Warner Bros Won’t Report Box Office For ‘Dark Knight Rises’ All Weekend

BREAKING… UPDATE: Warner Bros Pictures just issued this statement confirming what I reported first:
“Out of respect for the victims and their families, Warner Bros. Pictures will not be reporting box office numbers for The Dark Knight Rises throughout the weekend. Box office numbers will be released on Monday.”

EXCLUSIVE 3:15 PM: I’ve just been told by a Warner Bros spokeswoman that the studio may do this “out of sensitivity to people”. Through midday today the studio was reporting The Dark Knight Rises grosses internationally and domestically as usual. Now it may suspend its box office reporting all weekend for Christopher Nolan’s final Batman trilogy installment. A final decision has not yet been made. It would be a highly unusual step for a company in the movie business that’s part of publicly owned Time Warner. And it is certainly the studio’s right to stay mute the rest of the weekend. However, the numbers will still get out because Rentrak reports grosses all through the weekend. So reporters like me will know how The Dark Knight Rises is doing.

really???

I haven't seen yet but ...wow thought at least u would like it

no offense

No one is more disappointed than I am. I've been anticipating this movie since I walked out of the theater after watching The Dark Knight.

I might have been too hasty in saying I didn't like it. Really, I'm not sure what I think. I know you have to suspend disbelief, but so many things happened that were just dumb. Also, there were long stretches with nothing much going on. And to top it off, I had a hard time understanding Bane's dialog. I know after watching the first two movies, I went back to see them again within a few days. I have no plans to watch this one again.

A few minor positives was seeing the trailer for The Hobbit which looked great, and seeing Littlefinger from A Game of Thrones have a small role at the beginning of the movie.

'Dark Knight' raises $75 mil or more Friday

By Stuart Oldham

'The Dark Knight Rises' is poised for $75 million to $80 million Friday, according to early box office estimates.

After a tragic start to its domestic run, Warner Bros.' "The Dark Knight Rises" is still poised for boffo biz at the domestic box office, with early estimates putting the Batman sequel at $75 million to 80 million for Friday alone. After grossing a 2D-record $30.6 million in midnight runs Thursday, "TDKR" is currently on track to earn north of $170 million, well short of "The Avengers'" all-time record $204 mil debut -- but Marvel/Disney had the advantage of premium 3D prices, so these estimates suggest a neck-and-neck haul in terms of ticket sales.
Still, it's difficult to predict where the "The Dark Knight" will land come Monday; estimates for Friday returns fell roughly 5% from midday to early evening.
"I expect a lot of variability throughout the weekend," one rival studio exec says.
Warner Bros. announced on Friday that it would not report box office figures for "The Dark Knight Rises" over the weekend out of respect for the victims of the shooting in Aurora, Colo., which left 12 people dead after a lone gunman opened fire on the packed theater at a Thursday midnight screening. It was the second Batpic in a row to open under tragic circumstances; Heath Ledger's death in January 2008 came before his Oscar-winning turn as The Joker in that year's July release, "The Dark Knight."

On Sunday, Warner Bros., rival studios and box office data firm Rentrak held fast to their decision to withhold early numbers and their estimates for the weekend. In a Friday release, the studio said it delay the report "out of respect for the victims and their families."
At 9:01 a.m. PT Sunday morning, Rentrak Theatrical sent out its box office data spreadsheet titled Weekend Estimates as usual -- but it was blank. The blackout means that there was no official data on any film, from art-house indie to blockbuster.
Based on Friday's grosses, pre-sale figures and anecdotal reports, analysts see the film taking in between $150 million and $170 million for the three days.

IT'S OFFICIAL: 'The Dark Knight Rises' Nabs The Highest-Grossing 2D Opening Weekend Ever

Worldwide box office numbers are finally out, and as expected, "The Dark Knight Rises" reigned at theaters, gaining notoriety for making box-office history by earning $160.8 million opening weekend; however, the Caped Crusader fell short of his $195 million estimated mark. Warner Bros. made the decision Friday to hold its box-office earnings until Monday. Hours later, the rest of the studios followed suit. So, what many expected to be one of the biggest box-office weekends to date for inarguably the summer's most anticipated film, closed with a solemn end.
And, while slightly higher, early estimates for the film buzzed over the weekend, we decided to wait until the official numbers came out as the studios intended.
Though, not as strong as intended–Deadline reported the film earning as high as $195 million opening weekend–"The Dark Knight Rises" came out on top earning $160.8 million. This number gives TDKR the title of the biggest 2D opening in box-office history and the third-highest opening weekend to date behind "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" and "The Avengers."
We consider this number slightly low provided predecessor "The Dark Knight" earned $158.4m its opening weekend four years ago when the price of tickets was far lower.
This opening suggests people stayed home not because word of mouth spread the film wasn't great, but, rather, because of the sobering effects of Friday morning's shooting.

