Toronto won 2 of 3 games in this series; Angels were 1-28 with runners in scoring position.
Hunter Renfroe was 3-4 in this game, with a homer and three RBI.

— Orioles 9, New York 3
Baltimore scored six runs before they made an out.
Orioles lead the AL East by 1.5 games.

— Mets 5, Nationals 2
Justin Verlander won his 250th career game.
Mets are 6.5 games out of the last playoff spot.

— Next year, Max Scherzer is going to make a lot of $$$, from all different places:
$15M from Washington
$15M from Texas, who he will pitch for
$28M from the Mets……..$58M in all next season.

Interesting note on Scherzer; by moving from New York to Texas, he will pay roughly $3M less in taxes from now until the end of the 2024 season.

— Pirates 6, Phillies 4 (10)
Josh Palacios hit a walk-off home run on his birthday, the first major leaguer to do that since Andruw Jones, in 2010.

— Rockies 2, A’s 0— They had 31,789 fans in Denver for this game, first time in their last 16 home games the Rockies drew less than 36,000 fans.

Amazing support from their fanbase, considering the Rockies are such a cruddy team- they lost two of three this weekend to the lowly A’s.

— Baseball trades:
Rockies dealt 1B CJ Cron, OF Randall Grichuk to the Angels for two prospects.
Cardinals dealt P’s Jordan Montgomery/Chris Stratton to Texas, for three prospects.
St Louis also dealt P Jordan Hicks to Toronto, for two prospects.

— Newly-acquired Noah Syndergaard will start for the Guardians Monday night in Houston.

— Movie of the Day: Lost In Translation (2003)— A movie star on the down side of his career and a neglected young woman become unlikely friends after crossing paths in Tokyo.

Bill Murray is the actor, who is getting paid $2M to do whiskey commercials in Tokyo. Scarlett Johansson is the young woman; her husband is a photographer in Tokyo, but he goes all over Japan to do his work and leaves her behind.

After a few chance encounters in the hotel, Murray/Johansson end up spending much of their time hanging out together, each helping the other deal with their feelings of loss in their current lives. The friendship that develops between the two is unusual and complicated.

This is a fun movie to watch; Bill Murray is good as a serious actor, too.

— College Football Trend of the Day: In seven years under Kalani Sitake, BYU is 12-4 ATS as a road dog.

— With QB Joe Burrow banged up, Cincinnati Bengals signed another QB, Reid Sinnett, who most recently played for the San Antonio Brahmas of the XFL. Sinnett will the Bengals’ #3 QB in camp, behind Trevor Siemian and Jake Browning.

Sinnett played college ball at U of San Diego; the Toreros, not the Aztecs. He was on the Eagles’ active roster for 10 games in 2021, but never got into a game.

— Colts’ rookie QB Anthony Richardson has gained 11 pounds since the NFL Combine three months ago; early returns on the QB have been mostly positive, except for his struggles with accuracy, which is kind of important for a quarterback.

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings……..

— Astros 2, Guardians 0
Framber Valdez threw a no-hitter for Houston, throwing 93 pitches.
Big day for the Astros, getting Justin Verlander back, and then the no-hitter.

— Verlander makes $43M a year; if he throws 140+ innings next year, his $35M option for 2025 automatically kicks in.

— August 1, 1978, Pete Rose had his 44-game hitting streak stopped by the Phillies; ironically, he signed with Philadelphia as a free agent that next winter.

That August night was a fun one for me; I was visiting my cousin in Brooklyn for the weekend, and we went out that night to Catch a Rising Star, a club that was famous for starting the careers of many popular singers/comedians. They had pictures up on the walls of all the famous people who had performed there.

I was 18 at the time; this was a whole new world to me. The MC was Richard Belzer, who later became well-known as an actor on the Law and Order shows; he was a comedian at the time. He was busting chops with couple guys in the audience, and I’m sitting there terrified that he will start busting my chops. I didn’t realize the two guys were friends of his, part of the act.

Later on, a young lady comes out to sing; she was really good. It was Pat Benatar, who went on to have a great career as a singer, but she was just breaking into the business back then— she was 25 at the time.

Anyway, was reminded of that today. Always good to remember the fun times.

Tuesday was baseball’s trade deadline. Some thoughts:
— Mets traded Verlander to Houston, Tommy Pham to Arizona.

Mets started this year with a payroll of $356,879,103; in the last week, they’ve shed a lot of payroll obligations:

Verlander $43,333,333
Max Scherzer $43,333,333
Mark Canha $11,500,000
David Robertson $10,000,000
Pham $6,000,000

All that adds up to $114,167,000 that has come off the Mets’ books, pro-rated, of course.

— Mets’ GM Billy Eppler said this:
“We won’t have the same [World Series] odds in 2024, but we’ll put together a competitive team.”

Wonder what his boss thinks of that statement.

— As of 7pm Tuesday night, White Sox had traded away pitchers who accounted for 41.2% of their innings pitched so far this season.

— San Diego Padres are having a rough year; they’re 0-10 in extra inning games, 6-18 in one-run games. Xander Bogaerts is 0-11 this year with the bases loaded.

Their loss Monday night in Denver was horrific; down by a run in the 8th inning, Padres had guys on 1st/2nd with one out. Bogaerts gets a clutch hit to centerfield, but the third base coach sends Juan Soto home, and the CF throws him out at the plate, by 20-30 feet. Not good.

Maybe the worst decision I’ve ever seen by a third base coach; they wound up losing in extra innings, another agonizing loss in a rough season.

