Windows 2000 problem

As I said, running Windows 2000.

Today when I turn on my desktop, it gives this message:

Checking file system on C:
The type of the file system is FAT32

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue.

so I let it continue and this happens.

Windows is verifying files and foldes...
100% complete

Windows has checked the file system and found no problem.

Then it just continues in a cycle of doing this over and over. I also tried skipping the test and it still continues on this cycle.

What gives? I just used it this morning???

Unless your machine is freezing up, crashing or you're hitting the power button to shut it down-it sounds like your hard drive is dying.

I would copy everything and anything that you want off of it as soon as you can. After you do that, run a manual scan and let it run until it completes. If you are seeing row after row of text that looks like errors that it's finding or repairs that it's trying to make, it's probably near death-and shouldn't take much longer until everything on it is inaccessible (at least without paying to have it recovered-which may or may not work).

To further clarify, it keeps just rebooting itself after the disk check. I tried starting in Safe Mode, but it hasn't worked, the same result.

How can I copy everything off of it, if I can't get the thing booted?

Ohhhhhh......I didn't realize that you are stuck in the endless loop of reboots & scandisks.

I hate to say it, but that most likely means that the drive is already crashed. Depending on how bad it is, it may be possible for a repair place to copy the data off of the drive-but there are no guarantees at that point.

If they can not, there are other-much more expensive options if you lost something critical (and I mean MORE EXPENSIVE).

Can the hard drive be setup on another system (basically setup as a second hard drive), then you would boot off of the first drive, and copy the data from the crashed drive to CD, etc...

That is quite possible if the drive is readable. Definitely worth a shot if you know how to do it.

Your data is probably fine, though you will need to move it somewhere by using another HDD or computer.
