what she said on the incident:

“I am utterly disgusted by what I have heard. I praise my son for defending his family’s honour. No one should be subjected to such foul insults on or off the football pitch and I don’t care if it was a World Cup Final. I have nothing but contempt for Materazzi and, if what he said is true, then I want his balls on a platter."

Got to attend the final Sunday. Unreal energy and by far the most exciting event I've ever been too. Nearly the entire crowd had no idea why Zidane was sent off and after that every nuetral fan became a France supporter and booed Italy evertime they touched the ball

How is the keeper in the hunt? I'd assume that the 2nd place vote-getter woulc be given the award...Buffon didn't even finish third.

The Azzurri 'keeper and Captain are still in the hunt.

They should split the award.... between the ref who handed the Italians a victory over Australia in the 93rd minute and the ref who stole a victory from Germany over Italy in the 80th minute when a foul was called (clearly inside the box) and only a free kick was given.

It's time FIFA went to a two-referee system or better yet, implemented video replay. The 2002 World Cup wasn't much different. Way too many games were decided by controversial/pathetic referee decisions.

Zidane made his comments...but still didn't tell us what exactly was said. All he said was that the insults were directed towards his mother and sister, and that they were very provocative.

FIFA has NO intentions of stripping Z or tarnishing / scandalizing the game...they are looking to see if further penalties vs others are in order...OR just cursorily doing it to do away with / while the furor goes down.
