I realize they played in different eras. And I realize there are more teams with watered-down talent nowadays. But, with Bonds now closing in on Mays' home run total, who do you think is the better ALL-AROUND player?

Absolutely Say Hey Willie, Bonds couldn't fill one shoe of Mays in Center field! Bonds a good hitter, but so was Mays, lol! Defensively Mays by far! Remember question? Best ALL AROUND PLAYER!!

Willie was a better defensive player and played CENTERFIELD. Very hard to imagine any BETTER hitter than Barry the last 4 years. Lets put Barry in left, Willie in center, and Dewey in right and call it a night.

Bonds: The last few years he has surpassed many great ballplayers. He has surpassed Willie Mays this year. No player produces so many great things with so very few pitches to hit from. I don't think there is such thing as a dominate hitter in baseball (dominate pitcher yes, dominate batter no). Barry comes as close as any since maybe Ted Williams. Barry makes every other hitter in the lineup much better. The numbers are comparable to some degree and many say Willie was a far much better defensive player, but no one can deny Barry changes the game more so than any since Ted Williams.

All around you might ask...well look at what Barry has done on the Basepaths..and the numerous gold gloves and good fielding percentages out of left field.

Apples and oranges, boys. Barry Bonds would look like a clown if you put him in center. Not to mention he would never get the ball back to the infield on a deep fly ball.

Catch a replay of Mays' play in the World Series at Yankee stadium and you won't have to ponder this question anymore.

Mays is a better all around player. But for the last 3 years, Barry might be the best HR hitter ever. This guy has 44 HR's in 373 official AB's and only 54 K's. Compared to AROD's 47 HR's in about 590 official AB's.

Mays is the better outfielder but Bonds is the better hitter. I can't imagine people pitching around Mays practically every AB like they do to Bonds.

Bonds gets one to max 5 pitches hit a game...for the passed 3 years...this is the way the game is played now...the hitters strike all the fear ..in the 50's 60's 70's it was always the pitcher striking fear (well accept for randy johnson)

Willie Mays - HANDS DOWN

Bonds is a great player BUT he has benefited greatly as all new players have since the 70's, as the Science of Baseball has learned allot from the old timers and most importantly since the 70's the advancements in training with BODY MECHANICS has greatly benefited players in how they train and develop their batting and fielding skills.

The question should be:

If Barry Bonds was back in the 60's...would he be a better all around player than Mays?

Answer: NO. Mays is the better player by a LONG SHOT. Hands down.
