Wondering when Ohio State implodes, has Urban Meyer ever called his own plays as a Head Coach?

The more I watch this team the more confused I get. From a talent standpoint they can line up and play with anyone as they proved last year. I still have mixed feelings on Urban Meyer.

UM does a great job of mentally preparing his team when it has the us vs the world mentality, playing with a chip on their shoulder. They have been their own worst enemy this year. It is evident the kids think they are invincible the way they are playing. Defensively, I think they have played OK. Offensively they are a mess and I blame the coaches not the players. He has made enough comments over the years that I know he understands the X's and O's and what should and should not be done.

All off season everyone talked about the QB’s, my biggest concern was the OC , replacing Herman and the decisions Meyer was making. They hired Beck as new QB coach/Co-OC after they promoted the O Line coach to OC, Ed Warinner. I believe Beck was hired because what they lost in Herman beyond the OC was a recruiter from the Texas area, Beck filled that void. I believe up until this past weekend Beck had zero to do with play calling. Prior to this weekend they were a wreck on the field making adjustments with the O Line, as the position coach was in the press box calling plays and they had a huge void on the side line. This past week Warinner left the press box and returned to the side lines calling plays while being there for the O Line when they came off the field, Beck was involved with the O visibly for the first time. I think they still failed as a group.

I can’t help but wonder why UM just does not do the play calling as he is barking the whole game when the O is on the Field. Beck and Warinner are trying to call an offense they have never run and I think Beck is still trying to learn it. Warinner needs to be making adjustments with O Line not worried about play calling.
Meyer has made a mess out of the situation and I think the only thing that can get the wheels moving again is if he assumes play calling, if not they will continue to struggle as everything appears to be one big cluster fuck…

So my question is does anyone know if, as a head coach, did Um ever call his own plays whether at BG, Utah, or Florida?

The playing with a chip on your shoulder ends in negativity. If that is what's happening and things snowball against you, then things can get dark.

Tim Beck as qb coach is not good. I cant say he's snakebit the qb group, but I dont have faith that he could improve it. He's a hot and cold play caller, but at nebraska he had a really athletic qb that started 3.5 years (2.5 under beck) and he couldnt harness him into a better player. The same qb nebraska has now has was under beck for 1.5 years and he was solid, but in 9 months under real guidance, while changing drastically the scheme, he's transformed to among the conference's best and perhaps upper tier in the nation.

I think losing the oc and picking up beck was a huge loss-loss.

Also, i dont think many coaches call their own plays. It's added risk and consumes time from the ceo role.

I agree with HC/CEO but I think they have huge problems and might be only solution. One would think all this would have been thought through before the season, it's a serious problem for them IMO. Might be best to just let Beck run O if not UM. W/O o line coach on sideline addressing that group it is a mess right now. Will be curious to see what happens this week as I don't see things getting any better.

I think we are fine....

I know for a fact that the coaches have not been happy with the urgency the team has been playing with. The only game they were up for was Va Tech. This team knows how good they are, which could bite us in the butt. I'll admit that its Urbans Job to make sure that these guys are up for every game. Sticking with one QB is going to improve the offense I think. I'm looking forward to seeing what we do on the road Saturday.

I've been saying since the summer that Barrett is the QB choice. Jones had his moment when nobody had film on him. He's got a big arm, but it doesn't fit the scheme, imo.

Oh, and don't forget my warning about Tim Beck.

The good news is that nobody looks really good in the Big Ten East. Michigan still doesn't have a QB.

i agree about CJ and yes you did warn all about Beck. It's amazing how much changes in one year.. Them scoring 2 TD to make it 27-17 means nothing more then the athletic players making plays.. They are lost on O.. Hard to watch.