As TV ads for "The Dark Knight Rises" are pulled, this billboard for the film gets taken down as well.

We went to a midnight showing ourselves, before seeing the film a second time in IMAX Sunday morning, and we must say it was difficult for the film to not be shrouded by the events of Friday morning. We felt the urge to watch the path of any one person getting up to leave his or her seat–something one should never have to do at theaters. Call it paranoia, surely, we knew there was nothing to worry over; however, it was difficult to not have the thought in our minds this weekend, especially with three other arrests in separate TDKR incidents.
Though Friday morning's events in Colorado may have deterred some of the potential audience, it's unknown what this will do for Warner Bros. summer blockbuster down the road. The studio has already pulled TV ads, and began painting over a billboard ad that hung outside our window (normally these billboards sit on display for about a month. This one has been up since the beginning of the month). If fans have pitted this as the must-see film of the summer, we expect it to drop less in percentage the second week than "The Dark Knight."
TDK dropped 29.1-percent in ticket sales it's second day in theaters. In comparison, "Rises" dipped significantly farther with 40.7-percent in ticket sales day two. Provided, TDKR also earned more opening day and night than TDK ($75.7m as opposed to $67m), so a significant drop in day two was expected. However, the day to day earnings should have seen the film carrying more steadily above its predecessor.
Worldwide, TDKR did better than TDK in three days. "Rises" earned $88m overseas, putting the overall gross for the film at an estimated $248.8m.
Here's a breakdown of "The Dark Knight Rises" vs "The Dark Knight" gross for each film's respective opening weekend:
"The Dark Knight Rises" (2012) "The Dark Knight" (2008)
Friday: $75.7m $67.1m
Saturday: $44.9m $47.6m
Sunday: $40.2m $43.5m
Domestic earnings: $160.8m $158.4m
Worldwide earnings: $248.8m $199.7m ($41.3m foreign)
Domestic theater count: 4,404 (330 IMAX) 4,366

'Dark Knight Rises' officially debuts with $249 million worldwide

Ben Fritz July 23, 2012, 2:38 p.m.

After remaining silent all weekend following Friday's massacre in Aurora, Colo., Warner Bros. confirmed Monday that"The Dark Knight Rises"debuted with $249 million in worldwide ticket sales.
The high-profile movie took in $160.9 million in the U.S. and Canada and $88 million overseas.
That marks the third-highest domestic opening of all time, not accounting for inflation. However, the domestic sum is only slightly higher than the $158-million opening of its Batman predecessor, 2008's "The Dark Knight," despite four years of rising ticket prices. Fewer fans turned out to see the new film on its first weekend.

People who saw pre-release research before the shootings had predicted the film would open with between $180 million and $200 million. It's impossible to know whether the shooting in a Colorado movie theater played a role in "The Dark Knight Rises" falling short of those expecations, but the film still had a strong debut that probably will make it very profitable for Warner Bros.
For the first time in many years, Warner and other major studios did not release box office estimates Sunday out of concern about appearing insensitive to the news that 12 people had been killed and 58 wounded early Friday at a post-midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" outside Denver.
Although Warner Bros. released the film's weekend grosses Monday, the studio declined to further discuss the figures.

The final installment in Christoper Nolan's Batman trilogy also had a very robust start overseas in just 17 markets. The movie had its biggest debut in the United Kingdom, followed by South Korea, Australia and Spain.
Next weekend, the movie will launch in an additional 40 foreign countries, including all of Latin America, and probably will have a much bigger international take than it did last weekend. However, Warner Bros.' cancellation of premieres in Paris, Tokyo and Mexico City, along with much of the associated publicity, could have an effect.
After receiving a grade of A on average from opening-night moviegoers, "The Dark Knight Rises" is poised for continued success in the U.S. and Canada. That said, the unprecedented nature of Friday's violent tragedy could affect some moviegoers' willingness to head to the multiplex.
