how much snow are they expecting? I heard last night it was gonna be cold but no mention on snow.
The approaching snow storm, which prompted a winter weather advisory from the National Weather Service, is expected to arrive late this afternoon or early this evening.
Areas across the region will see about 4 to 6 inches of snowfall, according to the advisory, which takes effect at 3 p.m. today and will last until 9 a.m. Sunday.
"For the most part, the snow is gone for the next couple of hours," ABC7 Meteorologist Troy Christensen said. "About 4 p.m., we'll start to see our next round move in from the west. This is going to be the more significant snow."
A winter weather advisory was issued for 3 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday.
That snow's going to hit as Jonathan Toews and the Chicago Blackhawks take on Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins. The puck drop is at 7 p.m.
"Very unique events being able to play outdoors," Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma said this week. "They're special and unique, at the same time you're playing a National Hockey League game and two points are on the line. You're playing against the defending Stanley Cup champions and a very good team in the Chicago Blackhawks.
"It will be unique getting out there, I'm looking forward to some cold weather, maybe some wind coming off the lake."
Fans are encouraged to dress in layers and bring a blanket. However, the game follows under regular Soldier Field rules- no backpacks allowed. Chicago's Office of Emergency Management said there will be "two warming centers inside the stadium for fans to warm-up during the event; those needing these centers are encouraged to look for signs in the stadium or ask security for locations."
The snow could also create other problems on the roadways, and at times snowfall rates could reach up to an inch an hour. Drivers should plan accordingly, and be prepared to slow down and give snow removal equipment room.
According to the National Weather Service, snow should taper off by Sunday morning, although some lake effect showers may linger over far northeastern Illinois.
Boone, Cook, De Kalb, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, LaSalle, Lake, Lee, McHenry, Ogle, Will and Winnebago counties are all under the winter weather advisory.
With the fresh snow, falling temps and strong winds, wind chill readings could bring the temperatures to 5 to 15 below zero by Sunday morning.
