Bought a new laptop last week and was kicking the tires. Everything requires a freaking driver that don't work and don't see how this was a step up from XP. Does anybody know how to turn off the double click on the mouse pad option? I'm constantly confirming selections when I'm not trying to. XP had an option to only use the mouse buttons for confirmation. Will I lose performance if I go back to XP and will I have to reinstall an ass load of drivers if I do that? Vista sucks!

With a laptop, your best bet is to contact the manufacturer & try to get an Xp restore cd. If you think you have driver issues now, wait until you try to load XP without all the brand specific crap. You'll be in PC hell.

That would really surprise me.

Sure, they'll phase it out in a few years just like every other operating system, but I can't imagine that they'll fast track it to the trash after what they've put in it.

There are some really nice things about it - It uses memory much better than XP ever did, but it does require much more (luckily RAM is cheap 4GB for ~$100).

Drivers really shouldn't be an issue is the laptop is new, unless it's some odd off-brand. The manufacturers website should have Vista drivers for everything you'd need.

One thing that helped me a great deal was disabling Windows Defender. It'll remove all the annoying "do you really want to run this program" type warnings. As long as you back things up, or keep important stuff on a seperate partition or HD, I'd highly suggest this as those confirmations were driving me nuts.

Can't help /w the double click stuff, sorry.

I read more on what could possible be up and what I found out is I have the 64 bit version and most programs that are compatible with Vista run off 32 bit max. I don't know how to change to 32 bit but I understand I lose speed and performace by going backwards. My question is: why in the hell wold they make a laptop or PC that is far ahead of the software makers? It forces you to buy the newest programs and even some of the are not 64 bit compatible yet? I do like the speed and performance aspect though but I will have to update everything and some programs again aren't even 64 bit compatible yet (Palm Desktop, Microsoft Office and etc.) :ohno:

You might try going to the PC manufacturer's website and find all the XP drivers if you can scrape up a copy of XP someplace and install it first. That's what I did and I'm glad for it.

Must have been a white man that invented it.

White man is not smart enough to invent anything, they steal ideas like the cotton gin, electricity and traffic light then claim it for themselves. Obama invented the internet too!

Vista is just awful

Windows 7 is supposed to be pretty good though

I still use XP pro. Some brand new laptops still come loaded with XP

Millions of former Windows Millennium users might have something to say about Vista being the worst operating system.

Microsoft can't seem to do anything right these days. That Seinfeld campaign has to be the most expensive failure in advertising history.

Windows 7 to arrive by 2009 holiday season

Expect to see Windows 7 right around this time next year.

CNET reports that during a technical session at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference in Los Angeles, Microsoft director Jim Howe gave a presentation that seemed to confirm that Windows 7 will be on PCs by next year’s holiday season. (Techmeme) This little nugget isn’t exactly a big surprise.

“Definitely the holiday focus is going to be on 7,” Howe told CNET following his presentation during a technical session about Velocity, a program designed to improve PC quality. It has been widely speculated, though never confirmed by Microsoft, that Windows 7 will ship around mid-year, in time to be on machines that ship for the 2009 holiday season.
Microsoft has avoided a public commitment on a shipping date for Windows 7, trying to avoid the PR hit that would come from missing a deadline. The official word from the company is that Windows will ship within three years of the January 2007 consumer release of Windows Vista. The company has said that it will ship a beta version early next year.

I don't understand why video editing is such an expensive sidekick when everyone and their mom has a device of some kind that records video.

This type of software should be standard with any OS these days.
