Have we lost the ability to be outraged by the declaration that large contributors -- whether they are individuals, corporations or labor unions, giving to Republicans or Democrats -- are financing good government and that this is just the cost of doing business? Have the hold of large contributors over our politics and the fund-raising tactics of both parties become this strong and this accepted?
A true test of a good government is not whether it charges taxpayers for inaugural parties. It is whether it gives a fair hearing to all citizens and their concerns and interests, rather than letting some buy greater access to officials and their help than others can. Isn't that the kind of government we would like to be celebrating on Inauguration Day?
