Shoemaker was one of the greatest Jockeys to ever ride into victory.
This guys is a classic that we will probably never see the likes of again.
He held the record for 8,833 victories that wasn't broken until years AFTER he rode into retirement. And who knows? Maybe if he wasn't crippled in that car accident he may have come out of retirement a few times to show the new kids HOW it was done.
Shoemaker did some classy things. What about the time he was at some formal dinner and partied until 4am and then went to the track with his buddies and was warming up his horse and riding him around the track wearing a full Tuxedo. What a site! He then went on and rode that same horse to win that afternoon. What a feeling that must of been for him.
I made a lot of money betting on the ol' Shoe as so did others. But it was the Shoe and the class he had that made these races more exciting when ever he was riding in them. And he never used his whip.
God was kind to the Shoe and let him pass away in his sleep while he was probably dreaming of riding again past the finish line........Shoe wins it by 7 lengths into the gates of heaven...
RIP Mr. Shoemaker
