2003 Record: 4-0 (+9.40 units)
Venus Williams -450
Amelie Mauresmo +325
this match starts sunday @ 1P (Poland time) which translates into 4A (PDT - you do the math for others parts of the country - i live in CA so the only time zone i use/care about is PDT)
once again - for this play i have to thank those who voted in a poll at the wta's official site. in that poll that asked who would win this tourney, the #1 choice was mauresmo @ 28% (last i looked), while venus was dead last of the 5 choices @ 7% with over 68,000 votes. however, a current poll there now asking who will win between these 2 has it 64%-36% in favor of venus (with less than 600 votes so far).
this match pits the 2 top seeds (#1 venus) and 2 of the top ranked women's players on the tour (venus #3/mauresmo #7). mauresmo will NOT come in here afraid of venus unlike most players who face the williams' "brothers."
venus 6'1", 160 while mauresmo is 5'9", 152 so the disparity between the 2 is not a big as venus normally has it. having seen mauresmo in the past, this is one buff chick and i think this will help, she has the power to match venus and maybe even surpass her.
venus has been really struggling in this tourney against much lesser competition than mauresmo and i think this is where she gets beaten while mauresmo has played tougher competition and has had more success.
this tourney is played on clay and i LOVE to pick against americans on clay when they are facing someone from another country - since that player usually has more experience on clay and it shows in the match. put this match on a hard surface and i might even take venus - but i feel the slow clay greatly helps mauresmo and hurts venus. amelie is unbeaten on clay this year while this is the 1st time venus is on this surface this seaon.
i will say i am making this play with a tiny bit of worry aboutr mauresmo's health. she has had withdraw from a few matches this year and even retire from one so i am a tad worried she might not finish the match - but from all indications she appears to be the healthiest she has been all year and i do think she will hold up thru this one.
i see this being a real tossup match so taking the dog here at a nice price is too good to pass up - so i won't!
