High School Video

I think this kid may just live up to all the hype. Granted this video is against high school kids, but Florida has some of the best high school athletes in the country. This kid looks damn fast and he gets off blocks well. I am glad the U gave him a chance. He did some dumb things, but everyone says he isn't a troublesome kid. He got good grades in the classroom too.

Willie was the kid involved in the night club incident in Gainesville and fire extinguisher incident. He was highly sought after by all the big schools down here and by Auburn and a few others. He had quite a few run ins with the law for dumb things. None of the schools knew about his past, Miami included, and they offered him a scholarship. After he got into trouble up in Gainesville, it looked like he might go to jail. Miami withheld admitting him, until his legal situation was settled. The U and coach Coker decided to take a chance on him. He isn't some dumb athlete though. His grades were very good and he can play his ass off. Many comparisons to LT. It's early to make those comparisons, but he is really good.

In the first clip of that video, he broke the QB's arm I believe. In a few weeks, you'll hear plenty more about Willie Williams on the field.

Chris, I'll see what I can dig up. Phillip's would be sweet as a Cane. He is the first or second ranked DB in the country I believe.

Carol City turns out phenomenal players. Their first game is against Jackson. Should be good.

wow what a opener

Here is # 1 kid in Fla another carol City kid, Frazier HC at CC loves sending kids to Miami

1. *#^ Ricky Jean-Francois, DE, 6-3, 245, Miami (Carol City)
While everyone talks about Kenny Phillips on this year’s Carol City defense, Jean-Francois is quickly becoming a special player himself. He has big time written all over him. You can tell just by looking at some kids that they’re going to be special on the football field. Jean-Francois is one of those kids. His best days are way ahead of him. He had a choice of either sitting behind former Carol City All-State defensive ends Maurice Charles and Eric Moncur or moving inside to play tackle. So while he weighed less than 220 pounds at the time, Jean-Francois moved inside. You could immediately see a level of toughness that would be tough to match. His feet move exceptionally well and he was always fighting, doing whatever he could to find the ball. It wasn’t long before teams began double-teaming this 215-pound tackle. He was so good inside that the Carol City coaches played him more there last season. He finished the year with over 80 tackles and 10 sacks, becoming a first team All-Dade pick after the season. He’ll be at defensive end this season and I can’t wait to see what opposing tackles do when they must find a way to slow him down. He’s now 6-3 and a rock-solid 245 pounds. He is lightning quick off the ball. He has long arms and everything you look for in a young defensive end. Jean-Francois also competes in track and won two state titles this past spring, throwing the shot put 65-7 and the discus 169-6. He’ll be a heavy favorite to win it again next year as well. On the football field, wait till he is able to bulk up some more and continue learning how to play the defensive end position. Dade County has been pumping out some big time defensive ends over the last few years (Andre Wadsworth, Bryan Pata, etc) and Jean-Francois has as much upside as any of them at this age

RJF is a lock to choose the U. The only thing hurting him presently, are his grades. His GPA is low. If he gets that up, he is a Cane for sure.

Chili,

Do you really believe this:

" but everyone says he isn't a troublesome kid."

How many times has this kid been arrested? 6,7, 8? Just because he signed with U of M doesn't make him a 'misunderstood' kid...

This was an email sent to all emplyees at the University of Miami regarding the decision to admit Mr. Willie Williams.

July 27, 2004

I feel an obligation to communicate with the University community on an issue in the news.

In my experience, most higher educational institutions in this country consider institutional interests above any others in making decisions, despite protestations to the contrary that we are acting in the interests of our students, or faculty, or staff. In the case of our decision to admit Mr. Willie Williams, we probably should take a pass knowing the outcry might be damaging to our hard-earned reputation.

We choose not to in this case. Not because, as many would argue, we need his exceptional talent on the football team. Indeed, anyone who knows anything about UM football knows we have so much talent that we have the luxury of being more selective and continuing our dominance in the upper echelons of college football. We do exactly that every year; our coaches take character and the ability of a young man to successfully complete a course of study very seriously. They also know from history that it is hard to predict how well a highly-prized recruit will do or, God forbid, if an injury will destroy an athletic career. We choose to trust the experience of our coaches.

More importantly, we choose to support the recommendation of members of our faculty and staff who constituted our admissions group. They possess broad experience in reading complicated admissions applications, which in this case revealed a more accurate picture of a young man than what you have heard and read to date. Laws protecting the files of young people have resulted in inaccurate public reports--and sloppy conclusions by various so-called experts.

This is hardly a perfect applicant to the University. Oh, how we love perfection--perfect grades, perfect character, and perfect recommendations. Those are the easy ones! This young man is not perfect and has made some bad decisions--in friends, in behavior, etc. However, he is young, and his file reveals academic talent as well as the better-known athletic ability.

Mr. Williams is also one of us--a son of Miami. We have a special obligation, relationship, and commitment to the young people of our South Florida community. We want them to continue to think of us as a place of academic excellence and opportunity. My friends and advisors have suggested that some institution will take him if we don't; I believe that to be a true statement. However, our reading of his application is that he will have the possibility of a real future if he attends an institution that is both tough and demanding academically.

Therefore, as a condition of admission, we have placed the bar high for him. There will be academic conditions that he must meet to play football at Miami. Additionally, he will participate in a program that we provide for all athletes that includes mentoring, constructive counseling, and monitoring of their behavior--both on and off campus.

It may seem to you that in this case we are prepared to make a decision that, at least on the surface, seems in his interest and not ours as an institution. I believe that periodically having to make decisions like this makes us a better institution. Since it is your institution, I value your comments. Feel free to e-mail me at dshalala@miami.edu.

Sincerely,

Donna E. Shalala
President

Chris, I read Canestime almost every day. A must site for Canes fans. BTW, check your email.

Max,
I do think WW is misunderstood. No denying he made mistakes and his record is far from spotless, but everyone who has come into contact with him speaks highly of his charcter. Trust me, after the outlaw 80's and 90's the football program went through and all the work they have done rebuilding the image of the school and its football program, they in particular coach Coker aren't going to hitch their reps to some outlaw, thuggish kid.

Everyone deserves a second chance in life and I commend Miami for not turning their backs on Willie and for giving him a chance at getting an education at a top notch private university and for playing with one of the best football programs in the country. Like the school president said, Willie is one of us, a son of Miami. He isn't spotless, but he isn't a criminal who deserves to be locked up, not for the dumb crimes he committed as a misguided YOUTH.