— Despite that, Padres traded for P Rich Hill, 1B Ji-Man Choi Tuesday, so they’re still trying.

— Padres 8, Rockies 5— Juan Soto hit two homers for San Diego Tuesday night.

— Cardinals traded P Jack Flaherty to Baltimore; this is interesting because Flaherty has allowed a .346 batting average on balls in play — worst in the majors among pitchers with 80+ innings pitched. His ERA is 3.45 in his last 12 starts, which is an improvement; we’ll see.

— Detroit’s Eduardo Rodriguez has a 10-team no-trade list; the Dodgers are on it. Detroit tried to trade him to the Dodgers anyway, but Rodriguez vetoed the deal, and LA acquired Ryan Yarbrough from the Royals instead.

Who doesn’t want to play for the Dodgers? Apparently Rodriguez doesn’t want to play on the west coast; too far away from his family, but jeez, you’re rich, bring the family out with you.

— Phillies 3, Marlins 1— Sandy Alcantara threw 8 shutout IP, but then Miami’s bullpen screwed the game up in the 9th inning. Marlins made several moves; will be interesting to see what they look like when the dust clears this weekend.

— Movie of the Day: Any Given Sunday (1999)— A pro football team with a veteran coach and an aging QB try to hang on and make the playoffs. When the QB gets hurt, then his backup also gets hurt, the 3rd-string QB comes in and things get very interesting.

Al Pacino is the coach; Dennis Quaid/Jamie Foxx are the QB’s, Cameron Diaz is the team’s owner, James Woods is the team doctor, Charlton Heston is the commissioner of the league.

Excellent movie; Lawrence Taylor is good in his role, basically playing himself. I could write about this movie for a week, but I’ll add this— the four coaches the Miami Sharks go against in this movie are all real-life Hall of Famers:

Dick Butkus, Bob St Clair, YA Tittle, Johnny Unitas.

— College Football Trend of the Day: Favorites won/covered the last four Las Vegas Bowls.

— Phillies acquired P Michael Lorenzen from Detroit; unclear if the Phillies will go to a 6-man rotation, or use Lorenzen in relief, or use Cristopher Sanchez in relief, but someone once said that you can never have enough pitching.

— A’s actually traded two more players, not that it matters; they dealt P Sam Moll to the Reds, 3B Jace Peterson to Arizona.

— Speaking of the Reds; they have a legit chance to make the playoffs, but they desperately need pitching, and they didn’t add any starters— Moll is a mediocre lefty reliever.

Cubs 20, Reds 9— Cincinnati left starter Lively in until he gave up 13 runs; 15 of the 27 batters he faced reached base. Reds have an abundance of position players; they should’ve made some kind of move to improve their pitching.

— We’ll close today with this, my annual reminder that the Baltimore Ravens try to win their preseason games; they’ve won their last 23 exhibition games SU, are 26-5 ATS in their last 31 summer games.

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud…….

— Cubs 16, Reds 6— Cincinnati didn’t add pitching at the trade deadline, then they gave up 36 runs in the first two games after the deadline. Not good. Reds still lead the division by half a game, but they need to tighten up— they made four errors in this game.

— Texas 11, White Sox 1
Dylan Cease faced 16 hitters, threw 79 pitches; he only got five outs, giving up seven runs.
Corey Seager homered in his first at-bat off the injured list.

— New York 7, Tampa Bay 2– New York is 9-0 in Gerrit Cole’s starts if they lost their previous game; they’re 6-7 in Cole’s starts if they won their previous game.

— Royals 4, Mets 0
Kansas City has won five games in a row.
Mets had nine hits, but didn’t score; they were 2-12 with RISP, but neither hit scored a run.

— Astros 3, Guardians 2— Chas McCormick hit two more homers for surging Houston.

— Movie of the Day: Leap of Faith (1992)— A traveling preacher and his entourage are stranded in a small town where he finds he can’t fool all of the people all of the time.

Steve Martin is the preacher; he is great in this. Debra Winger is his assistant, Liam Nissan plays the local sheriff, Meat Loaf and Philip Seymour Hoffman play part of his entourage.

I’ve been a big Steve Martin fan since I saw him on the Tonight Show back when I was a little kid; Buddy Hackett was guest host that night. He is a great comedian, but also an excellent actor, an underrated talent.

— College Football Trend of the Day: Since 2014, Cal Bears are 23-12 ATS as a road underdog.

— Braves 12, Angels 5— Rough start for Lucas Giolito in his new home; he’s allowed 12 runs in 9 IP in his first two starts for the Halos.

— Marlins 9, Phillies 8 (12)
Miami trailed 5-2 in 8th inning, 7-5 in 10th inning.
Marlins are 24-9 in one-run games.
Josh Bell went 4-5 with a home run in his Marlins debut.

— NFL is apparently considering flexing the Week 5 Jets-Broncos game to a Sunday night tilt, after Sean Payton’s comments about the Jets last week. They’d have to bump a Cowboys-49ers game out of primetime to a 4:25 start, which seems unlikely— Dallas gets big ratings.

— NFL is also considering changing the kickoff rules down the road, making kickoffs like the ones in the XFL, where the teams line up five yards apart, but no one can move until the kicker kicks the football.

This rule works well in the XFL; you get some decent returns, and fewer violent collisions.

— There is an NFL game on TV tonight, Jets-Browns from the Hall of Fame in Canton, OH, a virtual home game for Cleveland. Aaron Rodgers will be there, but he ain’t playing.
