With the year Kitna had last year, why bench him before the season starts?

This is one mistake I think they Bengals may be making. Kitna had a solid year last year. Why not name him starting QB before Palmer? Grant it, they have money invest and he is the franchise player, but Kitna had MVP status last year.

I would leave it open and let them compete in training camp.

Palmer is still young, and has plenty of time.

I agree, they made strides last year, no reason for a change.Similar situation in Tampa. Chris Simms looks as if he will be special, but Brad Johnson is the man for now.....

Kitna doesn't have much left, putting Palmer to learn right now while they have a backup QB that they know they can rely on is priceless.
What would happen if they let Kitna play 2 more years, maybe making it to the playoffs and then taking an even bigger step back putting Palmer to start with no solid backup?
I think swallowing the pill now is far better than "play it safe".
Also, Kitna had his best year last year and the Bengals still didn't made to the playoffs.

Don, I disagree somewhat, mainly because of the suffering Bengal fans have endured for years. They finally make a push, and now insert Palmer and take a huge risk on going backwards......

Bengals now have a Monday night game, and Sunday night. Starting to feel good being a Bengals fan again. Plus they have sold out 6 games already!

It`s all about the money. As a #1 pick now, you only have a short time to learn because of the huge salaries.

Hache, was is a bigger risk, making two more pushes to the playoffs and falling short, and then back to mediocrity a couple of years with a QB who doesn;t have a start? Or taking the risk right now that the gamble is not that big?
Poor Bengals even have the county trying to sue them, they need to keep the process, not stumble up and down for even more years.
And i also think that Palmer is going to be far better then what Kitna is right now, might as well start developing the kid.

judge, at least they tried to avoid the fiascos they had with Kingler and Smith and tried to give Palmer a year to learn the system, a solid backup who's a great person and has taking being demoted like no one i have ever seen before, and give him a nice team to start his career with, in this days, for a rookie QB it doesn;t get better than that.
If not look at the cases of some of them, Leftwich, Boller, Harrington, even the Manning and Aikman, starter right from the rookie season with not too many good results.

Cowboys confident in Kitna
NFL Notes: Tacoma man takes over at QB for struggling Dallas
McClatchy news services
Last updated: October 31st, 2010 12:24 AM (PDT)
Tony Romo’s arm is in a sling, the Dallas Cowboys’ season is on life support and their game ranks a distant second to another sporting event that takes place down the street.
This is your moment, Jon Kitna.
A quarterback the Cowboys like but hoped would never play gets his first start in more than two years this afternoon against Jacksonville. And owner Jerry Jones thinks Kitna is a viable option.
This is not Kitna’s first rodeo. The 38-year-old veteran from Tacoma understands he has not been given a clean slate. He inherits a team that is 1-5.
Kitna laughs at the suggestion the team’s fortunes over these next two months ride on his right arm.
“I don’t think that way,” he said. “I don’t think that’s true. … It’s not about one guy, regardless of how important the position is. You just have to go play the game.”
Asked how he knows that Kitna still has what it takes to win in the NFL, Jones conceded no one can know for sure until he gets out on the field.
But the club’s optimism is based on Kitna’s arm strength and familiarity with the system.
Coach Wade Phillips is convinced the Cowboys can win games with Kitna – and he’s not alone.
“Not to take anything from Romo, but he has not played in the league like Jon for 37 years (actually 14),” said receiver Roy Williams, who had his best season in Detroit when Kitna was the quarterback.
“Jon has been playing for a long time,” Williams said. “He knows it. We are not going to take a step back because he is our quarterback. I don’t want anybody to think that the Cowboys are done or whatever.
“I believe in my heart with him at the helm we will be just fine.”
