The wonderlic is a test of intelligence and the ability to use one's knowledge to solve problems. It is widely used along with employment applications in lots of places. The wonderlic consists of 50 questions with 12 minutes to answer. (Less than 5% finish the test) The score is graded one point per correct answer. A score of 20 is average for a person with an IQ of 100. (average intelligence) A score of 10 is considered to be the minimum score that indicates literacy.

Here are a few notable scores...

4 - Morris Claiborne (CB LSU - 2012) posted a mighty 4 on his wonderlic. The NFL has been tight about releasing this information which leaked out anyway.

6 - Vince Young (QB TX - 2006) set an NFL combine record for achieving a score of 6 on his wonderlic. 21 is generally considered to be the minimum acceptable wonderlic score for a quarterback. (However Dan Marino's wonderlic score was just 16.) Young's 6 was an NFL combine record for a low score at the time.

7 - Terrelle Pryor (QB tOSU - 2010) didn't approve of his first wonderlic score being released. (7) He'd rather you go by his own report of scoring a 22 on his second try the following day. (I didn't get a 2nd shot when I took the test. Most people don't.)

9 - Carlos Hyde (WR tOSU - 2014) 2nd round pick this year by the SF 49ers.

You have to ask what did Texas and (at least) LSU do to keep Young and Clayborne in school?

Some better scores:

32 - Johnny Manziel (QB TAMU - 2014)
28 - Blake Bortles (QB USF - 2014)
20 - Teddy Bridgewater (QB - Louisville - 2014)

Current NFL QB's top wonderlic scores:

40 - Alex Smith - Utah (KC Chiefs)
38 - Andrew Luck - Stanford (Indianapolis Colts)
38 - Colin Kaepernick - Nevada (SF 49ers)

Best all time:

50 - Pat McInally - Harvard (PK Cincinnati Bengals 1975) The only 50 ever scored in NFL combine history.
One with a score of 49
Two with a score of 48
Lots in between
43 Greg McElroy - Alabama (QB NY Jets - 2011) Led ther tide to NC in 2010 and perfect 14-0 record

Here's a trivia question you might find interesting:

What position on the field has the highest average wonderlic score? (scroll down)

26 Average, offensive tackle (source for all)

No one has ever accused Johnny Football of being dumb. The kid has some smarts...he just acts like a dumbass on occasion.

Most people don't realize offensive line is one of the most difficult positions to play in big time football. You don't see many freshman start on the offensive line compared to freshmen starting on the defensive line.

I'm guessing I could go over to the local Middle School and pick out a 7th grader who could score 5 on the test...and these are "college student athletes" with the four, five, etc. scores. Pitiful!

just read that benjamin had been held back twice and is now already 23 years old ... and, yeah, he left school two years early (guess he didn't want to be that rare 25 year old senior). so probably shouldn't be shocked that he popped a 7 on the wundy but guess you don't have to know your times tables to be a millionaire

i'll give him 3 years before he shoots himself in the thigh dancing with a loaded pistol in his sweat pants

100% of the 70% have (ex) wives that are smarter. Yeap.
The Wonderlic establishes that way before anyone sees it.

said broke-ass agents for Terrelle Pryor, Vincy Young, Jeff George, Akili Smith, and Kordell Stewart :)

if you can't post at least a 10 or 11 (which is the breaking point for literacy) you'll have a lot of trouble in a league with the size of playbooks in the NFL. maybe CB can get by being complete dumbasses but that's about it

Anyone know how many years a player has to be in the NFL to qualify for a pension?

I'm thinking five but not certain.

a) highly doubt kelvin benjamin-like kids would even comprehend a money management class if they can't spell cat
b) while not fully a sport issue it is an epidemic among these athletes at a far higher rate, i would guess, than C-level folks and other millionaires. 78% in nfl is ridiculous

[h=1]78% of NFL Players Go Bankrupt Within 5 Years & NBA Players In…[/h] January 16, 2014
The average professional athlete in the U.S. will make more in one season than most of us earn in our entire lives….[yet,] despite those staggering salaries, 78% of NFL players, 60% of NBA players and a very large percentage of MLB players (4x that of the average U.S. citizen) file bankruptcy within five years of retirement.

I was reading an article today about how the Philadelphia Eagles are looking for more college graduates in the draft. HC Kelly said that after doing extensive research on past NFL playoff teams, found out that the most successful teams had many college graduates on them. He said that the trend over the last 5 years is startling. Studies showed that teams who select players who spent 5 years in college-and thus almost always had a degree-win big. Of the three teams with the most fifth-year seniors drafted, two of them (Seattle, Denver) met in this last Super Bowl. The Jackson Jaguars 4-12, took the fewest fifth year seniors. Kelly's thinking in this (and what has pretty much been proven) is a degree is much more than a proof of intelligence, it's also about their commitment. These kinds of players set goals for themselves and they follow through with them. Tony Dungy then threw in his two cents with his own research and found that players with college degrees were more likely to earn a second NFL contract and make more money. He told Kelly that these guys with degrees are what you are looking for. They are driven. If it's between two players, a degree could very well tip the scales. If you want to see the types of players who AREN'T going bankrupt, the college grads are the best example. Even if they spend a little too much money at the beginning buying houses, cars etc. when they first come into the league, it's usually that second big contract that sets them up for life.
